Where Did the NYS Funding for Afterschool Go?

When we heard that NYS funding was cut for afterschool, a political guy said, “Look around and you will see a politician announcing that he gave money from NY State to a group. Election season is here.”
Sure enough, the head of the NYS Senate, Mike Gianaris announced that he gave seventy million to religious schools for safety.

That money was awarded in May. (Source)
You don’t see Senator Andrew Gounardes or Senator Iwen Chu standing up for the lost afterschool money. Neither protested in Albany and neither attended the parent’s protest in Bay Ridge!

September 4, 2024Some Great News on Afterschool for PS 247

NYC Council Representative, Susan Zhuang was able to get some free afterschool restored for students at PS 247.
While she hasn’t been able to restore all of the seats, she is working on this.
We should see the politicians in our area following Councilwoman Zhuang’s lead. If each politician looked into funding one school, they would be able to restore afterschool for a lot of families in this area of Brooklyn.
I’m surprised Councilman Brannan hasn’t stepped in for PS 185 as it is his alma mater.

September 3, 2024Serafin Photography on 77th Street in Bay Ridge

I didn’t know there was a photography studio on 77th Street, off 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge. Serafin Photography did photos for Fort Hamilton High School’s Football Team. (See video here) The blue light and smoke machine is a nice touch.

They also have a back to school mini session deal:

And they do passport photos fast!

September 3, 2024Nice Gardening Frankie’s of Bay Ridge

I love the little garden outside of Frankie’s of Bay Ridge at 279 71st Street (off 3rd Avenue).

The little fence stops the dogs from entering the area and the plants are very nice outside of the pizzeria. (See menu) I love when businesses add plants outside of their place.

September 2, 2024Why Didn’t Vinland Park Open When Councilman Justin Brannan Said It Would?

In September 2021, Councilman Justin Brannan announced that Vineland Park at 95th Street and Shore Road would receive some much needed renovations and updates.

Covid set 3.4 million design back, but it seems to have fallen behind even more. Update: It’s November 2024 and the park didn’t open.

In September 2023, Brannan said the renovations would begin and Vinland Park would open in the Summer.

In August 2024, Justin Brannan said Vineland Park would open in early September. Summer ended in September 2024 and the park didn’t open.

In October 2024, Councilman Brannan said the park will open in November.

From the outside, this park looks a lot better than other ones Brannan has recently done (very cookie-cutter – nothing special like other parks that were recently redesigned).

Someone needs to question how the millions of dollars put aside for parks in our area gets us kit sets and never looks like one of these cool parks??

Hopefully, it has regular-size swings for children. This Summer, the FDNY had to be called to a Bay Ridge Park because a teen got stuck while swinging in a baby swing.
Why would a politician not makes sure that swings were included in the design? When they don’t have children, they don’t care. All they care about is taking the photo in front of the place.

September 2, 202486 Flaming Grill Opened at 520 – 86th Street

86 Flaming Grill opened at 520 -86th Street next to Hana Sushi restaurant. This new deli is having a Grand Opening this weekend!
You can tell the owners are excited because they have balloons that spell Grand Opening in the front window! Congratulations to the owners! We are glad to see a nice business open on 86th Street.
Last September, a smoke shop that sold disposable vape opened in this location. (See here)
Before that, this storefront was empty for a bit. Years ago, this was the location of Gullo Associates Law Firm.

September 1, 2024Dead Body in the Water – Shore Road Bike Path

Around 9:00 am, a dead body was seen in the river next to Shore Road bike path in Bay Ridge. (Source)

RIP Ryan. He was only 27-years-old. He’s with God now.
Over the years, many bodies have been found in the water near the 69th Street Pier and Shore Road bike path.
Last week, a 15-year-old was removed from the water in Sunset Park. (See here) Three weeks ago a man’s body was removed from the water in Bay Ridge. (Info)
If a body is found in the water near Bay Ridge and is not immediately identified, the person is never mentioned again. The person’s name sometimes appears in Namus – the National Missing and Unidentified Person System. (See here)
*Ryan’s Mom told me this was her son. Ryan was someone. He had a family, who loved him and are missing him.
Prayers for Ryan’s family, who are without him this year and aren’t having a good holiday. God, please make your presence known to Ryan’s Mom, as you have to me.

September 1, 2024Parents Protested Afterschool Being Defunded at Some Schools in Bay Ridge – District 20

Photos: Christopher Leon Johnson
Ken Li, a parent, organized the protest because he knows how important afterschool programs are for students and their families.
Parents were surprised that Senator Andrew Gounardes did not tell the community in June, when he knew!

District 20 CEC Members attended and spoke at the protest because they want elected leaders to work together and get the funding restored for the children.

Assemblyman Bill Colton came to Bay Ridge to show support to the parents and the CEC. His speech was excellent. Colton said that there was more funding for afterschool this year and he is working to find out where the money went.
Council Representative Susan Zhuang said she has been trying to get answers because resources and money for students can not be cut. Many immigrant families need the afterschool programs.

Ying Tan said that NYS Assemblymembers should sue because students don’t have enough resources and money is being put towards the migrants.

Ying Tan looked up how the NYS Senate spent money and Ying Tan was correct NYS funding for asylum seekers has increased dramatically. Senator Andrew Gounardes should have shared this information, but he fails to communicate with Bay Ridge!

The parents marched from PS 185 to the District Office and then to PS 104 on 91st Street and 5th Avenue.

District 20 is lucky to have so many parents, who protested for NYS funding for afterschool on a busy weekend!
