Sirens Before 2 am in Bay Ridge

There were sirens – a lot of sirens, right before 2 am this morning.

Fourth Avenue Between 94th and 95th Street was covered with firetrucks. A subway situation was falsely reported.

Thankful that firemen rushed to the emergency…..glad it was a false alarm. How am I going to get back to sleep?

Man Arrested for Entering Catholic School in Dyker Heights

On Wednesday, November 8th, parents shared  photo of a man who was lingering outside of Saint Bernadette’s School (1313 83rd Street) and may have been photographing students. The following day, some parents at St. Ephrem believed they saw the same man.

“Yesterday, November 13th around  12:40 pm, the same man, Chan Shu  was arrested and charged with criminal trespassing after he was accused of being in the hallways of St. Bernadette School leading up to the cafeteria, which is in a separate building.”(source)  A teacher saw Chu and called the police (source)

Chu is a 43 year old Dyker Heights resident (source). He was arrested by the the 68th Precinct. (Info)  Chu was processed at Central Booking. The school was put on lockdown and the school was checked.

Now parents are questioning how he was able to enter the building. They are concerned that he will be released by the police soon and be back at the school.

MTA – Why Can’t a Sign Just Be a Sign?

Why does the MTA have to add all of that to the sign? Why can’t it just be an informative sign without the extra?

CookieGate – Senator Marty Golden and John Quaglione

Politicians can not be visiting polling sites other than their own on Election Day.

I have see Marty Golden at my polling site (the Fort Hamilton Senior Center) 9941 Fort Hamilton Pkwy,  on Election Day several times. Yet, Golden’s election site is Fort Hamilton High School – 8301 Shore Road.   Golden was  seen and photographed inside John Quaglione’s polling site this election.

Quaglione and Golden contend that it is okay for them to bring poll workers cookies at the polling site.  It is okay for them to give cookies to the workers, but they can’t be in any polling site but their own. Apparently, John Quaglione was seen inside a polling site in Dyker Heights giving out tins of butter cookies.  See here

Mallory wrote: The same thing happened in Council District 43, where candidate John Quaglione–accompanied by the current State Senator, Marty Golden, who Quaglione works for–was at various polling places not his own, giving out cookies to poll workers. According to Quaglione, gifts for poll workers are allowed, as long as they don’t exceed $20 in value.

However, this article makes it clear that being inside a polling place that is not your own–which Quaglione did both during the primary and the general election is against the rules. He and his supporters maintain that he and Golden hanging around inside polling places is A-OK, even as people complained it made them uncomfortable, as was reported by Kings County Politics (https://www.kingscountypolitics.com/bay-ridge-polls-grow-contentious-hotly-contested-election/)

Man Killed in Bay Ridge – Road Rage

Around 9:15 pm, an altercation happened on  65th Street and Third Avenue because of a prior incident at Costco.

Gavriel Mardaknayevy, 65 and his wife had been shopping at Costco on 2nd Avenue and 37th Street in Sunset Park. Gavriel Mardaknayevy saw their car was hit by a white construction company van. The Markdaknayevy’s got into their car quickly and followed the 2012 white van down Third Avenue into Bay Ridge. David Cruz was the 55-year-old van driver (picture here).

At the intersection of 65th Street and Third Avenue, Gavriael Mardaknayevy  got out of his vehicle and argued with Cruz (source). Mardaknayevy yelled “You hit me…..Hold on.” (source) Mardaknayevy walked in front of the van (source) to stop it from leaving the scene.(sourceCruz  accelerated in the van. The white van hit Madaknayevy and dragged his body for two blocks from 65th to 67th Street on Third Avenue  (as Mrs. Mardaknayevy  watched…..OMGG how awful.  RIP Gavriel Madaknayevy).  A dashcam captured the whole scene (video can  be seen here – the white van swerves away).

A good Samaritan, Michael Othman blocked the white van with his grey minivan. He got Cruz to get out of his van, grabbed him, threw him on the wall like a cop. Othman said to Cruz: “What did you do?”  “Don’t move. Are you crazy? You have a dead body under the van!” (source)  A Bay Ridge resident said they heard someone say, “We are not going to let you go, you hit someone.”  The police came handled Cruz. Othman consoled Mrs. Madaknayevy.

Gavriael Mardaknayevy was pinned under the car. The firefighters from Ladder 109 on 66th Street (and 3rd Avenue) ran to the scene and lifted the vehicle. Mr. Mardaknayevy was rushed to Lutheran Hospital in an ambulance, but he didn’t survive.  RIP   :( This is so sad. Mardaknayevy is from West Brighton.

Cruz is in police custody. Cruz was arrested and had a blood alcohol level of 0.109 percent four hours later, according to a criminal complaint. (source) The legal standard for drunken driving in New York is 0.08 percent. On Friday, November 10th, he was charged with second degree murder, drunk driving and reckless driving. (source) Cruz has a clean driving record and is a former marine.

Cruz is out on jail on $50K bail (source)

Story herehere and here  **GRAPHIC Pictures **  after the scene here, here  and here

RIP Gavriel Madaknayevy….this should never have happened. Prayers for Gavriael’s wife of five years and Gavriael’s 17 year old daughter.

Twenty-two year old resident, Joanna Mei set a fire in the third floor hallway of 6709 – 11th Avenue because garbage was piling up there. Mei used an accelerant to create the fire.  She tried to put the fire out, but wasn’t able to.

Suicide off 69th Street Pier in Bay Ridge

Update:  Luis Candell, the  54 year old driver and the Rav 4 have been recovered. God rest his soul. His body was found three days after he drove off the pier.  A 50 year old woman had filed a missing person report for Candall prior to the suicide (*prayers for her*). Story here

A man in a black 2010 Rav 4 (previously thought to be a Mercedes), drove off the 69th Street Pier at 1:00 am this morning.  A resident who was fishing on the pier said that the car swerved around all the obstacles and went into the water. He called the police and reported what he had seen. The Brooklyn Reporter stated that the car drifted towards the Verrazzano Bridge. (See here)  Neither the man or the car have been seen or recovered.

The car and driver were found today – 3 days later – 11/9.   See more here and here
