Is Industry City Just for Transient Businesses?

Industry City got hit hard today when Makerbot announced that they were moving production to China.  Just last Summer (39 weeks ago), Makerbot announced the opening of their huge futuristic factory in Industry City. Optimists cheered over the jobs that were created.

Why? Because it’s cheaper to manufacture almost anything in China (link). There also seems to have been a problem with some of the printers.

Last April (2015) Makerbot laid off 100 workers, then in October 2015, they laid off another 20% of their factory workers (source). Now with the closing of the factory, more people will be laid off.

Industry City may just be a temporary stop for startups to see if they can make it in the market without having to afford NYC rents. Brooklyn shouldn’t be investing tax money into Industry City while it is

The Gap announced it will be going into Industry City, but the Gap isn’t a big deal because it’s all over the place. The initials GAP on clothes isn’t flattering.

Five Borough Bike Tour is on May 1st, Greek Orthodox Easter

The Staten Island-bound lower level of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge will be closed from 12:01 a.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday, May 1 for the annual TD Five Boro Bike Tour. The upper level of the bridge will remain open in both directions throughout the event.

Nina Chen – Brooklyn – Missing Person – FOUND – THANK GOODNESS

I woke up to the great news (4/29) – Nina Chen has been found! I bet she doesn’t realize how many people missed her!!   Several people asked what happened to her – that’s not important….what’s important is that she is home with her family.  

Thank God!

Nina Chen has been missing since Friday,  4/22.   It finally appeared in the papers on April 27th  The Home Reporter, another local paper covered the story on April 28th. Why aren’t more papers and news stations carrying this story and Nina’s picture? I wonder if her parents reported it to the Missing and Exploited Children organization – here

Pipin’s Popup Opens in Bay Ridge

Pipin’s Pub on the corner of 97th Street and 3rd Avenue became Pipin’s Pop Up (more info: here). We didn’t go right away because the owner said that burgers weren’t going to be served for awhile. They needed time to set up. So we waited awhile because Lee loves their burgers (the Pipin’s Burger is above plus a lot of ketchup for Lee).

Prom Dresses are Being Collected in Bay Ridge until May 5th

Donate your daughter’s dress from last year or maybe donate your old cocktail dresses and purses that have been accumulating in your closet.  This could really help out a young woman who just wants to have a great night and memories with friends.

Friends and Surgeries

My friend had an operation this week. While he was being operated on, everyone was so tense, but I knew he would be alright because God was taking care of him. The operation was mostly performed by a robot so of  I had 10,000 questions for him while he was in recover.

Twenty minutes ago,  my friend went to the emergency room because of complications.

I feel sad and stressed this time and I don’t know why. If you are the praying type, please send out a prayer for my friend. It’s gonna be a long night.

Babies and Books – Free Mommy and Me Event Each Week at the Fort Hamilton Library, Bay Ridge

Fort Hamilton Library has a  free storytime called Babies & Books for 0-18 months children every Wednesday at 10:30 AM

and Toddler Time for 18-36 months at 11:30 AM too.

Officer Peter Liang is Being Used as a Scapegoat

First, I mean no disrespect to Akai Gurley’s family as I am sure going through this process hasn’t allowed them any time to heal.

Peter Liang is a 28 year old police officer who had just a year and a half experience. Liang fired his gun in a dark stairway and the bullet ricocheted and killed Akai Gurley. Liang said he heard a sound to his left, he was startled and his gun went off (source).  He never intended to kill Akai Gurley and this is not a racial incident.

This was an accident.

An unarmed man is dead and no one wants to hear it was an accident. Akai’s family and friends want Liang behind bars.

But Peter Liang can’t be the scapegoal for an existing problem. There have been many victims of police brutality, but that simply isn’t the case here. Almost two Summers ago, we watch Eric Garner lose his life to the NYPD/

One of the things that really bothers me if that Officer Liang is received such little support from the NYPD Union. We watched the death of Eric Garner on YouTube almost two Summers ago and NYPD Union President Pat Lynch was all over the news defending Panteleo (Panteleo history shows he had a problem in his job before), yet Pat Lynch is barely heard from in Liang’s case. After Liang’s conviction, Lynch spoke out a little, but he  should have been all over this defending Liang.  I have never seen the NYPD union back away from one of their own like they have in this case.

I’m glad to see the Asian community standing up. Peter Liang is being used as a scapegoat for the history of police brutality that has been allowed to exist in NYC. They shouldn’t have to, but they know they have to do whatever they can to help Officer Liang.  Free Peter Liang FB Page.

We heard about the problem with one of the jurors on Peter Liang’s case. Juror Number 9, Michael Vargas wrote both positively and negatively about the police on his Facebook page.  But  he lied when he was selected for the jury. When asked if  anyone in his family has been accused of a crime,  Vargas’ failed to disclose that his father served 7 years in jail for manslaughter. There is a reason this question was asked!  The judge said that the manslaughter conviction sticks. I believe that it should have been declared a mistrial as an error was made in the proceeding and Liang should have been given a new trial. (See story here)

Brooklyn District Attorney, Kenneth Thompson recommended Liang serve no prison time, but this coming week the judge will decide Office Liang’s fate. I feel our legal system has failed Officer Liang.
