January 23, 2024This is Just the First Three Cars of The R Train

The R Train has a lot more homeless people on it now. Andrew Gounardes will not help them. Why?

We need a representative who wants these people to be taken care of.

This is just the first three train cars on the R train this morning. People heading to work kept going down further looking for a train without homeless people on it.

January 22, 2024Not Good….Neighborhood Advisory Crime and Safety Meeting Isn’t Going to Do Anything!

The Neighborhood Advisory Board held a meeting at the Dyker Heights Library tonight. About twenty people attended the meeting.

The chair announced the meeting on Facebook yesterday (see below). Did they really want people to attend the meeting?

The chair of this group was appointed by Senator Gounardes.
That’s a bad sign because Senator Andrew Gounardes ignores crime (he never mentions it or even warns residents about dangerous situations in the neighborhood).
This group thinks safety is for individuals to take care of themselves….meaning they aren’t going to do anything about what is happening in the community.
Their advice: Buy a dashcam for your car to protect yourself from the reckless scooter and bicycle riders. Instead of dealing with the problems to protect everyone in the community, they want you and I to buy dashcams.
Their advice tonight : Get a whistle and pepper spray to protect yourself against rape/assault (just be careful not to get the full strength pepper spray because it is illegal in NYC. ) Again, there was no change for the community!
Their advice: Consider getting cameras and/or and alarm for your home. Why did this group have a meeting? Everyone knows all of these very basic things!
On social media, a resident asked if this group was going to make changes. The group’s leader said : “I don’t really have the power to change anything but there will be NYPD there so if you have any concerns you would like addressed, they will be there.”
NYC’s website says the advisory groups are for areas of poverty. (See here)
The head of this group talked about neighborhood grants. He said he shared information about the grants on the Bay Ridge Talk Facebook group. No one at the meeting heard of it. I searched Bay Ridge Talk for his name or info on the grants and nothing came up.

January 22, 2024CB 10 Voted Against the Dispensary on 86th St.

We were glad to hear Community Board 10 vote against the cannabis shop that is setting up on 86th Street and 12th Avenue.
Community Board 10’s vote is “just advisory” because there is a cannabis department in the government which decides if a cannabis shop gets set up on your street.

See this street view map here
The address of the shop is 1205 – 86th Street.
This location is next to people’s homes! That storefront used to be for a bridal shop. (We are sorry for all the stress this is causing people on 86th Street and around 12th Avenue.)
When Senator Andrew Gounardes voted to legalize cannabis, he was not able to calculate how those changes will hurt Brooklyn.
We have ILLEGAL pot shops all over the neighborhood and Gounardes has not moved to shut them down. The fact that a business can operate illegally for almost two years and the Senator just stands by is RIDICULOUS.
Gounardes should be working to stop cannabis shops next to people’s homes! We need leaders who can speak out for our community.

January 22, 2024PS 413 – What Happens When a Politician Does the School Setup, Instead of Parents!

At Community Board 10 tonight, a CB 10 member discussed the new school coming 3rd Avenue and Senator Street. The school is called K053 or PS 413.
This elementary school is supposed to open this September. The school will be for 310 Students, but this year they will only have two kindergarten classes.
Curriculum:
Literacy – HMH
Phonics – Haggerty
Mathematics – Envision by Savvas
Social Studies – Passport to social studies
Science – Amplify Science
Afterschool – they will have afterschool, but parents have to pay for the afterschool
When the school was introduced, the community was told that there was supposed to be a PreK, but it turns out the school is not going to have a PreK.
In June, parents were asked what they would like at the school. Yet none of the things parents asked for have been integrated into this school.
The new school is:
– Not going to have District 75 seats (how is that even allowed?)
– Not going to have NEST program
– The school will not have the twice exceptional program
– The school will not have project-based learning
– The school will not have a garden or edible school yard
The school has some good things: It was named The School of International World Studies. I didn’t see that shared anywhere!

On social media, I saw the school was going to have a dual language Kindergarten class, so that’s good!

This parent recommended that in the future, the Community Board needs to be aware of what programs will be at the school before they vote. Parents need more of an input in community schools! (Applause for this parent for sharing this information.)
Later in the meeting, another CB 10 member sympathized and said that the Community Board is only allowed to vote on the location.
Thank Councilman Brannan for a no frills school. Politicians can’t be making decisions about schools ALONE. When the politicians are gone, the community is left with a school that they aren’t excited about. School decisions need to be made by the community.
To Brannan, the terms NEST Program and project-based learning are just buzz words. To parents, these are great programs which engaged children! Don’t settle parents!
The Councilman didn’t share that this school won’t have any special programs!

January 22, 2024Why Did Lester Chang Accept a Trip To China?
UPDATE: The National Counterintelligence and Security Center issued warnings. Lester Chang was in the military. Why wouldn’t Chang take the warnings seriously? (See here)
Brooklyn please see (this article.)

Why do politicians think it is alright to accept a trip from a private group? Assemblyman Lester Chang and others went to China in December.
The American Chinese Commerce Association funded the trip. (Story here)

The Chinese TV stations widely reported about these politicians. (See their video)
And the headlines showed:

The trip was approved by legislative ethics officials, (Source) but why do politicians here think they need these trips.
Strangely, Assemblyman Chang didn’t share even one photo of the trip on social media, so I guess he didn’t see anything new or “learn anything.”
As we know, nothing in life is free!! What does this group want these politicians to do?
I really liked Assemblyman Chang. I like that he isn’t a politician, but I am disappointed to see him accept a trip (regardless of the group, NY politicians do not need to travel out-of-the-state “for work.”) I have written about both Democrats and Republicans accepting trips in the past!
Update: I thought there was something else strange about Chang, but I was incorrect. (See here)
