Why Justin Brannan Would Be the Worst Thing For Coney Island….
It would be terrible for Coney Island to have Justin Brannan as a leader.
Why? The head of the EDC, the Brooklyn Borough President, Antonio Reynoso and Justin Brannan have all been lobbied by Thor Properties concerning the Coney Island Casino.
None of these people mentioned they were lobbied by Thor about the casino.
Coney Island has been building up their community for years.
Putting a casino in Coney Island won’t help the people in Coneey Island, who are invested in their community.
It will hurt some of the people who will lose their money gambling.

Housing Town Hall in Bay Ridge – Sunday 3/12
On Sunday, March 12th at 2:00 pm, there will be a Housing Town Hall at Good Shepherd Church 7420 4th Avenue.
They wrote: “You’ll have the opportunity to learn about how to fight injustices by your landlord and/or housing court, as well as how to apply to the NYC Housing Lottery! We’ll be joined by our constituent services specialists and housing attorneys to answer your questions.”
Strangely, this Housing Town Hall on Bay Ridge is being run by Marcela Mitaynes, the socialist Assembly representative of Sunset Park.
Neither Senator Gounardes or Councilman Brannan has ever held a Housing Town Hall for the community.

Mitaynes is busy this weekend. She is doing this workshop about unemployement in Albany today – see here.

Irish Stores in Bay Ridge
There used to be several Irish stores in Bay Ridge or nearby in Brooklyn, but time changes everything!
1) Keyfood on 75th and 3rd has an Irish section and Barry’s Tea
2) Superfresh on 69th Street between 3rd Avenue and Ridge Blvd. 3rd and Ridge has an Irish section and Barry’s Tea
3) Hom has teas – 3rd Avenue and 87th Street
Queens
Butcher Block in Sunnyside Queens has a lot of Irish food.

Santander Bank on 5th Avenue is Closing
Santander’s Bank at 7500 5th Avenue is closing in April 13th.
Peter shared a picture that Santander Bank is closing on April 13th at 4:00 pm. The nearest Santander is on 4th Avenue and between 95th and 96th Streets.

Fancy Dresses and Prom Dress Donations Are Needed For Ft. Hamilton High School Teens
Bay Ridge ladies, if you have fancy dresses or prom dresses hanging in your closet (or your daughter’s) that aren’t being used, Fort Hamilton High School is collecting dresses to help their students get to prom (and look good at graduation).
They also need small bags, costume jewelry and shoes for the students.

RIP Seamus Labradoodle (Paws Truly)
Sad News……Seamus Labradoodle died earlier this month. See the message from his owners here.
If you were lucky enough to meet Seamus at Paws Truly on 3rd Avenue, you knew you met a very special dog. For many years, he would be at the store when we stopped in.
Seamus was the mascot for the Bay Ridge St. Paddy’s Day Parade. Everyone clapped and cheered when Seamus and his owner would ride in the car during the Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day parade.

They Are Trying to Rezone This Corner with a Nine Story Building and 100 Dwellings -Whoever is Voting For this Rezoning is Heartless!
There’s a huge rezoning for New Utrecht Avenue and 71st Street – where the old bank was located.
The planned building is supposed to be nine stories and have 100 units. This is the old Capital One Bank site on 72nd and New Utrecht Avenue.
There is a public hearing on Thursday, March 9th at 7:00 pm at Il Centro at 8711 – 18th Avenue. (Why is this community meeting being held at a private club?)
Yes, it’s an old picture above with the January 2023 date.
Who represents this area and what have they said about it? Let’s see whose standing up for Brooklyn?
Councilman Brannan represents this area, but because of the recent City Council rezoning, this will not be part of the district.
These jagged district lines put this address into Alexa Aviles – District 38. That’s so strange, but a sign of gerrymandering!
Twenty-seven weeks ago – when this was Brannan’s district, Brannan wrote on social media that this was going to be rental apartments with retail shopping on the ground floor.
Why didn’t Justin Brannan tell the residents that it was going to be a nine story building with 100 units? C’MON.
This is why I do not like Councilman Brannan. Brannan is not forthcoming with information when people ask for information.
Why the Brooklyn Paper or the Home Reporter report about this rezoning, so people know what is going on?
In the Fall, neighbors of the building noted that school desks were moved into the building and that it was an all girl’s private/religious school.
The work filed for the building also said it was going to be a school (from September – see here)
The neighbors of this building had a quiet bank that closed early and was quiet on the weekends. The bank has been closed for a long time too. Now they are going to have at least 100 new neighbors – that’s not right! This building needs to be downsized.
There’s no mention of the of Community Board 11’s Meeting and this huge project on Aviles’ social media page – not Senator Iwen Chu’s or Assemblyman Chan’s social media.
Why aren’t these politicians speaking up for the home owners and residents in the area? Do they even know there is a meeting on 3/9/23?
This is what I mean about leadership – there is no one leading for the residents and home owners here.
