Avid Hotel Is Being Put Up Fast – Bay Ridge
Avid Hotel is being putting up rapidly at 640 -86th Street.
This lot had the old gas station was (see here)
Across the street from this hotel is the new middle school, IS 322 at the 25 million location, formerly Nathan’s. (Info)
The school won’t be opening until the Fall – 2024. It was sold in January 2019. (Info)

Redistricting Brooklyn. Parents Spent Sunday Fighting To Keep Communities Together
Like NYS, every ten years NYC is redistricted due to population. Below are the proposed NYC Council Districts:
In the early part of the Summer, the original map showed Bay Ridge in a district with Staten Island.
The Bay Ridge Democrats wrote to the redistricting committee and the map was changed. Bay Ridge was then put in Sunset Park’s – District 38. (Strangely, journalist, Jaime DeJesus didn’t mention that in his article.) This new map is trying to take representation away from Sunset Park.
We know redistricting will benefit politicians – not people.
We saw our senate district severely gerrymandered. Senator Andrew Gounardes was silent about his vote for a district favoring him – not Brooklyn.
Striping the waterfront from several neighborhoods for a Gounardes district was a sneaky move, as it removed power from poor neighborhoods like, Sunset Park. (See District 26 on Map) We also saw donations from millionaires to Gounardes. (Info)
This afternoon, Brooklynites showed up to Medger Evers College to speak out about their their communities. Parents were there to fight for good schools, their small businesses and safety in their community.
Asian voters don’t want to be pushed into District 38 with Aviles or with Brannan – they want their own leadership for District 43.
They brought a sign that said, “Asian Community Cohesion Matters – Brooklyn Asian Support the New D43.” Parent leader, Yiatin Chu gave testimony and told me that she supported the new D43 (that means it is good – she doesn’t settle).
Erik Frankel, whose running for NYC Council to represent Sunset Park, listened to the parents. He doesn’t want to continue to see Sunset Park losing and being taken of advantage of. Frankel supports the parents in the Asian Wave Alliance fighting against the status quo.
Parents asked that Bensonhurst be kept together. (See letter here)
Politicians were there to fight for their jobs.
Even Justin Brannan showed up to Medger Evers to speak. (See photo above) Parents didn’t enjoy Brannan’s pizza cut into slices analogy. They were there for answers and action – not political yadda yadda. Parents know the 8 to 1 matching funds and these new districts are going to cause a lot of drama in Brooklyn. I wonder why Brannan didn’t mention it on social media?
Strangely, former NYC Schools Commission, Dennis Walcott is in charge of the redistricting.

Clothing and Supplies Drive in Bay Ridge for the Families From Texas
Good Shepherd Church at 7420 – 4th Avenue in Bay Ridge is always doing the right thing to help people.
They are collecting new clothing, towels, cell phone cards and toiletries every day 9:00 am – 7:00 pm until September 10th.

Sexual Assault in Bay Ridge This Week
On Tuesday night, after the concert at Shore Road Park in Bay Ridge, a mother was sexually assaulted while walking home with her child in a stroller. How awful!
The woman contacted 911 and let others know because she doesn’t want other women hurt. She urged women to contact 911 right away, if they were sexually assaulted.
We feel terrible that this woman had to go through this.
The police are investigating this situation, but the perpetrator has not been caught.
By now, the 68th Precinct should have issued a warning, so that people can take precautions at night and when walking home alone. * No information about the woman or the assault needs to be shared, so her privacy can be maintained. * Each precinct has an officer who is supposed to communicate with the community.
When the 68th Precinct didn’t make a statement, we should have seen elected officials put out a warning to people.
Silence will not prevent the next assault – talk to your family and friends about safety this week.
Carrying pepper spray is a good start – it is legal in NYC. Rite Aid sells this one for $9.99:
Most local drugstores sell pepper spray – it’s behind the register in some stores.

The Green Fence on 69th Street & 3rd Avenue
People saw the green fence on corner of 3rd Avenue and 69th Street in Bay Ridge and got very nostalgic.
They hoped that their beloved Circles Restaurant was returning.
It doesn’t look likely as Gold Coast was the last restaurant at this location. Circles had moved moved to where Peace by Piece Thrift Store is now. Besides, the NYC Department of buildings shows this building is owned by Tim Ziss.
Let’s see what renovations will do to this old building that has been vacant for years!

Beets and Carrots – Rave Review From Vinny
Vinny went to Peas and Carrots Restaurant on 3rd Avenue and 99th Street in Bay Ridge.
It is a farm to table restaurant and everyone comments how fresh their food tastes. This is corn pizza.

Patch is Missing – Fort Hamilton Pkwy and 91st – 92nd Streets
“Patch” is a calico cat that lives indoors and outdoors.
She was mistaken for a stray about 2 weeks ago and then her owner was found.
Patch sleeps inside at night. She is on a special diet & needs meds.
She was shaven by the vet, so she looks skinnier & small.
Her owner is very worried about her. Last seen at Ft. Hamilton Pkwy, between 90 & 92 streets. Call/txt 917-609-1218

RIP Qiu Rifeng – Scooter Accident in Bensonhurst
Today around 1:00 pm, a 22-year-old man rode his Hover-1 Journey folding scooter down on the sidewalk of 74th Street. (Info)

The man attempted to cross 18th Avenue. He collided with a 2022 Kia Sedan and flew off the scooter due to the impact. He hit the car windshield and shattered the glass before hitting the ground. HOW AWFUL! (Info) He was only two blocks away from his home.
The driver of the Kia remained at the scene. He is a 23-year-old man who was driving on 18th Avenue.
The 18th Avenue Feast can be seen in the photos of this accident.
RIP Qiu Rifeng. Prayers for Qiu Rifeng’s family and friends.
