CB 18 Voted Unanimously Against The City of Yes

Community Board 18 held their ‘City of Yes Vote’ tonight! CB 18 represents the neighborhoods of Bergen Beach, Canarsie, Flatlands, Georgetown, Marine Park, Mill Basin, Mill Island and Paerdegat Basin.
A friend shared a link to their meeting. They were a spirited group of Brooklynites and fun to watch! (Frank Seddio is a member of this board.)
Community Board 18 unanimously voted against the City of Yes!
Things they spoke about that Community Board 10 and our politicians have not said:
1) The City of Yes is about deregulating housing.
2) If residential property is turned into commercial property, then the property taxes for that property will be even higher. Remember, in other parts of Brooklyn, the property taxes are considerably lower.
3) Community Board 18 mentioned the large turnout in Bay Ridge! They spoke about communities not wanting The City of Yes. Then they spoke about who was pushing this project.
One speaker said that the head of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce worked on the City of Yes Plan. Then I looked it up and Randy is pushing for it:

This is very strange as The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has not been helpful to businesses in Bay Ridge! There are empty stores all over our neighborhood, why hasn’t the Chamber of Commerce helped small business owners secure these storefronts?
The presidents of all of NYC’s Chambers of Commerce thought it was appropriate for all of them to go to Somos in 2022. NYC should do away with this position!

4) Community Board 18 talked about the importance of voting down each measure.
A lot has happened to NYC in the last three years. The Mayor, politicians like Andrew Gounardes who are pushing the City of Yes don’t realize that NY’ers have had enough. What good things are happening here for middle class NY’ers who are being overtaxed?

January 17, 2024RIP Xiaohong Chen – Dyker Heights Mother

Last night near 8:00 pm, a Dodge Ram hit Xiohong Chen on 69th Street and 13th Avenue. She was pinned under the truck. Mrs. Chen was brought to Maimonides and died. (Story here and here)
Xiohong Chen was 51-years-old and the mother of a 14-year-old son. A Go Fund Me was set up to assist the family with bills. (See here)

The 72-year-old driver stayed on the scene. No one was charged with Xiohong’s death. Streetsblog showed the number of “school zone speed camera violations (Here)
Senator Andrew Gounardes wrote the camera legislation, but the legislation does not penalize repeat offenders. While Streetsblog wanted to talk about the driver, let’s talk about the faulty legislation that allows people speeding in school zones to continue to speed in school zones.

Senator Gounardes doesn’t acknowledge that his poor legislation allows repeat offenders to speed:

A teenage boy is without his mother and no one was charged for her death. Prayers for Xiohong’s family.

January 17, 2024Lester Chang Voted Against the Bill – The Web Showed An Old Vote

Assemblyman Lester Chang said he voted against Assembly Bill A1234. You can see the bill here.
I didn’t understand the importance of the bill until I read the Senate version, which I pasted below)
The NY Assembly website did not have the roll call, but now it does. Lester voted No as he said he did.
When the vote was not on the Assembly site, I looked at Legiscan which shows the correct date, but not the correct vote. (See Here) These were the 2023 votes – even though it says it is 2024.

Aren’t we all tired of the focus on cannabis? Every year these politicians keep doing the same thing!

January 16, 2024Why Didn’t Councilman Brannan Send Someone to the Reopening Ceremony of the Library at John Dewey High School?

Coney Island residents aren’t loving the newly elected Councilman.
Councilman Justin Brannan showed up for a Martin Luther King event, but failed to show up at for the Reopening Ceremony of the newly renovated Library at John Dewey High School last Tuesday.
Councilman Brannan was scheduled to be there, but didn’t show. This must have been disappointing to the high school students.

Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny and State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton both sent representatives. Why didn’t Brannan send his chief-of-staff? Chris McCreight is also the Democrat District Leader of this area.
Councilman Brannan probably thought no one would notice.
I am glad to see Coney Island leaders speaking out!
Sadly, Brannan and Chris McCreight thought it was appropriate to have a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in Coney Island with lobbyists from the casino! McCreight should have spoken out against the lobbyists, but he was silent as usual.

Why doesn’t Councilman Brannan have enough money to sponsor a Martin Luther King Jr. event in his district without lobbyists?
Coney Island residents wrote on Facebook that they weren’t aware of the Martin Luther King event until three days before the event. I didn’t see Chris McCreight or Justin Brannan share the flyer on social media either.
Why do Chris McCreight and Justin Brannan think that there is only one group that can run a basketball team in Coney Island? They could easily use a different group.
Brannan posted this picture posing in front of the casino’s banner. (Click here) See more photos here.
Years ago, Chris McCreight was outspoken about lobbyists and Republican leaders. I had no idea what a lobbyist was until they told me. Why is McCreight alright with children wearing the logo for the casino? Even Mathlyde Frontus spoke out against this in the Summer!

Front the advertisement (seen above)
Last May, I told you why Councilman Brannan would be the worst thing for Coney Island. (See here) Brannan has been lobbied over the casino.

While neither Brannan or McCreight have children, do you think they would do this at St. Patrick’s or any other school in Bay Ridge?

January 15, 2024Construction Began at The St. Nicholas Home, Even Though CB 10 Failed to Provide An Update

Work has begun at The St. Nicholas Home on Ovington Avenue in Bay Ridge. Amy shared a video here.
The location is going to become a high school, even though Community Board 10 voted against it. (Info)

In May, Community Board 10 voted to reject the high school at the Ovington Avenue location because other locations weren’t pursued and the Committee wasn’t given enough information. (See here) Councilman Brannan and the School Construction Authority failed to answer the committees questions.
It’s January – eight months later and Community Board 10 didn’t provide the community with an update.
At the November 2023 meeting, Josephine told Community Board 10 that there was going to be an update about the school the week of the meeting. (Seen here at 24:00)
This was what was said in 12 seconds:

***On December 5, 2023, NYC held a public hearing about the school location on Ovington Avenue.

Why did Community Board 10 failed to share this meeting with Bay Ridge residents at the November meeting or through their e-newsletter? You can see NYC’s announcement on a PDF (if you click this link,– it doesn’t just open – it downloads the pdf to your computer.)
There are all of these steps for approval of a school so that one person isn’t making the decisions for a community. But it continues to happen in our community because people allow it.
At the December Community Board meeting, the Chair did not provide an update about the high school. (See the video) Councilman Brannan spoke at the meeting, but not about the school. No one on CB 10 asked Brannan for an update about the high school, so they must already know!
Surprisingly, Jaynemarie Capetanakis, the Chair of Community Board 10 stood and smiled as Brannan spoke. Why didn’t she ask him about the high school?

In July, Councilman Justin Brannan told a private Facebook group he was proceeding with the high school. (Info) Isn’t it called fascism when only one person is making decisions?

NYC Council voted in favor of the school because the council representatives vote the way Justin Brannan wanted them to vote (yes, they usually vote the way the local representative wants). A Bay Ridge resident shared this news clip:

The Months Before the Meeting Some Strange Things Happened:
1) In December 2022, Brannan put out a video about this location on Tik Tok calling it a 900+ seat elementary school. He wasn’t going to make it a high school. The video has been deleted, but look:

2) In February 2023, the property’s mortgage was paid. You can see this on Acris. (Here) Block: 05873 Lot: 0077 and Lot 73.

3) Also in February 2023, the news reported the new high school (See here) because Brannan tweeted about it. (See here)
4) Why didn’t Community Board 10 vote on it in January 2023? How did Brannan get so far without Community Board 10 approving the school location? #SomethingIsn’tRightHere.
By May, why did they hold a vote if it was a done deal?
It’s what you allow Bay Ridge.
