CB 10 and The 68th Precinct Discussed Drag Racing in Bay Ridge and Motorbikes in The Parks

Community Board 10 asked the 68th Precinct officers: What can be done about the teenagers riding on motorbikes in the parks? This has become a problem in Bay Ridge.

The officers said that numerous tickets have been given for unlicensed scooters. They have also confiscated many bikes. The lieutenant said that one guy was arrested after complaints because he was a drug dealer.

Community Board 10 asked what can be done about the drag racing on 5th Avenue and 69th Street (near the Pier). The NYPD lieutenant said that officers are working in the community from 10:00 pm until 6:00 pm. They have given summons and arrested some people. The police can not keep a unit on Shore Road for 24-hours. They patrol the area and they are doing the best they can.

The 68th Precinct has found that some of the drag racers are driving rented cars.

Some of the drivers are repeat offenders that the precinct knows.

The police officers said that some of the drivers are driving with a revoked license.

If the driver is a juvenile, the NYPD contacts their parents.

If you see a car drag racing, take a photo of the car. If you can get a photo of the plate, that helps too. Send the photo to the NCO.

** In addition, the NYPD officers said that numerous arrests have been made for people stealing cars on Shore Road. Why don’t the police share that information with the community? People would be glad to know that someone was arrested.

Community Board 10 announced at their meeting this week that the Office of Cannabis Management came out with a proximity protection map.

Once a new cannabis business has applied fully for the cannabis license, then they will have proximity protection within 1000 feet of their shop. (Applied fully means they have a lease or a conditional lease).

The cannabis license for 455 86th Street is pending. So the smoke shop at 522- 86th Street would be within 1000 feet and wouldn’t be able to sell cannabis legally.

The cannabis license for 6918 – 5th Avenue is also pending. CB 10 gave a negative opinion because the owner did not fill out the questionnaire or show up to the meeting. That becomes part of their application.

We will be able see if Community Boards mean anything to the Office of Cannabis Management as the 5th Avenue shop should not receive a license because they have an incomplete application.

Housing Being Built in Leif Ericson Park

4/16 Update: Several residents shared that the structures have been removed from the park.

Today, some men built a structure at Leif Ericson Park on 65th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenue. The structure is to keep four people dry while they sleep. Residents say another group has been in the park for two weeks. (See photo here)

NYC hasn’t done a good job in providing housing for people.

People were upset that the group started a fire (to stay warm) and they reported it to 311. Firefighters came and put out the fire, but the group lit the fire after the firefighters left.

For years, people have been tucked away in different parts of this park seeking safety and sleep.

68th Precinct at The Knights of Columbus 4/17

Bring your problems and your questions to the 68th Precinct on Wednesday, April 17th at 7:00 pm at the Knight of Columbus at 1305 – 86th Street.

Get ready to hear, “CRIME IS DOWN.” It’s not! Look at the TOTAL line – 20 (at the same time last year there was only 14 crimes reported).

Daryl Dawkins was murdered on 3rd Avenue last week and the 68th Precinct hasn’t shared a picture of the killer or even a description. (Info here and here)

Also a father was stabbed by teens on Bay Ridge Avenue. (See here) Someone whose disconnected from our community will say crime is down. Were the teens caught – no update was given to the community by the 68th Precinct or any politicians.
