Woman Assaulted at Knifepoint In Coney Island

Yesterday around 9:00 pm, a 46-year-old woman was assaulted at knifepoint on Surf Avenue and West 16th Street in Coney Island. (News) She lives under the boardwalk behind Maimonides Stadium in Coney Island. (Source)

One man assaulted her. His friend fought off her boyfriend, who had stepped away to purchase a coffee and then returned and tried to stop the rape. (Source) The woman told the NY Post that she thought the man was going to kill her. (Source)

Today, the two men were arrested and charged.

How horrible! Prayers for this woman!

Councilman Brannan represents Coney Island and he didn’t say anything. In the past, he has not told the community that a rape has happened.

Councilwoman Inna Vernikov from the next district wrote:

Brooklynites in Redhook Not Given Enough Notice About a Monday Night Zoom Meeting

Politicians and the EDC scheduled a Zoom Meeting for Monday, August 12th at 6:30 pm to answer questions about a project at Brooklyn Marine Terminal that started in June.

Senator Andrew Gounardes only announced the meeting on Friday, August 9th. (Here and here)

Senator Gounardes is supposed to represent the people, so if enough time wasn’t given, Gounardes should have spoken up for the people.

In March 2024, NYC announced a new wind project would take place at the Brooklyn Marine Terminal between 29th and 39th Street in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. (Source)

This is going to be the nation’s largest offshore Wind Port. (Source)

Why wouldn’t they take the time to hold a public meeting and share the information with the community that lives around this project?

In May, Governor Hochul said the state would back the project. (Source) At that point, Senator Andrew Gounardes should have held a Question and Answer session for residents.

The EDC is running this project. Senator Andrew Gounardes accepted a lot of money from the Tebele Family in 2022. (See chart below) In 2020, Charles Tebele was added to the EDC by Bill de Blasio. (Info).

The Tebele Family also funded the senator in the next district, 59 – Senator Kristen Gonzalez (shown on the map in red).

$65,000 was donated over two years – with more than half of that this year:

By mid-June, demolition began on Brooklyn Marine Terminal. (Source and see video below)

The residents shared that this is the first public meeting:

If someone went away for the weekend, they wouldn’t even know about this meeting! How is that enough notice for a meeting?

PortSide ED Carolina Salguero discussed the meeting:

This $861 million project is supposed to create 1,000 construction jobs and apprenticeships on the 73-acre site. NYC Council representative, Alexa Aviles doesn’t seem to have a lot of faith in the project. She is watching this project because she wants to see Sunset Park residents being hired. Aviles said, “Because it’s something that could slip by and we look back and see only a handful [of local jobs], and that would be a travesty.” (Source)

Update: On Monday, August 12th, the NYC Council Representative emailed:

If you are interested in attending the Monday night Zoom meeting at 6:30 pm, (Register here)

$35,000 Noise Camera Added to 3rd Avenue & Wakeman Place

Photo: Tim O.

A noise violation camera was added to 3rd Avenue and Wakeman Place in Bay Ridge. These cameras are $35,000 each and five are supposed to be installed in each borough by 2025. (Source)

This might be the camera that was used to be near Fort Hamilton High School.

NYC Council passed this legislation for the cameras – Justin Brannan was not a sponsor of the bill. Cars with modified mufflers or loud dirt bikes, that make loud sounds over 85 decibels, will receive an $800 ticket by mail to the registered owner. (Source)

If the have an altered muffler, they probably have a license plate that can’t be read by the cameras as well. CBS News shared that $100 million dollars is lost in NYC because of obscured license plates. (See here)

Senator Andrew Gounardes’ legislation never got out of Committee because he was too busy pushing Congestion Pricing. (Bill)

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection said that almost 50,000 noise complaints are filed every year. (Source)

Brannan Sees Art – We See a Mess That Should Be Painted Over

Councilman Justin Brannan admired the lyrics on the stickers being placed on property around Brooklyn. We think it looks horrible and should be painted over.

If the music was great, people would be singing it, not putting it on a sticker. Hear the song here.

Senator Iwen Chu is Making Nonsense Videos Instead of Giving People Information

I can’t believe that Senator Iwen Chu thinks making videos about her hair color is necessary.

The afterschool program at PS 177 was cut and Senator Chu’s did not tell the community! That’s what people want videos about – real information about their community!

Brooklyn, elect a leader who will communicate information with you and stand up when the funding for an afterschool program at a school has been removed! Many parents rely on that for tutoring and peace of mind afterschool.
