June 21, 2023NYPD Police Officers in Dyker Heights Arrested Thieves Breaking Into Cars
About 30 cops in Dyker by Saint Bernadette’s. Rumors are it was an attempted home invasion. @JustinBrannan we are less safe since you got elected.@queenoftheclick @JEM_NYC @BrianSullivan96 @NYPD68Pct pic.twitter.com/W7jE0N6iXr
— NYSkdiver (@NYSkdiver) June 22, 2023
There were many police officers were on 13th Avenue and 82nd Street near St. Bernadette Church in Dyker Heights around 9:30 pm.
Residents saw the police had one man in cuffs. The Citizen App shared that a man was arrested for breaking into a vehicle. (See here)
The police search the area for more people. Dyker residents shared videos of the helicopter hoovering over the neighborhood for 45 minutes. (See here) People were worried because it was a huge response by the police for guys breaking into cars – even K9 units were there!
Politicians didn’t communicate with the community to warn them. Alec Brook-Krasny is the Assemblyman and Andrew Gounardes is the Senator. (Update: Brook-Krasny was in Albany – see here)
Finally, Councilman Brannan shared that an off-duty fireman called 911 on guys trying to break into cars near 13th Avenue. Four arrests were made.

Did the police finally take the “visitors” to Dyker Heights seriously because of the off-duty firefighter reporting it? Maybe this will send a message to the visitors.
Thank you to the off-duty Firefighter – Dyker Heights hire him to do this regularly. Thank you for the arrests NYPD.
Update: On the news, they said two cops were injured while trying to take a person into custody.

June 20, 2023Tacos Casa Flowers Opened on 5th Ave & 93rd St.

Casa Flowers opened at 9300 – 5th Avenue – it’s across the street from Staples.
Their sign isn’t up yet, but they have their name in the front window:

On the board outside of Casa Flowers, they advertise hamburgers, fries and cheesesteaks. Kelly’s Tavern is next door, so they may be trying to attract those customers.

Their menu is on Seamless. (See here)
Good luck to the new owners!
Taqueria El Puente used to be at this location.

June 20, 2023Guardians of the Guardian at CB 10’s Meeting

A representative of Guardians of the Guardian was at Community Board 10 last week. Thank you to these great Brooklynites for standing up for Brooklyn!
The last we heard from the Guardians of the Guardian was in 2010 when they worked to get Angel Guardian Home Landmarked. (See here)

This property was always well-maintained. The building was supposed to become yeshiva. (See photo from plans below)

The Guardians of the Guardians came to Community Board 10’s Meeting because they wanted to make sure that what is being built on the property matches the paperwork for 1222- 63rd Street. That building was knocked down and only one wall was left standing. (See red arrow below)

Josephine wrote a letter to Sarah Carroll, the Chair of the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the property received a stop work order. (See here)
Pauline shared this photo on Facebook:

The Guardians of the Guardian originally wanted to landmark the main building and the building on the side, but they weren’t able to. The Landmarking Commission said part was removed before they saw the building.
The strange thing about this landmarking incident was Andrew Gounardes was knowledgeable and led landmarking workshops, yet Gounardes did not show up as the state representative to the NYC Landmarking Meeting. The meeting are on Youtube (See here)
Gounardes deferred to Councilman Justin Brannan. Justin Brannan was not the Councilman for 12th Avenue and 64th Street (Carlos Menchaca was), so Gounardes should not have sent Brannan. Why did the NYC Landmarking meeting continue without an elected representative of the area?
The Landmarking Committee didn’t know Justin Brannan was lobbied over this property! This is how lobbyists run Brooklyn!

Politicians should not have interfered here. (See here)

June 20, 20239 Story Building on 63rd Street & 12th Avenue?!

Josephine, the District Manager of Community Board 10 wrote a letter to Sarah Carroll, the Chair of the Landmarks Preservation Commission about a nine-story building on 63rd and 12th Avenue with a strange property line extending to the 64th Street behind the landmarked Angel Guardian Home!

In September 2022, when this property was being planned for a Jewish Yeshiva, the Landmarks Preservation Commission was VERY detailed about the landmarked property. (See document)

The Guardians of the Guardian shared:
a) The Department of Buildings issued a Partial Stop Work Order
b) Two violations issued with partial stop work order to correct violating condition only, no other work allowed
c) Violation issued for work does not conform to approved drawings
d) Violation issued for missing job site fence.
