Bladesmithing for Kids in Brooklyn – Amazing Teacher!
If your son or daughter is a fan of Forged in Fire, then they probably wanted to learn to move metal and be a bladesmith. Fortunately for Brooklyn, Theo Nazz teaches classes in Red Hook! Theo is a Forged in Fire Champion!
Lee and I took class with him in the Spring and it was awesome. Theo has students who are as young as 12 years old and we saw they made impressive blades. As you know I have been teaching 20+ years, so I know what good teaching like. Theo is a natural teacher and amazing. He explains everything step-by-step and he has a great sense of humor so classes are really enjoyable! My knife is above. :)
You can read about our experience with Theo here and you can reach Theo on his website here. I’m not connected to him or anything, just someone who loved how well he taught and his class was well worth our time.
Of course Theo teaches adults as well (but this is part of my activities for Kids in NYC set).

June 18, 2017Bay Ridge Residents are Being Told to Put Their Garbage In Front of This Woman’s Home
First a huge apology goes out to Margaret McLaughlin in Bay Ridge. The City of NY told Margaret’s neighbors who live on a private street to put their garbage outside of Margaret’s home.
Margaret obviously likes her neighbors as she appeared with them on the news segment. But that’s just soooooooooooo wrong for the city to tell people to put all of their garbage outside of Margaret’s home.
Community Board 10 talked about the issue in April. (see page 40)
AND IT’S JUNE AND IT’S STILL NOT RESOLVED??
There are four streets in Bay Ridge that are affected by this:
Someone needs to do some problem solving and help these residents.

June 17, 2017Marty Golden Didn’t Want Us to Know About 408 77th Street
Last February, Marty Golden held a town hall meeting about substance abuse. He brought some speakers to talk about the topic.
YET NO ONE MENTIONED 408 – 77TH Street
408 – 77th is the Outpatient Drug Program of the The Resource Training Center…….don’t quote me on this because maybe it’s more than that. This is what their site says:

June 16, 2017Pretzel Cake – Stores that Sell Pretzel Cake in Bay Ridge & Brooklyn
I grew up in Sunset Park and everyone in Sunset Park knew Olsen’s Bakery. Olsen’s was a Norwegian bakery and was very popular. They had a cake called a pretzel cake. My Dad loved that cake. He and I would bring it over to my grandmother’s house on Sundays.
The pretzel cake is a light, soft cake cut in half and filled with whipped cream or with custard. Some have chocolate, but the one at Olsen’s was custard cream with raspberry. It was not only delicious – it was beautiful!
Where can you get a pretzel cake in Bay Ridge or Brooklyn now?
1. Leske’s Bakery always has pretzel cakes. 7612 5th Avenue
2. Tasty Pastry made the pretzel cake below. Tasty Pastry is on 13th Avenue and 82nd Street
3. Rimini Bakery – 6822 Bay Parkway in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn
4. Elegante Pastry Shop 165 Avenue U (and West 7th) 718-373-7008

June 14, 2017Khader El-Yateem – Is He a Peacemaker?
Today the Kings County Blog ran a story about Reverend Khader El-Yateem. It’s a pretty involved situation that started some time in 2014 involving donations for the The Resource Training Center , a substance abuse, counseling and treatment center located in Bay Ridge at 408 77th Street.
The last line really stood out to me: “Both DePola and El-Yateem remain members of Community Board 10 but, according to DePola, have not spoken to each other since the incident.”
Khader El-Yateem is running his campaign on the fact that he is a peacemaker. Yet, he attends Community Board meetings with his neighbor, Donna Mae DePola and hasn’t spoken to her in years. That doesn’t sound like a peacemaker. It actually sounds like what the Irish do when they don’t want to communicate with anyone – they stop talking to each other. If Reverend Khader El-Yateem was a peacemaker, he would have reached out to DePola and resolved this situation by now.
Khader El-Yateem could easily clear up the issue with DePola. If he gave her the money, he could post the checks that he wrote for her organization and show that he transferred the money to her.
In 2014, El-Yateem called for a meeting to discuss the drug problem in Bay Ridge. It’s 2017, why haven’t we seen Khader El-Yateem call meetings this year or last year about the drug problem in Bay Ridge?
