New Deli Is Opening Where “Spa” Used to Be
A new deli is opening on 3rd Avenue and 74th Street.
They sell tortas (sandwiches on a crusty roll). There was too much traffic, so we couldn’t stop for a pic.
The storefront was previously a “spa” and got shut down by the sheriff’s office. (See here) Before it was being used like this, it used to be a deli: Iced Box Deli.

December 8, 2022Than Than Htwe, An Asian Mother From Bensonhurst Was Killed – Justice Not Served

Than Than Htwe, a 58-year-old Brooklyn mother lived in Bensonhurst with her husband and son. (NYT Article)

On Saturday, July 17, 2021, Than Than Htwe took the train to Manhattan to go to a doctor’s appointment. She was accompanied by her son.

As the two walked out of the Canal Street station, at 10:45 am, 52-year-old David Robinson attempted to steal Mrs. Htwe’s son’s backpack. Robinson pulled down on the bag and both Than Than and her son fell down the stairs.
“Robinson told police he heard Than Than Htwe’s head crack.” (Source)
Than Than was brought to the hospital and operated on. She was in a coma and died eleven days later.
David Robinson was arrested and charged with manslaughter in September 2021. His bail was set at $100,000 in cash or a $75,000 insurance company bond or a $75,000 bond-surety-partially secured.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s allowed Robinson to plead guilty to second-degree manslaughter with a sentence recommendation of one to three years.”
Robinson has been in jail since September 2021, so he has served 14 months and can technically be released.” (Source)

People Magazine and The New York Times (See here) covered the story.
This story never appeared in a Brooklyn newspaper because it happened in Manhattan. No politician in Brooklyn spoke out for Than Than Htwe or her family.
Than Than Htwe’s son must run that scene through his head over and over. Now he had to hear that the man who took his mother’s life only needs to be in jail for 1-3 years. #NoJustice

December 8, 2022Max Was Found and Is Back Home

Max, the golden doodle had been missing from his Brooklyn home for 10 days.
A Good Samaritan texted a picture of Max inside a Brooklyn Deli. (I saw who did it – good eye!!)
The owner went to the deli and the woman at the deli said the dog was hers. The owner left the deli and then went back in. As she was speaking to the woman, she saw Max. She called his name and Max ran to his mother!

Merry Christmas to Max and his family!

December 8, 2022City Council Hearing – Anti Asian Rhetoric That No One Stopped or Spoke Out About

It’s sad to see that this rhetoric was allowed in NYC Council. This was said at the meeting for Intro 632 (to remove the right for NYC owners/landlords to do background checks)
Here it is: pic.twitter.com/CwPPipvFsF
— Reza Chowdhury (@RezaC1) December 8, 2022
Keith Powers said he was not present in the room.

I’m surprised that NYC Council representative in charge didn’t stop and speak out against this anti-Asian rhetoric.
How do Asians in NYC feel when they see officials in NYC allowed people to speak like this?

December 7, 2022Crime in Bay Ridge Last Week

It’s been a better week.
The rates are still high (17.7% more crime this year than last year in the 68th Precinct — you can see that in the last column across from the word Total), but this week the numbers are little lower.
That’s a good sign.
