Why Isn’t Gounardes Funding the NYPD For All Their Time Monitoring Cannabis Shops?

NYPD outside of Gelator on 86th Street today.

When Senator Gounardes voted in favor of cannabis shops, who did he think was going to monitor these shops?

The NYPD has enough to do. Gounardes failed to make sure plans were in place and now our police are spread thinner. We have the wrong people in government.

Muslim Restaurant Owner Invited Neighbors For Shabbat Dinner in Brooklyn on January 26th

In December, Ayat Restaurant expanded and opened a restaurant in Ditmas Park. Ayat is a well-loved restaurant in Bay Ridge and Industry City.

The owners received some terrible hate messages after moving into Ditmas Park.

Abdul Elenani responded by inviting the community for Shabbat dinner at Ayat Restaurant on January 26th at 9:00 pm

While I don’t think many Jewish people will go to have dinner because it isn’t kosher, maybe some will go to accept an olive branch from a new business owner who means well.

Pray for Abdul and Ayat’s peace – they just had a new baby.

Purse Snatcher: Black Ski Mask and Santa Hat 77th Street

Around 9:20 pm tonight, a woman had her purse snatched by a man on 77th Street and 4th Avenue in bay Ridge.

The thief rode away on a black moped towards 5th Avenue.

Police say he was wearing black ski mask and a Santa hat.

It looks like another Bay Ridge woman had a purse snatched by a person on moped – (See here).

Protest Outside of Justin Brannan’s Office 1/6/24

At noon yesterday, a large group of #BayRidge residents gathered outside Councilman Brannan’s office.

Their signs show that Brannan had lost the trust of many people in the community because he failed to communicate with them.

While you may have found out about the homeless shelter being planned for Bay Ridge in November from Community Board 10’s one-minute announcement (see here), many people are just finding out this about the shelter from January 3rd’s protest. (See here)

I did not find a flyer for this protest. The planners gave neighbors a heads up about the shelter by sharing information on a sign in Arabic (see below).

Google Translate: It has been announced that a homeless shelter in Bay Ridge will be here, consisting of seven floors. It will be built to accommodate more than one hundred homeless people, which will be a disaster for the area. There are four schools for children nearby. On January 6th, there is a protest outside Justin Brannan’s office at 12:00 pm.

I doubt that Councilman Brannan has provided any information about the homeless shelter in Arabic or Cantonese/Mandarin, since we haven’t seen any information about the shelter from Brannan in print.

Have you seen any translated information from Councilman Brannan or Community Board 10 about the shelter on social media?

Residents looking for information about the shelter will find the Brooklyn Reporter’s article on December 18th. (Here) The article does not say anything about this being for veterans. Why didn’t Councilman Brannan share information with Jamie DeJesus?

For years, Councilman Brannan has not been interested in housing the homeless. Homeless men and women have been riding the R train into Bay Ridge and politicians are not interested in helping them. Gounardes and Brannan just campaign and take photos at the subway. *Other NYC Councilmembers put $4.5 million toward housing (See here)

Picture is blurry because it’s from video (here)

In 2021, RadioFree Bay Ridge revealed that 120 Bay Ridge residents lived in shelters. How do they know? People who applied for shelter, used 11209 on the form. Councilman Brannan refuses to put any of the budget for this district into housing, even after Radiofree Bay Ridge revealed that information. (More info) When Brannan did not set the money aside for affordable housing, all of the people needing help, didn’t receive it!

Justin Brannan knew that there was a protest outside of his office on Saturday. If he were a leader, Brannan would have shown up at the office and invited them in. Yes, Brannan’s office is closed on Saturday. When Brannan ran for election the first time, he said he was going to have evening and weekend hours (but he doesn’t).

Sign from video

Instead, the councilman went to social media and wrote the following:

An elected politician should never be play social media games like this!

It’s great that the American flag flew overhead to remind everyone (including Councilman Brannan) that people have the right to protest against a homeless shelter and a politician, who failed to communicate with the entire community.

People don’t want to protest on the weekend. They are doing it to stand up for our community! Thank you to our neighbors for protesting!

It’s shocking for people in our community to see all of these robberies, crashes and developers winning. How did the developer get (this far) without any community input? Brannan said he didn’t know about the homeless shelter! There was paperwork with NYC since May.

This isn’t the first time Justin Brannan blindsided his community about homeless housing in Bay Ridge. In November 2022, Councilman Brannan failed to inform the community about the homeless apartments at Shore Hill Housing at 9000 Shore Road and 91st Street.

At the CB 10 meeting in November 2022, we all heard Jonathan Rose’s developers tell the residents, who live next to Shore Hill Apartments, that 30% of housing in Shore Hill Apartments would be for homeless seniors.

Jonathan Rose receives funding or a tax break for including this type of housing in the plans (I’m not sure which one because neither Councilman Brannan or Community Board 10 told Bay Ridge). Then notes from that meeting are (here).

