November 2, 2022Loophole in The Salary Transparency Bill And Lobbyists Too

Council members Natasha Williams and Justin Brannan’s salary transparency bill went into effect today for businesses with four or more employees (including the owner). See the bill here

New York City employers must post the minimum and maximum salary amounts that they will pay when they list a job.
The new law prohibits job listings from being vague with: $18 per hour and up. Also vague would be: A maximum salary of $40,000 per year.
The new law doesn’t prevent listings from posting ranges like: $50,000 – $100,000
Current job posting:

Or this:

These are large salary ranges, which just wastes people’s time.
Basically this salary is the difference between a starting salary and someone with experience.
Private companies don’t want to post the high end of what they are willing to pay for a more qualified candidate, especially if they are able to hire the candidate at a lower salary.
Why didn’t Chris McCreight or other members on NYC Council predict how this would work and fix the bill before the Council voted on it last Spring?
Justin Brannan likes “good faith” bills. But this isn’t Kansas – this is NYC and the law should be clear to everyone. The lack of clarity diluted the effectiveness of the bill. The bill should have defined Good faith with a percentage.
Temporary help firms are exempt from posting salaries.
Employers who post a listing without the salary or are vague have 30 days to fix it or they can be fined. They can be finded up to $250,000 in civil penalties. (Source)
The NYC Commission on Human Rights is supposed to enforce this. (See here) To report an incident of discrimination call: 212-416-0197 or report it here.
Let’s not forget the lobbyist who made some Councilmembers dance:

Brannan appeared on this Introduction 134 listing in the lobbyist database (find it here)

Why is there always a lobbyist? Someone ask Chris McCreight!

The story made it to Newsweek! (See here)

When Abbate was asked about it, Abbate said that Zeldin is breaking the law before he takes office. (BEFORE HE TAKES OFFICE – LOL)
We’ve seen Brooklyn Republicans take down Frontus’ signs and we have seen Democrats take down Fox’s signs. Any politician removing another politician’s signs is going low because they are scared!

Councilwoman Inna Vernikov came to the rescue of a home owner, who felt targeted for a ticket from the Department of Sanitation.
Vernikov was able to get the tickets voided for the constituent so that’s good.

Let’s hope someone was just having a bad day and this is not the norm.

November 1, 2022Shore Hill Expansion Meeting in Bay Ridge 11/17

Six months ago, the developer for Shore Hill made a presentation to Community Board 10. The developer wants to build a new 90 foot building, which will add 137 units to Shore Hill. In order to do this, they will reduce parking on the property.
While more affordable senior housing in our area is needed, the developer should modify some of the plans. (Info here)
Many Bay Ridge home owners in that area were upset, as the new development is 90 feet high and will affect those in the area.
If you are on Community Board 10, vote for the residents. I don’t care if your role is advisory – no one is standing with people who have invested in this community. We’ve watched to many developers win in our area.
There is a CB 10 Meeting on November 17th at 7:00 at Shore Hill.
. At a previous Community Board meeting our neighbors posed questions about the project’s impact on the community, such as: water table disruption (i.e. flooding basements of surrounding homes), impact damage (vibration / concussion damage to nearby homes), vermin, sewage and drainage overload, noise and dirt, loss of parking, and more. The developer was supposed to return with responses to these questions, and we hope to hear about them in this meeting. Please attend (live or on-line) to make sure your voice is heard! Also, please let your Councilperson and State Senator know your position on this matter. Contact CB 10 with any further questions [email protected]

November 1, 2022Brannan Goes After Fox Over News
The Daily News printed a story about Brian Fox from 12 years ago.
It’s strange for Justin Brannan to do because Brannan knows Andrew Gounardes co-sponsored a bill to give people a clean slate for a misdemeanor after three years and a clean slate for a felony after seven years. The reason for the bill was so people could get jobs and housing. (See the bill)

Justin Brannan, who was almost taken out by Fox in the last election raced to Twitter to post this:
