Kids and Teen Makerspace in Bay Ridge – Tuesday, July 25th – FREE

If your child is under 10 years old and likes to make things,bring them to Kids Create at the Bay Ridge Library on Tuesday, July 25th at 2:30 – 4 pm. They have a lot of materials for kids to do crafts and it is free.

If you child is 10 years old and up and they like to make things, send them to the Teen DIY at the Bay Ridge Library ton July 25th at 4 pm. They have beads, yarn, hot glue guns, a button maker, duct tape, origami paper, and more, plus plenty of instruction books.

This happens every Tuesday at the Bay Ridge Library Bay Ridge Library 7223 Ridge Blvd. at 73rd St.

Khader El-Yateem’s Bitterness & The Lost Endorsement

This week, Justin Brannan received an endorsement from Public Advocate, Leticia James and Khader El-Yateem became bitter.

In an article in the Gothamist,  Reverend Khader El-Yateem lashed out at the “exclusive club of white men.”  Yet, El-Yateem was silent about Pam Harris withdrawing her endorsement for him.  

Was race or gender involved with Assemblywoman Pam Harris’ endorsement withdrawal or was the endorsement never made? I first saw the Assemblywoman’s endorsement mentioned on El-Yateem’s website, but that has since been removed. In an interview to the New Kings Democrats, El-Yateem mentioned the Assemblywoman’s  endorsement in question #18   In September 2016, the Muslim Democratic Club endorsed Pam Harris and I bet they thought she would return the favor when they had a candidate this time!  Soon after El-Yateem said Harris endorsed him, she came out and said she didn’t endorse a candidate, but planned to endorse Nancy Tong because she was a woman (see Tong’s endorsement here).

Further, at the end of June this year, Assemblywoman Harris honored twenty men in the community with awards and Khader El-Yateem was not one of her picks. See here   Other Arab-American men in the area were honored, so El-Yateem can’t say that’s the reason she didn’t choose him.

As far as “the club of white men” El-Yateem mentioned,  I am guessing El-Yateem is naming the man who brought him into Community Board 10, Vincent Gentile. The only way a person can become part of the team of 50 people who serve on the Community Board are if they are appointed by Gentile.  Gentile is very well liked because he is an excellent counsilman.  I’ve seen Gentile include Khader El-Yateem in other events as well so there is no reason for El-Yateem to be bitter.

El-Yateem’s quote at the end of the article shows that he wants to make the election about race. His failure to cinch Tish James’ endorsement and El-Yateem’s silence over losing Pam Harris’ endorsement (or never receiving it as the case may be) is no reason to go after “white men.”   Say the truth:   El-Yateem is pushing his own agenda in this election and not a lot of people support that.  El-Yateem supports BDS and the United States supports Israel because it is our ally. Most people don’t want their politicians using our resources for other countries as we have our own problems here. Yet, El-Yateem’s family lives in Palestine so he believes America should help Palestine. 

El-Yateem thinks it is alright to run his agenda in City Council because he sees Carlos Menchaca doing it. Menchaca’s community in Sunset Park has suffered because of this! Join the Sunset Park Community on Facebook and you will see how unhappy the community is with Menchaca.

Young Writers Workshop at the Bookstore in Bay Ridge

This summer, young writers ages 9-13 can learn fiction and poetry writing techniques in a fun,supportive environment AND become published authors!

This 4-part workshop is taught by Lisa Cappiello. It will take place July 24th – 27th  from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm. At the end of the workshop, each student will have one story and 2-4 poems that will be featured in The BookMark Shoppe’s Kids Collection that will be sold at The BookMark Shoppe and on Amazon.com!

The cost is $350 per student and it includes an author’s copy of the book.

Disclosure Isn’t Important to Kevin Peter Carroll

Kevin Peter Carroll is running to be councilman of Bay Ridge. Today he shared his endorsements on Twitter today. Yet he let some important information out. Robert Carroll is listed, yet Kevin doesn’t say that Robert is his cousin on the endorsement list.  That would be important for residents to know because we shouldn’t accept endorsements between family members.  There is a union listed on Carroll’s endorsement list. The union is for custodial engineers that Carroll’s father worked for. I went to the union website and  there is a Carroll on there as well. I have no idea if they are related, but because Kevin didn’t disclose that info about his cousin, it made me look.

Stephen Levin is listed on the endorsements. Kevin doesn’t mention that Levin is his boss. His Linkedin profile shows it though:

Of course Kevin’s political club, Brooklyn Democrats for Change has endorsed him. In prior elections that Club has endorsed candidates from Coney Island, rather than Bay Ridge.   The club also endorsed IDC member, Diane Savino. The IDC is a group of senators who were elected as Democrats, but vote with the Republicans. Most people wouldn’t know this if they didn’t look closely.

You will also notice that most of his endorsements don’t have anything to do with Bay Ridge. Although Kevin Peter Carroll endorsed Mark Treyger to be Bay Ridge district leader, Treyger didn’t endorse Kevin.  Kevin endorsed Pam Harris for Assembly, but Pam Harris didn’t endorse him either (more info).

Khader El-Yateem Why Hasn’t He Promoted Culture in Bay Ridge Before Now?

Tonight, Khader El-Yateem will have an artist at his table on 78th Street doing  henna tattoos during the Summer Stroll. Why hasn’t he as a the leader of a church in Bay Ridge promoted culture in our community before now?

El-Yateem is the pastor of the Salam Arabic Church which has never invited residents in to celebrate culture. Other churches in Bay Ridge have events all the time, but the Salem Arabic Church doesn’t.    

I don’t think El-Yateem feels it is his responsibility to do anything to promote culture in Bay Ridge.  He doesn’t seem to understand that community building doesn’t happen at a one day event held once a year with a few select people eating breakfast (it didn’t for our community: see: here). Nor does he seem to understand that an appreciation and admiration of culture happens when people have experienced culture positively. Some schools do it, but it needs to happen in the community.

Brooklyn artist, Alicia Degener – BayRidge Coasters – Great Gift

At Summer Stroll tonight on 80th and 3rd Avenue, Brooklyn artist, Alicia Degener will have some of her work including these beautiful Bay Ridge coaster. I’m thinking they would make a great gift for someone who loves Bay Ridge, the bridge or someone who has left Bay Ridge and could use a sweet reminder.

RIP Djamila Requieghmuda – Bay Ridge Resident

Djamila Requieghmuda, a 55 year old resident of Bay Ridge was found dead in the Bronx at a furniture restoration store where her ex-husband worked (see here) on Thursday, July 20th (see here). People in the building reported that they heard screaming and called the police. Djamila’s body was found with a blanket over it and she had trama to her head.  See more: here

Djamila was last seen near her home in Bay Ridge on Wednesday (see video). Her 23 year old daughter reported her mother missing on Wednesday and told police that her dad about prior incidents of violence and threats.  Djamila’s ex-husband had threatened to kill her (see here). In September 2016, he had broken three windows at her home and the police were called. (see here). At first he was a missing suspect, but cops discovered the following day that he hung himself in a closet. (see here). The news is now saying they don’t know if this is a murder/suicide or a double murder. The police are still investigating. 

As this situation wasn’t horrible enough, there are two younger siblings to the 23 year old daughter – one teenage son and a 14 year old daughter who just lost both their parents in 24 hours. The oldest daughter was recently accepted into medical school.