There is no way that Justin Brannan didn’t know that information. It should have been shared before the meeting. Brannan didn’t even have the respect to apologize to the community for failing to communicate that information!

After CB 10’s meeting at Shore Hill, Councilman Brannan didn’t share the Ulurp for Shore Hill with the whole community (Info here) In September, CB 10 said Shore Hill lost the parking spots. I noted some strange things: (See here)

Los Cantaros – New Mexican Restaurant 4th Ave.

Congratulations to Rogelio Ortiz, the new owner of Los Cantaros Restaurant in Bay Ridge!

Los Cantaros Restaurante is on 4th Avenue between 86th and 87th Streets.

The word ‘Los Cantaros’ means the pitchers in Spanish.

Bay Ridge lost Los Lobos Restaurant on 3rd Avenue and 86th at the start of the new year, so people will be glad to try this new place with their friends! (Info here)

I didn’t find a menu for this address yet, but I did find a menu for Los Cantaros, so maybe it is like this.

Why Did the Brooklyn DA Fail To File An Indictment For a Crime Within Six Days?

On Saturday, December 23rd, a 49-year-old woman was raped and robbed at a business on 59th Street near 9th Avenue in Brooklyn. (Info here and here)

On Tuesday, December 28th, a 22-year-old Bay Ridge man was arrested. (Info here and here)

On Thursday, January 4th, a 25-year-old Brooklyn man was arrested as the second suspect in the crime. (Info here and here)

Brooklyn residents began to share online that the 22-year-old suspect had been released without bail. That is not correct.

On Friday, January 5th, the NY Post reported the man was released on Wednesday, January 3rd. (Info) The suspect’s attorney cited that Brooklyn District Attorney failed to indict his client within 6 days. (Info here and here ) Now the man is not going to be charged with this crime! *Why hasn’t the news and every newspaper in New York City reported this information?

District Attorney Eric Gonzalez has not issued any statements and is not accountable to Brooklyn. There is no information on the (DA’s Website) or social media FOUR DAYS AFTER THE SUSPECT WAS RELEASED! Gonzalez doesn’t think Brooklyn needs to know!

The man is out on supervised release. How long is he going to be supervised?

How many times has the DA let people go because they failed to issue an indictment in time?

How has this kept rape and other crime rates low? DA Gonzalez keeps mentioning how crime is down. (See here)

If an Assistant DA made the mistake and Gonzalez didn’t catch it, then he needs to step down! He didn’t even have the decency to apologize to the woman who raped!

The three leaders for that area have not said anything about it! I don’t know if it is because they don’t know (it’s not on the news) or if they don’t want to speak out against DA Gonzalez:

a) Councilwoman Susan Zuang: [email protected] or @susanzhuangnyc

b) Senator Iwen Chu: [email protected] @SenIwenChu

c) Assemblyman Lester Chan: [email protected]

@AMLesterChangNY

These local leaders should have contacted Governor Kathy Hochul for an investigation by now, but tt looks like the politicians are trying to let it go because Eric Gonzalez is their friend.

The 49-year-old Brooklyn woman deserves justice and she deserves to feel safe! This mistake can not just be pushed under the rug and forgotten because it happened in an immigrant community. Her employees must be very worried as well.

#SomethingIsntRightHere How did an experienced District Attorney make this big of a mistake? Brooklyn needs a new District Attorney, who is able to do the job!

Finally, please pray for the woman who was attacked. When the first man was arrested, she told the news she hadn’t slept since it happened.

Amo Moped Store Opened on 5th in Bay Ridge

Amo Moped store has started to set up at 9413 – 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge. So far there are moped, a lot of helmets and gear in the store.

This was formerly the location for Plugged-In Sneaker Boutique. Plugged-In Sneakers moved to 538 86th Street last month.

Hopefully, these apartments and businesses next to this shop have excellent smoke alarms.

Good luck to the new owners! Let’s hope they take precautions and keep everyone safe. Maybe the FDNY can speak with them about the batteries?

Protest Outside Councilman Brannan’s Office 1/6

Today at 12:00 pm, people will be protesting outside Councilman Justin Brannan’s office at 8203 – 3rd Avenue at 12:00 pm.

Several people shared this information, but I didn’t find a flyer about the protest.

Councilman Brannan’s communication to the community about the homeless shelter has been awful!

Brannan thinks everyone is on Facebook and has not informed the community about the shelter’s building plans that were filed with NYC.

Many people who live near 4th Avenue and 66th Street are just finding out about the homeless shelter planned near their homes after they saw the protest this week! Parents whose children go to school nearby are not happy about this location.

By now, Councilman Brannan should have sent an information sheet to the community with the information about this proposed shelter and when a public meeting will be held about it. When people don’t have information, it makes them worried. How did the developer get this far (see information) without community input?
