We have had a lot of excitement since this little boy came to live with us. We’re sewing him a costume for Halloween today so I gotta go! Nothing will replace my old dog, but it’s nice to have this dog’s energy in our home.

When I was in 7th grade, the original Footloose came out. What a magical movie! It was the first movie that I saw in the movie theater with my friends (instead of family). When it came out on VHS tape, I bought it and watched it over and over!
Who didn’t love Kevin Bacon? Ren taught Even the boys in my class loved him and tried to reproduce his moves.
Who could forget how Ren taught sweet Willard to dance!

The new movie is coming out. It could never match the old. But I bet country line dancing becomes popular this Fall. I hope my students get to experience the same magic that the movie had for us many years ago.

October 3, 2011In Sync
This weekend was amazing, productive and fun. I want all weekends to be like this weekend!
On Friday we had off for the Jewish holidays. I was so productive. The church is having a rummage sale so I cleaned out the stuff we had in storage and put a lot aside to donate. I kept only the things that I REALLY LOVED. My storage went from being packed down to 3/4 empty. Yes, it was a real productive day and now there will be a lot of great stuff for the rummage sale.
Saturday morning we drove out to Long Island really early in the morning. The weather was beautiful all day – no rain. We were there at 9:15 am. There was a great festival in the town and I wanted to be there. We ate mussels at this amazing seafood restaurant. On the way home we went shopping. Great relaxing day. As we drove off the exit for our house, it started to drizzle.
Sunday morning I woke up early and cleaned out my closet. It took me 3 hours, but they are super organized and that makes me happy! Life is In Sync.

September 26, 2011It isn’t always easy to see past the rain…
When it rains, people in Brooklyn usually complain and moan. Yet, I love the rain and the moments right after it stops raining. I love how everything grows and the world looks a little bit cleaner.
Sara died Saturday. She was a beautiful woman (two years my junior).
Everyone keeps saying that she’s at peace, has no more pain and that’s she’s with God. I know all of those things are true. Yet, her life ended too early and I’m tired of life not being fair for nice people.
And I’m just tired of death.
Seeing past the rain isn’t always easy.
RIP SARA.

In 1989, police office Mark MacPhail was a security guard at Burger King in Georgia. He responded to a man being assaulted in a parking lot nearby. Mark MacPhail was shot and died. Troy Davis was blamed for his murder. Nine eyewitnesses said he did it.
Over the years seven of the nine witnesses recanted their statements. That’s a lot.
Yesterday 9/21 at 10:53 pm, Troy Davis was given the lethal injection. His final words were:
” I’d like to address the MacPhail family. Let you know, despite the situation you are in, I’m not the one who personally killed your son, your father, your brother. I am innocent. The incident that happened that night is not my fault. I did not have a gun. All I can ask … is that you look deeper into this case so that you really can finally see the truth. I ask my family and friends to continue to fight this fight. For those about to take my life, God have mercy on your souls. And may God bless your souls.”
If I was the MacPhail family, I would be glad Davis was gone I guess. They have been waiting years for someone to pay for their father’s death.
But I can’t help but wonder what if Troy Davis was someone I knew? Would I have thought he received a fair trial and the rights that all Americans are entitled to?
RIP Troy.

So we are looking to get a puppy. I know many people will say to adopt a rescue dog.
We are looking for a special dog to fill the void of our old friend Reggie. Reggie died in July and if you know me IRL and didn’t know that it’s because it was very hard for me to talk about him without tears. If you have ever loved a really good dog for 13 years – you know what I mean. Reggie was a very animated dog and he filled our home with a lot of excitement.
A rescue dog often comes with baggage and we aren’t sure we can trust a rescue with our other dog or with children. There are many cute rescue pups out there, but no dachshund puppies.
We contacted all the dachshund breeders in NYC and NJ. Going with a breeder is better than a puppy mill because that just encourages puppy mill owners. No one has this type of dachshund right now – they do have the short haired, the dapple and the long red haired wild boar doxies (like our Trallie, Reggie’s daughter)
I found the dog classifieds online. There are two super cute puppies. I responded to both with a junk e-mail account. I got two responses……both of them scams (see below)
How do I know they are scams? Besides the poor grammar, a google search for the e-mail address below shows they apparently have thousands of dogs that they want to help find homes for (they even claim to have horses).
Their e-mail tries to make them sound very concerned about the puppies and where they are going. A google search on dog scams shows that this scam has been going on for years. There are also delivery fees for the dog and that’s how they scam people by collecting those fees before a dog is exchanged. Do they really think people want to buy a dog they haven’t interacted with?

I was very excited to start this school year. AND THEN SOMETHING HAPPENED AND I WASN’T (Vague because nasty people don’t deserve attention). I had lost hope in people.
And when I smiled today at my beautiful sixth grade students, it felt forced because I felt terrible and hopeless inside. I’ve never began a school year like this.
And tonight Niveen wrote to me. She is a student I met in my sixth grade homeroom seven years ago. She graduated high school and thought of me. And Niveen has no idea what her note meant to me or how much I needed it at this moment.
And tonight I am just grateful…..to her and to God for sending me a very powerful sign…..it all matters – ALL OF IT!
And tomorrow, I will be back to myself and smile for real because in my classroom sits many more Niveens.
Edit: I hadn’t told Lee what had happened because I don’t want to pollute our home. My house has such an amazing positive energy in it that I don’t want to lose that.
Tonight before Lee went to work he left me a surprise because I guess he could sense I haven’t been myself. We have been together so many years and he always reminds me of how important I am to him.
When I saw the surprise, I said – Thank you Goddddddd….yes with that many D’s….Leon is always a reminder of God’s Love. I hope everyone who reads this has someone in their life like Leon.

Bloomberg appointed Dennis Walcott to do improve education. I think Walcott can do it. But does he?
Everyone wants to be an expert and say what education is and what’s going to make it better. No one needs experts or data to tell us the answer to this.
Schools need teachers who believe in students.
