Paint for Peace in Bay Ridge – October 7th

On Saturday, October 7th at 1:30 pm, Painting for Peace will take place at Kieran Hall in Saint Andrew’s. Norma (from Norma’s Craft Store on 3rd Avenue and 78th Street) will be showing you how to create a “masterpeace.” $4 Donation is requested to cover the supplies. All ages welcome.

On Saturday, October 7th at 10:00 am, there will be a mass at Saint Athanasius Church on Bay Parkway and 61st Street.  The parade goes on when it rains as well (see here)

The Columbus Day Parade will follow at Noon starting at 60th Street and 18th Avenue and ending on 84th Street and 18th Avenue.

Schools will line up on 62^nd  Street between 18^th  and 19^th Avenue.

If Columbus Day upsets you, then on October 9th, you can head up to the Anti-Columbus Day Tour at the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan.  Meet in the Main Hall at 3:30 pm and tickets will be provided for the tour.

These Fire Department station houses are collecting for Puerto Rico from 7 am – 9 pm every day. Needed at this time: diapers, baby food, batteries, first-aid supplies and feminine hygiene products ONLY.

Donations for the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico are being collected at: 8521 – 7th Avenue in Brooklyn

Saint Ephrem School is collecting for Mexico. Bring items to Saint Ephrem School  or  701 86th Street by Wednesday, September 27th

The Girl Scouts in Bay Ridge are also helping to collect items. This may be helpful for people in the 90’s, around 4th Avenue

If you want to volunteer, they need help sorting and boxing the donations: Just show up at 49th  Street and 4th  Ave. 10 am – 9 pm   every day to sort supplies, box and label.

The 68th Precinct is also taking donations for Puerto Rico

John Quaglione & Empty Suit Politics

Nicole Malliotakis & John Quaglione campaigned in a room with senior citizens. That is not news.

John Quaglione sent the picture (below) to the Brooklyn Eagle and it was published with an article with an author. There was no one at the Brooklyn Eagle who wanted to put their name on a fluff story.

This is the politics John Quaglione has become used it while working at the senator’s office. Press release politics is the reason nothing is getting done.

The writer didn’t know where to go with the article so he/she included: “The Bay Ridge Center serves hundreds of senior citizens, offering the members hot meals, social service referrals, day trips, exercise classes, and computer courses.”  

WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH JOHN QUAGLIONE? NOTHING.

The Eagle writer was too chicken to tell the politicians: “This is not a story.”

Bay Ridge Jewish Center Gets It Right

Justin Brannan shared this sign which is hanging on the Bay Ridge Jewish Center. I’ve noticed the Bay Ridge Jewish Center “getting it right” for years. This place has been “getting it right” for a long time and I thought it was because of  the synagogue’s leader, but she left a few months ago. 

Now it’s just a banner, but it’s words that include everyone and it’s the start of action. I wish all churches and houses of worship would join the Bay Ridge Jewish Center’s sentiment.

John Quaglione Does Not Have Education as an Important Issue

Wow, I didn’t realize this until today, but John Quaglione, a candidate for NYC Council does not have education as an issue.   How could anyone think of running in our area without having education as a focus?

John Quaglione is running to represent Bay Ridge. Yet, on Quaglione’s website, the issue page has five other issues that he feels are important.

The five issues Quaglione has on his site are: family health, public safety, transportation, quality of life and seniors.

John Quaglione’s wife is an Assistant Principal, so it’s strange that he isn’t advocating for education.  

Why is education not a leading issue for Quaglione?

• Quaglione is on the board of directors at Saint Anselm Catholic Academy. Saint Anselm has less than 300 students in PreK-8th grade.  The pre-k Program at St. Anselm is large and funded by Mayor deBlasio. That program has probably helped keep the school open. Yet, Quaglione takes swipes at the deBlasio regularly. Most of the Catholic schools in Bay Ridge (if not all) are being supported by deBlasio’s Pre-K program. Why hasn’t Quaglione thanked the Mayor? 
  

• Senator Marty Golden, who Quaglione has worked for most of his life, has supported vouchers and charter schools.  Maybe Quaglione doesn’t want us to know that he supports that too?  Golden even supported the co-location of charter schools in current public schools.
  

Our district is overcrowded and new public schools are needed.

Strangely, Marty Golden continues to introduce bills for private school funding by allowing tax breaks to rich donors, who are giving money to schools. Watch Senator Golden talk with these men and see how they discuss the “nuclear option” in this video (starts around 6:00)  Even a Republican blog called out Golden on this.

John Quaglione’s lack of support for public education shows he is out of touch with this district.  Failing to mention it as an issue for this community shows he doesn’t understand what parents in this community regard as important.
