Councilwoman Vernikov Had Two Abandoned Boats Removed from Sheepshead Bay’s Waters

Councilwoman Inna Vernikov was very excited to have some old boats removed from the water in Sheepshead Bay!
Vernikov shared that she put aside $55,000 for this environmental project.

Watch the video below:
And they say Republicans don’t care about the environment??These were abandoned in our waterways for years. We funded removal via Greener Initiative & teamed up w/@NYCParks! Not only were they an eyesore, but dangerous for boaters & posed ecological threats to under ? habitats! pic.twitter.com/2MhyH1CRZB

February 26, 2023Whose in the Pictures on the Back of Skinflints Brunch Menu?

The back of Skinflint’s brunch menu has a picture that was taken outside of the restaurant – around 1969.
Nancy K. shared that she is the 10-year-old girl with her family in the photo!

Skinflints Restaurant is on 5th Avenue and 79th Street. They are best known for the French onion soup and cheeseburgers (which are served on English muffins, rather than buns).
BTW, Skinflints St. Paddy’s Day decorations are fantastic too.

February 24, 2023As NYC Cuts Money to Education – 3K & CUNY, Another Ferry for Bay Ridge is Being Subsidized

Jada Camille, journalist at the Brooklyn Paper wrote about a new ferry from Bay Ridge to Wall Street. There already is an existing ferry that stops at Bay Ridge (see here), but this new line will go from Bay Ridge to Wall Street in 20 minutes.

Coney Island doesn’t have ANY ferry service. It takes 1.5 hours to get from Coney Island to Manhattan, but Bay Ridge is getting a second ferry.
While that sounds good to many Ridgites, Jada Camille failed to mention what this will cost NYC and how NYC taxpayers will be footing the bill for a few spoiled NY’ers.

Currently, ferry rides in NYC are $4.00 each way. Of course four dollars doesn’t cover the cost of a ferry ride.

In July, The Post revealed that each ferry ride cost $17.32 ($14.57 was being subsidized by NYC for each $2.75 ferry ticket.) (Source) It was also revealed that the true cost per ticket was under reported.

Who could forget Brad Lander’s pursed lips as he outed the EDC for paying $2.8 million more than the fair market value for a ferry? (Here) That’s insane!

I was surprised to see Councilman Brannan pushing for a second ferry for Bay Ridge, when he knows NYC isn’t in a position to subsidize another boat.

Last year, Brannan didn’t do anything when $370 Million was cut from NYC schools. (See here) Brannan was the head of Finance for NYC Council and the court pointed out that proper procedures for the budget were not followed. (Source)
‘

Many Bay Ridge residents aren’t going to take a boat to Manhattan because they would need to take a 20-minute bus ride to get to the Pier. Why haven’t politicians worked to fix the R train?

Other NYC Council members have spoke out how reducing NYC’s budget by one billion+ will cut critical public services from residents, but Brannan has not.
In January, Speaker Adams denounced the Mayor’s proposed budget modification, as it would cut $1B+ from critical public services that she said “meet the essential needs of all NYers.”
— Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@ZohranKMamdani) February 23, 2023
But then she didn’t bring that modification to a vote, allowing it to be enacted.
I asked why. pic.twitter.com/JA6vOkar6E
By now, Senator Gounardes should have protested the Mayor as NYC cut CUNY’s funds from from $234 million in 2022 to $194 million in the 2023. (Source)
Bay Ridge, the money just isn’t there for subsidized boat rides to Manhattan, due to billions of dollars being needed for to help the migrants. (Source)

For Jada Camille, the politician’s story is all she was concerned about, not the cost or the impact on the community! Camille doesn’t understand why you or I would be annoyed with the incomplete reporting.
Everyone in this community has watched people get free lunch and our taxes increase every year!
We need new leaders in Bay Ridge who won’t just say they will fix the R train, but actually do it for the whole community!

February 24, 2023Mural on 77th Street Off 3rd Ave. in Bay Ridge

On 77th Street off 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge, there is a beautiful mural of a photographer looking at the Verrazzano Bridge.

To the right of the beautiful mural is this QR code, but I couldn’t get it to scan while I was there or when I went home. It probably contains some information about the artist (which I would love to see!

This artist has been putting up fantastic art in Bay Ridge for years. A Ridgite left a message that Jerry was painted by Alex Borriello!
In 2018, I couldn’t stop smiling when I saw Jerry painted on the wall – see here
During the pandemic, Jerry had a mask and the message: Be Safe!

February 24, 2023CB 10 Meeting in Dyker Heights – February 27th

On Monday, February 27, 2023, Community Board 10 will have a meeting at The Knights of Columbus on 86th Street and 13th Avenue at 7:00 pm.
Five months ago, Dyker Residents from 10th Avenue from 77th Street and the 80’s told us their basements flooded because the city was not maintaining the sewers.
The residents said that Councilman Brannan and Senator Gounardes’ offices did not help them. They were at the September meeting to get help from Community Board 10.
Councilman Brannan was at the September meeting. Was the sewer problem on 10th Avenue corrected, so basements in Dyker Heights homes don’t flood?
Brannan has not been a good council representative for Dyker Heights. Dyker residents do not appreciate how a school was pushed on them. (Info here) When I shared the motel’s plans (next to the school), Brannan denied that motel was going there and wrote that I was lying. (Info)
