There will a hearing about 9000 Shore Road on either May 22nd or May 23rd.
Josephine from CB 10 said that Jonathan Rose’s attorney sent Community Board 10 some updates this week. She didn’t say what the updates were.
Residents in the area hired an engineering firm to do a street parking analysis because the developers were minimizing the parking problems.
Ninety residents responded to Community Board 10’s survey about the sewage backups in the area.

May 15, 2023Steve Asked CB 10 For a Crosswalk Outside the Recreation Area on Ft. Hamilton Parkway

At tonight’s Community Board 10 Meeting, Steve asked Community Board 10 to put a crosswalk or a sign for people to slow down near the recreation center on Fort Hamilton Pkwy and 99th Street.
Steve said drivers do not slow down when people are in the street.
Steve noted that special needs children, teenagers and seniors use the recreation center.
It was a great recommendation. This street can be very quiet or it can get very busy. A crosswalk would be useful there (it’s surprising one wasn’t installed there awhile ago).

May 15, 2023Community Board 10 Voted Down the High School Because of the Poor Location

Councilman Brannan wanted to put a high school on Ovington Avenue, where the yellow arrow is in the picture above. There are already three schools on that block.
Fort Hamilton High School in Bay Ridge needs an annex because it currently has 4,580 students at the school. Only 500 students are in the zoned program for students in the area.
One CB 10 member thought it was strange that members wanted to make sure that another school helped Ft. Hamilton High School.
Community Board 10 wanted the Department of Education to choose the Santander Bank location and build an annex to help Fort Hamilton. The president of the Community Education Council in our area gave alternate locations in areas of District 20 where schools were needed.
One person asked who owns this building. CB 10 said, “NYC owns it.” This was not said at any other meeting. The site should be given to PS 30 because they are next door and the school is renting space in an apartment building.
Community Board 10 Members voted overwhelmingly against the school because they had only 45 days to respond and the project manager was not able to answer many questions about the new building.
Most of Community Board 10 voted against the high school at this location. One CB 10 member who voted for the new school spoke out during the meeting, but he didn’t know that Ft. Hamilton was still a great school.

May 15, 2023Pickleball Park at Leif Erickson Park in Bay Ridge

I had no idea there was a Pickleball Park at Leif Erickson on 66th Street and 8th Avenue (across the street from the old Dustbowl and diagonally across the street from Park Asia).

Seven hundred people play at this park. There’s even a Leif Ericson Pickleball Club. (See their website here). They even had a Halloween Pickleball event. (See here)
People of all ages in NYC are obsessed with pickleball.
At the Community Board 10 meeting on Monday, May 15th, Joseph W. requested for the Pickleball Park at Leif Ericson to be renamed Peter Lovett Pickleball Park. Lovett died in 2021. (Info)
Joseph W explained that during Covid, Peter Lovett was the manager at Ft. Hamilton Recreation Center and he wanted seniors to stay active. Peter went to the park every morning and set up the temporary nets, so everyone could play.

May 15, 2023Migrants Are Staying at P.S. 188 in Coney Island

At least 75 migrants are sleeping on cots in PS 188’s gym in Coney Island. They are only supposed to be there temporarily.
If the school was closed, no one would care. But the students are using the school and parents need to feel that their children are safe at school. (See video from parent here)
The NYC Comptroller, Brad Lander went on television to say that PS 188 in Coney Island was a good place for asylum seekers. Why is the Comptroller of NYC commenting? Why doesn’t NYC have someone who is more understanding towards the parents?
CBS shared that some parents are refusing to send their children to school. (See here)
This picture was made yesterday by my constituents near PS 188. Today I spoke to NYC Office of Emergency Management about the school gym turning into a migrant shelter. Commissioner Iscol told me this gym would be used as a “overflow processing facility”. 1/2 pic.twitter.com/Csg2UAzHTb
— Council Member Ari Kagan (@CMAriKagan47) May 15, 2023
Police are protecting the area and news trucks are outside the school finding out parent’s reactions.

Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis was on the news speaking out against hotels and schools being turned in housing for the migrants. She mentioned Brannan.
Councilman @JustinBrannan and other #NYC Democrats may want to continue turning more hotels & schools into shelters and parks into tent cities, but I refuse to help them fund this madness. Tell @POTUS to secure the border and stop misinterpreting NYC’s right to shelter law! pic.twitter.com/RYIqAmPa5W
— Nicole Malliotakis (@NMalliotakis) May 15, 2023
Then Brannan snapped back on Twitter and blamed Malliotakis.

On May 12th, Brannan wrote on Twitter that families were being placed at PS 188, which wasn’t true. (See videos)

May 15, 2023Why Andrew Gounardes Will Not Help Bay Ridge With High Property Taxes…

This session, we saw Senator Andrew Gounardes forget that he represents Bay Ridge AGAIN!
Gounardes flip-flop on “Good Cause Eviction” (he supported the socialist views – see here).
Now Gounardes is pushing a bill he wrote in 2021 that didn’t have any movement for two years. (See here) The bill is about legacy acceptances at colleges.
Even if Gounardes’ bill passed, there is no way for the state government to check that every private college has complied with the law. Alumni will always be able to contact admission offices and admission offices can always add “other requirements” to their current admissions.
When Gounardes was elected to office, he promised Bay Ridge that he was going to fix the property taxes in our area. At the end of his first year, he told me, he was going to get it done the second year. Gounardes is not a man with integrity.
