Councilwoman Susan Zhuang Was Arrested Outside 86th Street Shelter Location

Yesterday morning, Councilwoman Susan Zhuang was arrested outside 2501 – 86th Street, the homeless shelter location. Zhuang has been fighting for her community at this location for a long time.

Construction work started at the 86th Street shelter location at 5:00 am. Susan Zhuang told the police that the developers do not have permits. The police said they had the mayor’s permission.

Councilwoman Zhuang shared this video:

See this video of the community and police with the barriers:

When I first saw the picture, I didn’t believe it was the councilwoman. The police took Zhuang away in handcuffs.

Then I saw the Daily News story and they wrote Susan was expected to be charged with assault. Update: The Brooklyn Paper wrote that Zhuang was charged with assault in the second and third degrees, resisting arrest, and obstructing government administration.  See article: https://www.brooklynpaper.com/zhuang-arrested-protest-gravesend-shelter/

The newspapers didn’t explain how the biting happened. And that’s important because Susan Zhuang likes the NYPD, so she wouldn’t purposely bite a police officer.

Bill Colton shared this:

Councilwoman Susan Zhuang has always been for her community.

When these developers attempted to start construction on Chinese New Year, Councilwoman Zhuang was alerted. Susan left her family on the holiday and went to handle the situation at the shelter location. That’s a woman who is dedicated to her community.

When Susan was released, she went back to 86th Street because she knew the people spent the day protesting and waiting for her!

PS 185’s Afterschool Program Was Cut – Parents Will Be Forced to Pay $3,300 for Afterschool

The afterschool program at PS 185 in Bay Ridge was free last year.

This year, parents will be forced to pay $3,300 for their child to attend the afterschool program.

You may be thinking to yourself: Well $3,300.00 isn’t bad for afterschool all year.

For some families, $3,300.00 is too high because they are just making ends meet, so their child will be going home to an empty apartment.

If a family has two children, the afterschool cost is $6,600.00

In February, Kathy Hochul announced that she was adding $17.7 million dollars more to the New Streamlined LEAPS Initiative for afterschool programs, which had $100,000,000. (Info)

How did families at PS 185 get left out of that 117 million dollars?

When that money didn’t come through, why didn’t Senator Andrew Gounardes stand up for this community?

Senator Gounardes didn’t communicate with our community and tell us that this school’s afterschool program was cut.

How many other schools in Bay Ridge lost their afterschool program?

Why didn’t Councilman Justin Brannan mention the change to PS 185’s afterschool program?

In other areas, NYC Council members went and got the money to fund their afterschool programs, like Council member Joann Ariola did:

Afterschool programs for children are essential because most parents are working and need childcare. Parents may have chosen this school because it had a free afterschool program.

Our community should not be paying high property taxes when afterschool programs in our area were cut and many families are being forced to pay for afterschool, while in other areas throughout the state, these programs remain free.

We have elected leaders who should be working to support this school and the families in our community!

Boom Heard This Moring in Brooklyn

Around 11:20 am this morning, residents in Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst heard a loud boom and thought they felt the aftermath of an earthquake shaking their home.

Update: Channel 1 Spectrum News reported about it in the afternoon and said residents in NY and NJ heard it. The news reporter said the sound could have come from a military aircraft going too fast because they haven’t found any other sources for the sound.

Update 2: Meteorologist Nick Pittman said the sound was caused by a meteor that burned up in the atmosphere!

Update 3: Channel 4 concurs with the meteor, but they don’t know if it caused the sound/shaking.

Alexa Aviles is Explaining The City of Yes Housing Opportunity on Wednesday, July 17th

Alexa Aviles represents parts of Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst in NYC Council after redistricting.

While Alexa Aviles supported the City of Yes, she pushed back on it because she wanted companies like Amazon not to be able to setup a delivery warehouse without applying for a special permit.

On Wednesday, July 17th from 6:30 – 7:30 pm, Aviles will have an online meeting to explain the City of Yes Housing Opportunity.

Councilman Justin Brannan hasn’t offered anything like this because he doesn’t communicate well with the community as a whole (just certain Facebook groups).
