Gounardes Quoted the Wrong Statistics – The Head of the MTA Says Crime Is Up In The Subway

The MTA addressed passenger safety today because Daniel Enriquez was murdered on the Q train yesterday.

Janno Lieber, the head of the MTA seemed to understand. Lieber said, “People can’t resume normal life if just getting around is frightening.”

Jason Wilcox, the MTA Transit Chief said that there were 743 major felony crimes in the subways from January through April this year.

Wilcox shared that this is a 64% increase from the prior year due to more robberies, assaults and grand larcenies.

Why didn’t Senator Gounardes provide that information?
Gounardes strangely tweeted about “shootings being down” when everyone can see and FEEL that crime is up in the subway!

When shootings were up last year, why wasn’t Andrew Gounardes able to talk about it and address the issue with the former mayor?

The MTA said that 54% of subway crime is on trains. 40% of that crime happens late at night and overnight.
Jason Wilcox said that they will have the Train Patrol Force – dedicated teams of police on the trains during the late hours. Mayor Adams said that police will now go after fare evaders and other crimes.
Wilcox seemed honest and determined to deal with the problems in the MTA. It’s good to see the MTA will be stepping up patrols now that Summer months are here.
