How Nathan’s Site Was Chosen for a School in Bay Ridge and Safety Wasn’t Considered – IS 322

In January, journalist, Katie Horan’s from The City Publication told NYC how the Nathan’s site at 650 – 86th Street was chosen for a middle school location in Bay Ridge. You can read it here.
Today, Katie Horan published a follow up of the story of how Efthimios Zisimopoulos sold the Nathan’s property for $25 million to the School Construction Authority. (See here)
If you live in the area of this school and questioned why someone chose a busy street to put a school, you will be surprised to read what went down. Read the article here
Another school is coming to Bay Ridge on 5th Avenue (even though a Community Board 10 member revealed that the nearby school had empty seats). (See here) Efthimios Zisimopoulos (Tim Ziss) was also the owner of this building and he sold this property for $21 million. (Source)
It’s four months later and not one politician spoke about this, no reporter in our area reported about it and no one investigated it.
When you vote in August and November, remember who was silent and who allowed a location for a school to be chosen this way.

Everyone is glad to see a NYC Hardware open at 7403 – 5th Avenue.
Local hardware stores are the best because the staff is helpful and they always have what you need.
Already Rigites are singing the praises of this new store and the two helpful men working there.
Congratulations to the new owner, Frank of Star Plumbing!
This used to be the location of a nail salon. (See here)

May 24, 202294th Street Beer Store Expansion Opened

On the corner of 3rd Avenue and 94th Street is a store that looks like a bodega, but it is actually a specialty beer store.
This storefront expanded and recently opened the expansion. There are two entrances to this popular store where people purchase a variety of beer (including craft beers) and scratch off lottery tickets.
The expansion was formerly C&S Jewelers – Richie’s shop.

May 24, 2022Gounardes Quoted the Wrong Statistics – The Head of the MTA Says Crime Is Up In The Subway

The MTA addressed passenger safety today because Daniel Enriquez was murdered on the Q train yesterday.

Janno Lieber, the head of the MTA seemed to understand. Lieber said, “People can’t resume normal life if just getting around is frightening.”

Jason Wilcox, the MTA Transit Chief said that there were 743 major felony crimes in the subways from January through April this year.

Wilcox shared that this is a 64% increase from the prior year due to more robberies, assaults and grand larcenies.

Why didn’t Senator Gounardes provide that information?
Gounardes strangely tweeted about “shootings being down” when everyone can see and FEEL that crime is up in the subway!

When shootings were up last year, why wasn’t Andrew Gounardes able to talk about it and address the issue with the former mayor?

The MTA said that 54% of subway crime is on trains. 40% of that crime happens late at night and overnight.
Jason Wilcox said that they will have the Train Patrol Force – dedicated teams of police on the trains during the late hours. Mayor Adams said that police will now go after fare evaders and other crimes.
Wilcox seemed honest and determined to deal with the problems in the MTA. It’s good to see the MTA will be stepping up patrols now that Summer months are here.

May 23, 2022Sunset Park Safety Patrol’s Windows Broken

The windows were broken on the Brooklyn Asian Safety Patrol vehicles on 57th Street off 7th Avenue in Sunset Park.
So this happened today. Brooklyn Asian Safety Patrol, an organization working to protect Asians in Sunset Park and Brooklyn had their vehicle window’s broken today. Are our electeds OK with that? @Sen_Gounardes @NYCMayor @GovKathyHochul #StopAsianHate pic.twitter.com/lwlkNxraWv
— Heidi Chan-Sarantopoulos ????? (@heidi4brooklyn) May 24, 2022
This patrol works to keep Asians safe in Sunset Park, like the Shomrin does in Borough Park (More info about the safety patrol here)

It’s sad how much hate exists for someone to break windows on a safety patrol for Sunset Park.

May 23, 2022Brad Lander Can’t Change the Property Tax Rate. Gounardes Had the Rate from the Property Tax Commission Since December 2021

Tonight, Brad Lander was on NY 1 acting like he was going to do something about property taxes. Lander said during the election last year that he was for a fair property tax system, but didn’t do anything. He didn’t organize any rallies or make a website, like he did against Amazon. It’s just talking on NY 1, again.
Lander would have publicly asked Brooklyn senators to work on this. The state is responsible for changing the property tax rate.
Senator Andrew Gounardes told us two years ago that he was waiting for the Property Tax Commission and former Mayor de Blasio to give the new rate, so he could adjust property taxes. Gounardes had the rate since December 2021.
At the start of this year, Gounardes said that Albany was going to handle property tax reform. Gounardes failed to do anything about property taxes because his friend, Brad Lander in Park Slope enjoys the low taxes.

Politicians like Lander and Gouanardes are the reason people stop voting. The government is for politicians and their friends – not for fair taxes or middle class people.
#PlayingPolitics and fooling no one.

May 23, 2022Gounardes & Brannan Want Bay Ridge to Clean Outside Their Office

Last week, Senator Andrew Gounardes asked Bay Ridge residents to clean outside his office. (See here)
I thought Gounardes had people meeting outside of his office to carry tools to the location they were cleaning. But they took photos outside of the office cleaning. (See photo).
There are some real dirty streets in Bay Ridge, why would he start with his office? Strangely, Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge has a BID and we have been told that the BID has a regular cleaner.
This Wednesday, Councilman Brannan wants residents to clean outside of his office at 8203 – 3rd Avenue.
Maybe they will take the tools and cleanup somewhere else, but it doesn’t look that way:

A schedule of places to clean for upcoming weeks was published, but most of these places are cleaned by the Parks Department.
Why isn’t Gounardes taking a ride around the neighborhood and locating the dirty places in the neighborhood OR asking residents what needs to be cleaned?
