June 20th Accident on 87th Street in Bay Ridge

Around 11:40 am on Thursday, June 20th there was an accident on 87th Street that involved two vehicles. (See here)

Michael Sibley’s photo

The white sedan (above) was driven by a woman. Her car was hit by a black SUV. She was brought to the hospital. Bay Ridge residents shared that the driver of the SUV was arrested. (See photo)

The black SUV hit the garden brick wall at the corner house. (See more photos and videos here)

Bay Ridge residents are tired of the speeding in the area and nothing being done about it.

Bay Ridge residents want more speed bumps to stop the hazardous driving. Bay Ridge residents want NY state politicians to elevate the charges for these types of crimes, but Senator Andrew Gounardes is more interested in speed cameras.

Two days after the accident, not one politician mentioned this accident. Our social media politicians are too busy making graphics (See here) or posting pictures dancing by themselves. (Here)

Tribute to a Bay Ridge Mother & Sister Killed in Hit-And-Run 30 Years Ago

In June 1994, 43-year-old Donna Blanchard and her 4-year-old daughter, Michele were killed in a hit-and-run on the corner of 92nd Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway. They were returning home after purchasing groceries.

Donna Blanchard’s sons are in the rap group, Lordz of Brooklyn. Three decades ago, they wrote the song Mama’s Boy. This year, DJ Stress made a remix of Mama’s Boy and Blanchard’s sons, Michael, Andrew and Adam created this video as a tribute to their mother and sister:

The driver of the white box truck that killed Donna and Michelle Blanchard was never caught. (Info)

In 2014, Blanchard’s son, Michael McLeer and another artist painted the beautiful mural of his Mom and sister on Ft. Hamilton Parkway.

In Bay Ridge, Michael McLeer (aka Kaves) is known for his restaurant, The Brooklyn Firefly on 3rd Avenue and 70th Street. His art is also known to our community:

Kings Plaza Closed Because The Power Went Out

Update: Kings Plaza reopened.

The power went out at Kings Plaza Mall, so they had to close.

When something like that happens, the power companies should be fined. They receive a lot of money so they should be able to maintain the power over the area they are covering.

The Summer just began!

They teens were at the Queens beach with parents and went missing. The riptide at Riis Park is strong.

NYC Divers searched the water yesterday and are searching today as well. (Story)

Rally Against the Dispensary – Pilo Arts Former Location in Bay Ridge – June 24, 2024

I saw this notice about a rally against the legal cannabis shop that applied to open at Pilo Arts location.

If NYS politicians, like Andrew Gounardes checked on the details of dispensaries being placed in communities, we would not be here now.

For two years, Bay Ridge has seen these illegal shops get robbed because they are cash only businesses. They can not accept credit cards.

Stand up Bay Ridge!

CB 10 is Unfavorable Towards The City of Yes

Tonight, Community Board 10 shared their extensive review of the City of Yes. They didn’t take this issue lightly.

Tonight’s meeting was held in a very small room that could hold only 50 people – Why?

Community Board 10 has been rezoned before. When there was a rezoning, it was done carefully to make things work in the community. Some parts of NYC have not had any rezonings.

CB 10 found that the City of Yes will make the property values even higher and there will be adverse affects on the neighborhood. If they want the City of Yes to have affordability there needs to be a carve out for affordability. More density will not make the neighborhood less expensive. And property taxes will increase as well.

The City of Yes does not account for problems with electricity, sewers or overcrowded schools in Community Board 10. Illegal conversions in Dyker Heights are still an issue.

In July, there will be a hearing and then NYC Council will vote on it.

CB 10 Voted Against Cannalicious Dispensary

Cannalicious LLC put in an application for a dispensary at 8514 3rd Avenue. This is where Rose Glass Works used to be.

The applicant for this location did not have a lease.

The applicant did not submit a floor plan, which makes the application incomplete.

CB 10 voted against this dispensary because this location has the Masjid Al Rahman Mosque near it at 333 – 86th Street.

This location also has many schools around it including: Home Sweet Home Day Care, DGK, Bay Ridge Catholic, Adelphi, Stepping Stones, PS 185 and Fort Hamilton High School.

CB 10 Voted Against the Dispensary at Pilo Arts

Tonight Community Board 10 voted against a dispensary at the former Pilo Arts location.

RMan Holding has tried opening a dispensary in four other locations (two in our area – one was denied because it was near a school and one was approved on 86th Street).

This location on 3rd Avenue has many schools around it with around 8000 students in public and private schools including: Home Sweet Home Day Care, DGK, Bay Ridge Catholic, Adelphi, Stepping Stones, PS 185 and Fort Hamilton High School.

A huge dispensary would have a negative impact on that street (remember Pilo Arts is three store fronts)

Partial Power Outage on 91st Street in Bay Ridge

Forty-three Con Edison customers have partial or no power on 91st Street below 3rd Avenue. (See Con Edison’s map)

Con Edison expects to restore power by 9:30 pm tonight (they always give that time, but usually solve the problem quicker).

Some residents have partial power and can still access FIOS.
