August 23, 2024Councilman Justin Brannan Spent the Week in Chicago Then E-mailed Us This…

Councilman Brannan was in Chicago at the Democrats National Convention. He returned on Friday. Brannan sent us this email to tell us that this was a busy week!!!
Brannan hung out at the convention with his buddies and went out to restaurants all week. It wasn’t a busy week for getting things done for Bay Ridge, that’s for sure.
Years ago, Justin Brannan would have mocked a politician for e-mailing people after being away all week.
We need a representative that is here and present with us – one that can take action!

August 23, 2024Andrew Gounardes Dropped the Ball on NYS Funding Afterschool

In June, Senator Andrew Gounardes knew that some schools in Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights would not receive funding for their afterschool programs.
Yet, Andrew Gounardes failed to tell families and the community that programs on this side of his district were cut. No one is speaking out from the other side of Gounardes’ district, so their programs must have been funded!

In July, some parents found out that they had to pay thousands for afterschool, while at other schools it is free. (Info)
In August, District 20’s Community Education Council held a meeting and parents were upset that afterschool was cut. Senator Gounardes did not attend, even though he could have attended remotely through Zoom. Gounardes didn’t send a representative from his office with information either.

In August, we saw Senator Gounardes ask Bay Ridge parents to attend a fundraiser for his former employee’s not-for-profit. I’m not sure it’s ethical for a senator to use his position to ask constituents to attend a fundraiser for his friend. Gounardes did not reveal the head of this organization was his former staffer.

The Daily News did a story about the afterschool programs being defunded in our area on August 22nd. (Info here) That’s when Gounardes decided to communicate. It took him TWO MONTHS to share this information! (See here)
Other politicians are sharing information about childcare – Gounardes did not even do that!

Senator Gounardes put $250,000 towards the ferry to Governor’s Island. (Info) People who are hanging out on Governor’s Island on the weekend can afford to pay for their own ferry ride! Many families can’t afford to pay for afterschool.
Year ago, Andrew Gounardes would have been the first person calling out a politician who allowed school programs to be defunded! Now Gounardes is a silent man, who doesn’t share information or have community meetings because he dropped the ball!
By now, Senator Gounardes should have communicated a plan to replace the missing funds!

August 23, 2024People Living on the Side of The Belt Parkway

A resident saw that people were living on the side of the Belt Parkway at Exit 8. They called 311 to get help for the people because small children were running around the area.
311 said no one was living there and closed the call.
NYC tried to stop people from staying in that location. They put up the fence after they received complaints from residents in the Spring.

August 23, 2024Senator Iwen Chu Has a Petition Against the Homeless Shelter BECAUSE It’s Election Season!

Senator Iwen Chu’s hasn’t said much about the homeless shelter. Last year, this topic was not important to her. (See here)

It’s election season now, so Iwen sent out a letter stating that she has a meeting with the Mayor.

Senator Chu’s letter for people to sign says that people “oppose the process.“
Brooklyn residents oppose a 150 male shelter being added to their neighborhood. This isn’t a family shelter or a shelter for women, it’s for 150 men and people oppose it because they have seen what has happened in other neighborhoods. (See here, here, here and here)
Where was Senator Chu’s call for transparency in 2023 when talk about the shelter started?
Instead of calling the Mayor’s office and inviting him for lunch, Iwen went on a rant on social media saying how many days the Mayor’s office did not respond to her request:

The Mayor hates when someone tries to publicly embarrass him on social media because he is doing as much as he can in trying to manage crime, housing the migrants and the rest of NYC’s problems.

August 22, 2024New Painting on 78th Street & 3rd Avenue

An artist from California painted an American flag and Joe Peppino’s signature saying: “God Bless You and God Bless America” on 78th Street off 3rd Avenue.
See the video:
@peppinojoe ? original sound – PeppinoJoe
I love when business owners add beauty to the neighborhood because it is important to them!
Joe owns Peppino’s Brick Oven Pizza and Peppino’s Liquor. Stop by 78th Street to see the mural and then grab a pizza (or the salad Nan told us about – see here) and a bottle for the weekend!
