Woman in Wheelchair Killed in Kensington, Bklyn

On Sunday afternoon around 1:30 pm, Joyce Greenberg, a woman who uses a wheelchair to get around was struck by a Lexus SUV in Kensington, Brooklyn. (Info) The driver was 73-years old. (Source) The driver was not charged.

People who saw the accident happened tried to help the woman in the wheelchair. (Source) The driver’s passenger is a nurse and police asked her no to touch the woman.

The Daily News shows a crushed wheelchair. (Info)

Barely anyone has talked about this accident because NYC has become immune to all the bad news. I haven’t.

Redeveloping 86th St. in Bay Ridge (Century’s)

Photos: Ripco

I’m surprised no one has shared these plans for 86th Street. This is for where Century’s used to be.

Ripco is doing an amazing job with modern redevelopment plans for 86th Street. I like the walkway from 86th Street to 87th Street.

They have a supermarket planned for 87th Street (formerly the large Century’s Housewares store). They also have a parking lot for 290 cars!

Many of us wrote to Trader Joe’s and asked them to consider Century’s Housewares store on 87th Street after Trader Joe’s didn’t get the Nathan’s location on 86th Street. (Info)

This mini mall looks like it will be a fantastic place to shop! It’s exactly what is needed to revive this location!

The corner of 5th Avenue and 86th Street by Citibank has the logo for Expedition Superstore. That may just be a sample logo they put on the building to show how nice it would look.

The building on the corner of 86th Street and 5th Avenue shows it is in lease negotiations now. That’s good news!

What is familiar in that photo is the orange storefront with the white letters – NYP for New York Presbyterian.

There are also orange banners for NYP. Maybe they were thinking of opening a treatment center on 86th Street?

The only thing I don’t like in these plans is the dark purple section. It says Phase 2 – proposed residential building. I wouldn’t want to see a huge tower on 86th Street.

See Ripco’s plan for Century’s here.

See Ripco’s plan for 5th Ave/86th St. here

Ripco is bringing a lot of hope to Bay Ridge and hopefully a lot of businesses want to get in on this plan!

Another New School – 63rd St. and 14th Ave.

NY Yimby announced that the permits were filed for PS 82, a new school on 14th Avenue and 63rd Street. (Info) HOW STRANGE!

NYC paid almost 10 million to the Catholic Church for the property in 2019.

That amount is a bargain compared to the School Construction Authority’s purchase of Nathans the year prior for $25 million dollars! (The property was purchased on 12/4/18 for $12.25 million and then the developer sold to the School Construction Authority for $25 million seven months later – July 1, 2019.) (Info)

What’s strange here is the location! PS 676 is being built 13th Avenue and 63rd Street (see below). PS 676 will open in September 2024 with seats for 500+ students. (Info)

Photo: Pauline Doll Castagna

Why would PS 82 be built one block away from another new school? #SomethingIsNotRightHere

Yes, some new schools were needed, but oversaturating the area with schools is not necessary.

New schools in Brooklyn are money-makers for some. (Info)

Streets Not Cleaned on Ft. Hamilton Parkway Due to Revel Bikes – No Tickets for the Scooters!

Last week, we noticed Revel electric scooters in parking spots all over Bay Ridge and found the politicians who were lobbied by Revel. (See here)

Revel’s website says that a bike can be parked on the street for 24-hours. Why is a private company’s electric bikes are allowed to be in public parking? NYC has a contract with Citibike for electric bikes already.

Revel recognizes that their bikes can’t be parked on the street during street cleaning:

Fort Hamilton Parkway didn’t get cleaned because Revel bikes were left on the street.

If a car doesn’t move for alternate side, it is ticketed. The Revel bikes were not ticketed. What is stopping the traffic agents from ticketing Revel?

Three Weeks After Senator Gounardes Moved Offices, He Didn’t Change His Address Online

Strangely on Google, the old address was removed, but not replaced:

Senator Gounardes has a full staff, so someone should have taken care of this weeks ago.

Who is Andrew Gounardes helping at the new location if the address is not available? I notice a Brooklynite contacted Gounardes through the form on the website and Gounardes office’ didn’t reply – from last week! (See here) That’s terrible!

RIP Father Calder – Our Lady of Angels Church

Father Kenneth Calder from Our Lady of Angels died today.

Fr. Calder was a priest for 63 years. Many people in Bay Ridge received their sacraments from Father Calder at Our Lady of Angels Church. Fr. Calder was also at St. Patrick’s in the 1960’s – 70’s.

Although Fr. Calder was retired, he counseled many people and they loved him because he was humble, understanding and helpful.

His wake is on Tuesday afternoon at OLA and the Mass is on Wednesday morning.

RIP Father Calder.
