They Are Trying to Rezone This Corner with a Nine Story Building and 100 Dwellings -Whoever is Voting For this Rezoning is Heartless!

There’s a huge rezoning for New Utrecht Avenue and 71st Street – where the old bank was located.

The planned building is supposed to be nine stories and have 100 units. This is the old Capital One Bank site on 72nd and New Utrecht Avenue.

There is a public hearing on Thursday, March 9th at 7:00 pm at Il Centro at 8711 – 18th Avenue. (Why is this community meeting being held at a private club?)

Yes, it’s an old picture above with the January 2023 date.

Who represents this area and what have they said about it? Let’s see whose standing up for Brooklyn?

Councilman Brannan represents this area, but because of the recent City Council rezoning, this will not be part of the district.

These jagged district lines put this address into Alexa Aviles – District 38. That’s so strange, but a sign of gerrymandering!

Twenty-seven weeks ago – when this was Brannan’s district, Brannan wrote on social media that this was going to be rental apartments with retail shopping on the ground floor.

Why didn’t Justin Brannan tell the residents that it was going to be a nine story building with 100 units? C’MON.

This is why I do not like Councilman Brannan. Brannan is not forthcoming with information when people ask for information.

Why the Brooklyn Paper or the Home Reporter report about this rezoning, so people know what is going on?

In the Fall, neighbors of the building noted that school desks were moved into the building and that it was an all girl’s private/religious school.

The work filed for the building also said it was going to be a school (from September – see here)

The neighbors of this building had a quiet bank that closed early and was quiet on the weekends. The bank has been closed for a long time too. Now they are going to have at least 100 new neighbors – that’s not right! This building needs to be downsized.

There’s no mention of the of Community Board 11’s Meeting and this huge project on Aviles’ social media page – not Senator Iwen Chu’s or Assemblyman Chan’s social media.

Why aren’t these politicians speaking up for the home owners and residents in the area? Do they even know there is a meeting on 3/9/23?

This is what I mean about leadership – there is no one leading for the residents and home owners here.

Jimmy Johnson from Narrows Botanical Gardens Was on Channel 1 News

Jimmy Johnson from Narrows Botanical Gardens was on Channel 1 Spectrum News. (See the video here)

It started with Johnson talking about the birdhouses that people can get for a donation. He explained that bird houses will encourage more birds to our area.

Then Johnson took them into the greenhouse, which was fantastic!

They have baby turtles (see here), bees and a lot of plants. Jimmy Johnson looked healthy and happy – so go spend some time at NBG to get some health and happiness.

Roger Clark also stopped into Bagel Schmagel last week. (See here)

What Was That Huge Boom in Bay Ridge?

Did you hear that huge BOOM and wonder what it was??

A huge tree fell on the corner of 80th Street and Ridge Blvd. Bill shared pictures of the uprooted tree here.

We were two blocks away – it was loud and different than anything we’ve ever heard.

Why Didn’t Community Board 10 Tell Bay Ridge That People Would Be Making Money Using Our Street Parking?

Community Board 10 let GetAround Car Sharing present at a Community Board 10 meeting.

GetAround told CB 10 it would just be a few parking spots.

GetAround Car Sharing failed to mention that their App allows people to rent their extra cars, like people rent apartments through AirBnB.

We came across it accidently on the app this weekend, when some cars were listed in areas that weren’t on “the designated streets.”

A map is shown of the general area where the car is located, rather than the address:

This truck was one of the vehicles available to rent:

The truck’s owner made money for listing his vehicle on the app because they have sign up bonuses right now.

How much did that truck owner make through the signup bonus?

The 11209 area code has a $750 bonus:

Does Andrew Gounardes know that GetAround is doing this? YES, the information was in GetAround’s Summer press release – see here

Ironically, the head of the Transportation Committee was also the chair of the Youth Services Education Committee when the school at 88th Street and 5th Avenue was decided.

Don’t believe me, WATCH THE TWO MEETING VIDEOS (HERE AND HERE)

Other strange things Community Board 10 didn’t mention:

Bay Ridge already has two car sharing companies that are well-established in our area.

Why would we want another car sharing company to undercuts two established businesses in our community? (Info here)

88th Street in Bay Ridge – Where Century’s Parking Lot Used to Be

Why didn’t CB 10 members from the Transportation Committee of CB 10 researched the California car sharing company?

88th Street in Bay Ridge – Where Century’s Parking Lot Used to Be

Who was supposed to answer the question, why is only one car sharing company presenting in Bay Ridge?
