RIP Mary Nolan – Bay Ridge

Mary Nolan died on August 17th – she was 89 years old.

I met Mary one night soon after we moved to Bay Ridge. Then I continued running into her in bars, at church and other events.
Mary was funny, knowledgeable and quick-witted. We always had a lot to talk about because we are two Irish women, who loved Bay Ridge and talking about the neighborhood.

Mary was very knowledgeable about Irish History and immigration. She had spent many years helping Irish immigrants. Mary was a lobbyist in Washington DC in the 80’s to help advance Irish immigration.
Mary’s club, The Commodore Barry Club and their events were important to her, so hopefully someone else will continue them. (See here)
Everyone in Bay Ridge knew Mary Nolan and everyone stopped to talk with her. I did not know Mary was Donal’s mother until years later (Donal was part of the Brooklyn Bards band). Donal died in April 2022.

RIP Mary. Prayers for Mary’s sister, children and grandchildren.
On Sunday, April 27, 2025, 95th Street and 4th Avenue was named after Mary Nolan. She must be smiling down from Heaven.

August 17, 2023Shangri-La In Bay Ridge Closed – Vegetarian

I was so surprised to hear that Shangri-La on 3rd Avenue and 74th Street closed. I thought people loved that food. There used to be a lot of vegans and vegetarians talking about years ago.
The sign on the place said that Dave’s Garden was opening there, so hopefully they will have a lot of nice dishes for vegetarians.

August 16, 2023Pilo Arts in Bay Ridge Closed – *Slight Twist*

Bay Ridge residents were sad to see Pilo Arts Hair Salon, which has been in business for 45 years have closed their business on 3rd Avenue and 84th Street.

The owners shared this message:

Now here is the slight twist…..even though the Pilo Arts business closed, the building owner is renting out chairs. So some of your favorite stylists may still be working at this location still.
And the building still has the Pilo Arts sign.
That was nice of the owner to share the phone number of stylists (usually salons don’t).
