Reusable Grocery Store Bags

Lee loves caring for the earth and was very excited when the Three Kings left him the very trendy Rume Bags to go grocery shopping. This is not a paid advertisement, just my own thoughts on the bags. The bags come in many bright colors, but I thought black and white would be great for a guy. They are polyester and water resistant.

First, I love the Rume because they are huge and can hold a lot of items (up to 50 lbs). They actually hold what three regular plastic grocery bags can hold. They are very spacious and don’t fall over easily like plastic bags. I love that they can be folded up nicely and the attached velcro keeps them closed and grouped together.

This week, Lee went to Pathmark and the cashier gave him 8 cents back on his groceries. He was excited to talk to her about his new environmentally friendly bags. I asked Lee if he liked the bags look and he said, “They are huge bags which look good.”

Sweet Day of a Brooklyn Teacher

All the classes in my school are doing community service projects each month. My class wanted to clean litter from the street/parks in Brooklyn, but it’s chilly and I wanted an indoor activity!

So I asked if anyone had a family member in the military. One of my students had a brother in the army in Iraq. So we’ve adopted him and plan to send his troop a package of goodies for Valentine’s Day. My students busily put together banners, cards and wrote an original song! So much excitement from a group of sixth graders who want to make a great package to let the troops know we appreciate them! 

Teaching….some days it can be so sweet.

What if I do make it to heaven? Then what?

So let’s say that I live a good life and when I die, I am allowed to enter heaven. We’re all suppose to want to be in heaven, right?

But now that I am thinking of it, when we get to heaven, it’s not like God is going to let us lie around and relax in paradise. God doesn’t strike me as someone who is interested in people laying around and relaxing all day. So when I get to heaven, do you think I will have to work?

New Years Resolution

This summer, I started to read the Bible. I didn’t finish, but I read a lot of the Old Testement. This New Year, I am following Angie’s lead and I am reading the Bible chronilogically.  It’s so cool! I had no idea that God used the symbol of a rainbow to symbolize the covenant He had with Noah.

I have just read a few days and The Book of Job has really caught my attention. I mean what an aspiring story of faith.

Besides the Bible, I am trying to cut back on coffee by drinking green and white tea. I can’t believe how delicious tea is. The first time I had tea, I was 23 years old and I was with my then boyfriend in Ireland.  He took me to Ireland for my college graduation. We went to see his aunts and uncles and they served us bologna sandwiches with mayo and tea. I wasn’t sure what to do as I didn’t like bologna or tea. Yet, I wanted to be polite and I wanted them to like me. So I ate the bologna on white bread (not toasted) and mayo (not even mustard).  It was disgusting. I tried to wash it down with tea and I was super grossed out.

But now I love tea…..or at least Lipton White Tea with Pomegranate & Blueberry (OMG so good). Grab a box at the store and enjoy it – it’s amazing!

2009 A Year of Hope & Happiness!

Happy New Year!  What did you do for New Year’s Eve?

I had a fantastic day with the best friends & family that a woman could have. All day long, people I love came by and brought exactly what I needed for our celebration. I forgot to buy bread for the spinach dip. Spinach dip without the bread is absolutely useless. Just as I was setting it on the side and kicking myself for not picking up bread, a friend walks in with three different types of bread. I got so excited I was jumping!

Another friend brought me an automatic bottle opener. Of course I love gadgets, but I can’t open a bottle of wine or champagne properly. But now I can with the coolest automatic bottle opener.

My dog had a problem and needed to visit the vet this week. I’ve added apples and carrots to her diet to help with digestion. Today, I ran out of apples and I meant to take a walk to the store and get more. A friend walked in with apples for me not even knowing that they were needed.

The Lord gives us what we need. And I am so grateful for the wonderful people that fill my life with love and friendship.

What to do on New Years Eve in NYC

New Year’s Eve is big in NYC because of the ball falling in Times Square at 12:00 am from the the top of One Times Square. You can best see it from Broadway between 45th and 50th Streest and on Seventh Avenue as well. Many people look for alternatives to standing in the cold in Times Square.

I have some tips because I’ve stood in the bitter cold one night and it wasn’t worth it.

1) Make plans to have dinner at one of these restaurants: Renaissance New York or the DoubleTree Guest Suites because you can see the ball from them. 

 2) Head to the Hotel Rivington because they have great parties and it is gorgeous. One year I bought tickets online for their event.

3) Buy tickets for clubs across the city here. 

4) Head to Brooklyn and walk anywhere from 75th to 95th on 3rd Ave – there are always great bars in Bay Ridge

Christmas was wonderful & so were the after Christmas Sales

Christmas was great. Such a sweet and relaxing day enjoying time with those I love.

After Christmas sales – AMAZING. I got the Willow Tree Creche. It’s beautiful!

Giving Back in the New Year

Jessica Knows is having a fantastic giveaway for $300 ($150 for you and $150 for a food pantry of your choice).

I loved to win this giveaway particularly because I would love to get some food for The Reaching Out Community Center, a Brooklyn food pantry. I should have done this already, but like many things, it gets left on my list of things to.

So if I win, I’m going to use the whole prize to get food and some pet food too for the food pantry. I have a sixth grade class who I would love to help me shop and deliver the food to the food pantry.

Christmas Music fills this Brooklyn Street

Sometime in January or February last year, CVS or Rite Aid had a 90% off sale for Christmas. I purchased this Christmas music and light machine.  You plug your lights in this box and they dance to the beat of 20 different songs. This morning around 10:00 am, I ran outside and plugged it in so my neighbors could wake to some great Christmas music.

It’s Christmas – be bold and outrageous! Go crazy and have fun.

Christmas evolves as we get older

As a child, I did the Christmas countdown every year. I loved Christmas and everything about the holiday. It was magical and exciting. I loved being around family and celebrating.

In my 20’s, I would make some magic around the holiday by doing dynamic light displays. It’s very popular to decorate your home with thousands of lights.  I loved decorating, but I lost my love for the holiday itself.

I know I’m suppose to be thrilled that December 25th is Christ’s birthday, but I just feel like the day and season have so many things tagged to it other than the Lord. And frankly, my years are happening very fast so Christmas feels like it is every four months.  So in an effort to bring back the real meaning of Christmas, we are changing it up a bit.

It’s been more spiritual and devoted to Our Savior. Lee and I made a Jesse Tree – I have pics to post soon. I loved the Jesse Tree as a kid and wanted to recapture that feeling. Although that feeling didn’t come back, a new one full of Scripture sharing came in its place. If you haven’t prayed with you man, go grab the Bible and read it together – it’s revitalizing.

Also, I am almost done memorizing Psalm 139. Angie posted a memorization chart and although I have never memorized scripture before, I wanted to try.

My heart is full of love for our God, my Lee and our life.  As we finished tiling the floor today, I realized that the magic of Christmas isn’t in the air. It’s in my heart and my home all of the time.

Yes, my house is still decorated and yes we are still celebrating. But Lee has to work Christmas and I need some time to just relax and breathe.  I’m not unhappy that Lee has to work….not even a little…. he always has every other holiday off. Some people may not be happy that we aren’t traveling all to visit them on Christmas Day, but we can visit in January, February or March.  And they can visit my newly tiled kitchen floor when they are up for a ride.
