Brannan Befuddled – Homeless Shelter Spending

Councilman Justin Brannan was featured in the NY Post article about the massive salaries and spending at homeless shelters in NYC. It took Brannan UNTIL NOW to recommend that the shelters need a compliance office – years after this spending started. (See story here)

Below Ridge Blvd Was Saved From the City of Yes

Councilman Justin Brannan excluded homes West of Ridge Blvd and Southwest from Marine Avenue in Bay Ridge from the City of Yes. (Shown in pink on the map below)

That includes Justin’s home of course. #Typical Justin Brannan.

City and State’s article says Brannan was the only politician in Southern Brooklyn and one of the few outer borough politicians who supported the City of Yes. (See article)

Justin Brannan knows he is a lousy councilman. He is also a cowardly man. He begins speaking at 21:40 on this video and says, “We landed at a decent place on the City of Yes thanks mostly to your feedback so have a great holiday.”

At this point in the meeting, Josephine Beckman, the manager of Community Board 10 should have shared the truth about what happened with the City of Yes. But she sat there and clapped.

From Video 22:27 (See here)

And smiled.

From Video 22:46 – see here

Half of the community was left out and no one on Community Board 10 said the truth at the meeting. Are they that callous?

Josephine and the CB 10 members that knew should resign! We can see they no longer represent this community.

It’s sad that our neighbors on Community Board 10 didn’t fight for the community of Bay Ridge. They were only fighting for their block not to be included.

Regular people in the community – please think about running for the city council office because we need a real representative that can advocate for the whole community, not just themselves.

NYC Retirees Won In the Court of Appeals Today

A huge victory in court for all NYC Retirees. The Court of Appeals said NYC can not push retirees on Medicare Advantage. Marianne Pizzitola (the woman in the black and white coat) relentlessly fought for the NYC retirees.

And those politicians who claim that they are pro union – they weren’t supporting the retirees. As you know Bay Ridge residents had to get Justin Brannan on board. Senator Andrew Gounardes never spoke out for the NYC retirees.

Bennett Took Over Kitty Kiernan’s in Bay Ridge

Update; March 22, 2025 : Kitty Kiernan’s is having a soft opening:

At tonight’s Community Board 10 Meeting, they announced that John Bennett, owner of Indigo Murphy’s Bar at 7102 Fort Hamilton Pkwy took over Kitty Kiernan’s Bar at 9715 3rd Avenue. Bennett had applied for a new liquor license.

Bennett used to own Bally Bunion years ago and he and his staff were great neighbors.

You can tell Kitty Kiernan’s is revived with new blood because they have a lot of new events, like this one tonight:

(See video of this event – it looks great)

I imagine James Keenaghan would be pleased that another Irishman is running Kitty’s now. James’ family said goodbye here.

Good luck on your new venture, John Bennett!

Update: Kitty Kiernan’s is closed for renovations. I heard it is becoming a sports bar (but don’t worry because Open Mic is coming back soon).

On March 11th, Kitty Kiernan’s shared this:

Andrew Gounardes Claimed He Wanted the LICH Bill for Hospitals, But He Failed to Sponsor It!

Governor Kathy Hochul vetoed the LICH Act – Senate bill 8843, which would have provided better state oversight before a hospital closure. (See bill)

It’s three days later and Senator Andrew Gounardes didn’t say anything about Hochul vetoing the LICH Act.

Other legislatures were very vocal about Hochul’s veto.

Governor Hochul gave this reason for vetoing the bill, but on social media people are pointing to hospital lobbyists:

Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon challenges the hospital lobbyists claims.

Five days ago, Andrew Gounardes wrote on Twitter about the bill.

Gounardes had since the Spring to sign onto the bill. Why didn’t he?

Almost every senator voted for this bill.

Something is not right here. Why didn’t Andrew Gounardes sponsor this bill?

Help us figure out why Andrew Gounardes did not sponsor this legislation.

Bay Ridge Woman Hurt – 83rd Street & 6th Ave.

A Bay Ridge woman was hit by a white car on the corner of 83rd Street and 6th Avenue on December 9th around 6:05 pm.

After hitting her, the car continued to push/drag the Ridgite, as it made a U-turn. The video is horrible to watch. Thank God she is alive!

The Ridgites ankle bone was broke. She had to have surgery and she is receiving physical therapy to help her walk again.

They are looking for the white sedan.

Another Cannabis Dispensary is Trying to Open in Bay Ridge

Tonight Community Board 10 held a meeting. They talked about a new cannabis dispensary application for High Dankery at 7815 – 3rd Avenue.

An illegal cannabis shop operated there. Community Board 10 said the new owner was not involved in the old shop. Guards will be present at the new shop (they have to be because these cannabis shops are all cash businesses still – credit cards can’t be used there)

Community Board 10 members did not like that this new dispensary location was next to Tutor Time, a daycare/preschool. Cannabis dispensaries are not put near schools when they occupy the whole building. Tutor Time only occupies the second floor of the building, so this location can be approved.

Another reason people do not want more cannabis shops in the area is because there is no way for the NYPD to test if a driver is high on cannabis, like they can test someone who is drunk with a breathalyzer.

A difference between this application and the application for the cannabis dispensary at Pilo Arts is that this owner attended the meeting tonight.

The new owner was professional and said that his customers will not linger outside of the store or smoke outside the shop. He explained that he has been waiting a few years for his application to be approved (the Office of Cannabis Management was not run well.) Finally, he listened to Community Board 10’s concerns and replied to them.

Bay Ridge residents have not seen a legal dispensary operate here yet. Maybe when Kaya Bliss opens, we will be surprised by a quiet and professional business. (Info)

CB 10 Members knows the community is not keen on having more cannabis dispensaries in the neighborhood, but they also realized that the Office of Cannabis Management can just overide their vote. Many voted against the dispensary tonight.

Santa Will Be at St. Pats on 12/17 & Fireworks!

The St. Patrick’s Christmas Spectacular is Tuesday, December 17th.

There is a concert at St. Patrick Academy on 4th Avenue and 97tj Street at 6:30 pm. Then everyone goes outside at 7:00 pm to see Santa come down 4th Avenue (it’s magical – this is an event you don’t want to miss – even if it is cold).

At 7:00 pm there are fireworks. This only lasts like 5 minutes so it’s not terrible. The fireworks really add to the magic (you have to see it – it’s amazing).
