April 14, 2024Community Board 10 and The 68th Precinct Discussed the Murder at Catch 22

A 37-year-old man named Daryl Dawkins was stabbed in the chest on April 7th at 2:50 am at Catch 22 Bar and Restaurant on 3rd Avenue and 72nd Street. (Info here)
Community Board 10 had a Police and Public Safety Committee Meeting this week. Usually this committee only talks about liquor licenses in Bay Ridge, but this month they had three police officers from the 68th Precinct present because of the murder and stabbing last week. Lieutenant Christopher Vincent and two Community Affairs officers answered questions.
Community Board 10 mentioned that Catch 22 had difficulty before this incident. Community Board 10 met with the owner of Catch 22 in June 2023. Last year, Community Board 10 requested that Catch 22 close the bar earlier because there were numerous complaints about noise. The SLA and NY allows bars to stay open until 4:00 am.
CB 10 asked if the stabbing happened in the bar or outside the bar. Lieutenant Vincent said that Daryl Dawkins was stabbed inside the bar.
The man who stabbed Dawkins is NOZT an employee of Catch 22 (which was written on Facebook).
The suspect was inside the bar at some point during the evening. On social media, someone said the killer was not a patron at Catch 22. The Lieutenant also said the investigation was still going on.
No one has been arrested for the murder yet.

April 14, 2024CB 10 and The 68th Precinct Discussed Drag Racing in Bay Ridge and Motorbikes in The Parks

Community Board 10 asked the 68th Precinct officers: What can be done about the teenagers riding on motorbikes in the parks? This has become a problem in Bay Ridge.
The officers said that numerous tickets have been given for unlicensed scooters. They have also confiscated many bikes. The lieutenant said that one guy was arrested after complaints because he was a drug dealer.

Community Board 10 asked what can be done about the drag racing on 5th Avenue and 69th Street (near the Pier). The NYPD lieutenant said that officers are working in the community from 10:00 pm until 6:00 pm. They have given summons and arrested some people. The police can not keep a unit on Shore Road for 24-hours. They patrol the area and they are doing the best they can.
The 68th Precinct has found that some of the drag racers are driving rented cars.
Some of the drivers are repeat offenders that the precinct knows.
The police officers said that some of the drivers are driving with a revoked license.
If the driver is a juvenile, the NYPD contacts their parents.
If you see a car drag racing, take a photo of the car. If you can get a photo of the plate, that helps too. Send the photo to the NCO.
** In addition, the NYPD officers said that numerous arrests have been made for people stealing cars on Shore Road. Why don’t the police share that information with the community? People would be glad to know that someone was arrested.

April 14, 2024
Community Board 10 announced at their meeting this week that the Office of Cannabis Management came out with a proximity protection map.
Once a new cannabis business has applied fully for the cannabis license, then they will have proximity protection within 1000 feet of their shop. (Applied fully means they have a lease or a conditional lease).
The cannabis license for 455 86th Street is pending. So the smoke shop at 522- 86th Street would be within 1000 feet and wouldn’t be able to sell cannabis legally.
The cannabis license for 6918 – 5th Avenue is also pending. CB 10 gave a negative opinion because the owner did not fill out the questionnaire or show up to the meeting. That becomes part of their application.
We will be able see if Community Boards mean anything to the Office of Cannabis Management as the 5th Avenue shop should not receive a license because they have an incomplete application.
