August 11, 2023Retirees Won Another Lawsuit, But Still Have to Fight For Their Healthcare

Today, Judge Lyle Frank permanently banned the Adams administration from changing the healthcare of retired NYC workers. (Info)
Many people messaged me today and sent links about the court case. Some asked why I didn’t share the good news yet.
I didn’t share it right away because it was disappointing to see that Jonah Allon, the press secretary for Mayor Adams, said “We are extremely disappointed in this ruling and intend to appeal.” That was an awful response after the judge was clear. (Source)
This is personal for the retirees who have serious health issues and need to see specific doctors. For the Mayor or Jonah Allon, this is politics. For those losing their healthcare plans, this is stressful for them and their spouses.
The Court ruled that way because those 250,000 former NYC employees should not lose the healthcare they worked decades for!
The plan to change healthcare was originally from Bill de Blasio. (Source) Haven’t we learned that what de Blasio did wrecked NYC?
The retirees are expecting an appeal. But they shouldn’t be!
Councilman Charles Barron, said that NYC needs to stop wasting taxpayer dollars appealing righteous decisions by the Court. (Source)
Councilman Justin Brannan’s response was also not acceptable. Brannan put himself on the wrong side of this situation. When the court ruling came out, Brannan should have congratulated the retirees and apologized.
Instead of representing the constituents of Bay Ridge, who are retirees, Brannan played NYC Finance Chairman. Read the red box below:

Even Justin Brannan’s social media doesn’t say he is the Councilman for District 43 – it says Chairman of the NYC Council Finance Committee.

Justin’s position as the Finance Chair prevented him from standing with the retirees. Brannan didn’t even write an article in support of the former union workers in the local paper. Why didn’t our local papers report about NYC retirees? This has been going on for months!

Marianne Pizzitola, the head of the retirees fought hard and was determined to help all the retirees!
Not a lot of politicians supported Pizzitola and the retirees, but there were representatives from both parties who believed the city had a contract with these NYC employees.

In April, even Congress representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke out and called the private healthcare plan a “cash cow” for private insurers. (Source) Why did Justin Brannan remain silent?
Pizzitola contacted Brannan on social media and publicly shared that Justin Brannan allowed the retirees money to be taken away in the budget!

August 11, 2023RIP John the Fudgie Man – Coney Island Legend

Everyone who went to Coney Island or Brighton Beach from 1949 to 2018, knew John, the guy who sold refreshments on the beach.
By the end of each Summer, John had the deepest tan.
Everyone loved John because he had a cooler full of cold water, Sunny Dews, knishes and fudge pops.
He was best known for the fudge pops because John would walk the beach with his cooler and say, “Fudgies here, get your fudgies wudgies.”
A lot people called John “Fudgie Wudgie’ or Fudgie Man, even when they knew his name.
As he got older, John had a cart for his cooler and chair. See a video of John here.

John was in his 90’s. He stopped selling on the beach in 2018 or 2019. At one point, people thought he passed away in 2019, so an artist designed this shirt in his honor.

RIP John. You are a Brooklyn original and part of a lot of people’s great memories of Coney Island.
