John Alexander Makes Bay Ridge Not Love Marty Golden!
I have no idea what Senator Golden did to the Brooklyn Eagle journalists, but this is the second time that I have seen the Brooklyn Eagle writers make Twitter go in an uproar against Senator Golden!
Brooklyn Eagle writer, Paula Katinas published Senator Golden’s comments about “Heroin Not Being a Ghetto Drug.” Katinas exposed a serious problem and Marty was labeled a racists by various outlets (here, here and here)
Then today on Valentine’s Day, John Alexander wrote an opinion piece called: Why I Love Senator Golden. Alexander started the article by referring to Golden’s snafu as an off-hand comment!
John Alexander interviewed Golden’s Chief of Staff, Jerry Kassar. Alexander wrote: “Kassar thinks Golden is in a unique position to help introduce bills benefiting Brooklyn.”
John Alexander knows that Golden’s latest bills are Pay-To-Play Bills for Cigarette Companies. Why would Alexander shine the light on how Senator Golden isn’t working for his communities in Brooklyn, but rather a few individuals? See the bills here
John Alexander talked to John Quaglione and wrote: “Golden was also a proponent of the Barclays Center from the onset before it was even built, according to his Deputy Chief of Staff John Quaglione. “He was one of the key original supporters of the project.”
Why would John Alexander remind Bay Ridge residents that Marty Golden supported the eminent domain-created failure inwhich politicians and developers stole a neighborhood to build that center? (Source) Why didn’t Quaglione name something that Marty did for Bay Ridge?
When Twitter saw Alexander’s piece, they thought that Alexander was declaring his love for the fallen politicians, and Fight Back Bay Ridge made the #NotSoGolden hashtag for Valentine’s Day. They invited Bay Ridge residents to share why they don’t love Senator Golden.

February’s feature is “Hidden Figures.” “Hidden Figures” is the untold story of three African-American female mathematicians whose contribution to NASA’s early stages of the space program made it possible for the U.S. to enter into space for the first time.

February 13, 2018The Brooklyn Chamber Celebrated with AirBnB as a Sponsor……Who Owns Brooklyn?
The Brooklyn Chamber pushed AirBnB from the start. AirBnB created a demand in housing and rents went up…..A LOT. (See here) The Brooklyn Chamber tweeted this because it’s so out of touch with Brooklyn:
Whose thriving in Brooklyn? I see people leaving Brooklyn because they can’t afford to live here.
The Brooklyn Chamber shared the above blurb in their report (page 5). For a Brooklyn family who is barely making ends meet are paying $2500+ in rent, but the Brooklyn Chamber is happy some residents got substantial supplementary income. How much? $146 million, Andrew Hoan, president of the Brooklyn Chamber bragged to Kings County Politics
The Brooklyn Chamber didn’t care that our government has spent time and resources trying to regulate AirBnB so that the hotel industry here can exist and communities don’t get destroyed by people renting out their homes to one and two night stays. But still there are people who don’t comply.
Businesses continue to close in Bay Ridge. Do you see the Brooklyn Chamber helping businesses in Bay Ridge? I don’t. Shouldn’t we see the Chamber to Go on Third and Fifth Avenue helping business owners? We used to see it parked overnight in the residential part of the community because someone who worked there took it home. People would post pictures of it on Facebook all the time.
Whose running Brooklyn? We think it is whoever is throwing money around.
These businesses aren’t paying $$$ to be sponsors because the people at the Chamber smile nicely.
Last year, Vinnie Gentile gave the Chamber $20,000 for the 13th Avenue Merchants. The year before too. NYC Council gave a lot of money to the Brooklyn Chamber.
I’m not sure what the Chamber did for the 13th Avenue Merchants, but the Brooklyn Chamber doesn’t even have the 13th Avenue Merchants in their Directory. The store below has been closed for years is still in the Brooklyn Chambers outdated directory.
The Chamber certainly did a lot of advertising. Why is the Brooklyn Chamber lobbying our government for money if it has this much money to advertise?
This year the Brooklyn Chamber received a grant for $750,000 from TDBank, so they shouldn’t be seeking money from City Council for 2018.
The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce put out a report (page 2) that stated there was 4.9% unemployed in Brooklyn. Are all of those homeless people that we see are employed somewhere or did they just not matter because they are vagrants and don’t get to be counted in the statistics? Homelessness is up by 39% THIS YEAR. We can see homeless people all over the streets in Brooklyn. One out of 147 New Yorkers is homeless.(Source) Homelessness in New York City has reached the highest levels since the Great Depression of the 1930s. (Source)
If you think that homelessness doesn’t affect you, you are wrong. One reporter noted that as homelessness increases, our district will lose more than half of the affordable housing in the area.

Don’t worry homeless people, Andrew Hoan and the Brooklyn Chamber needed a gala. When they closed the doors to the gala, the 63,495 homeless people in NYC disappeared.

February 12, 2018Bay Ridge Community Council – What Do They Do?
*UPDATE: To be a member – fill out this form and mail it in with the dues.
The Bay Ridge Community Council was established in 1951 and serves as an umbrella organization for its member organizations. (Yeah that’s not good…I’ll explain more on this later).
*This group is not elected by the public. This is important to note as it makes them the same as a Kiwanis Club or other community group…..but the name of the organization makes it sound like they are elected. Brooklyn used to have elected school boards in each area. This group may have an election within their organization because they have officers, but the officers have mostly stayed mostly the same since 2015.
Mission: To promote the moral, social and economic welfare of the people living and/or working in Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Fort Hamilton.

- Member organizations – yes this part is strange. The organizations listed on the linked page are members and someone can’t be a member unless they are a school or a block association or they make up a 503 association.

What do they do?
- In October 2018, they are holding a debate at Xaverian High School. They run the Halloween Window Decorating Contest each Fall.
- In 2018, this will be the 66th year for window painting (October 25th- Rain date October 30th). The windows look beautiful throughout the community.
- In October 2018, they held a debate at Xaverian High School between Max Rose and Dan Donovan. In October 2017, BRCC ran the City Council debate at Xaverian for candidates in Bay Ridge
- They held a Gala at the end of Spring to celebrate activism in the community. Here’s what 2017’s gala looked like.
- In May 2018, the Bay Ridge Community Council gave out 16 Kassenbrock scholarships to students in this community for being involved and doing community service. The awards ranged from $1,000 – $5000 dollars. In 2015, there were 16 scholarship winners as well. The funds for these scholarships come from a variety of sources including two main fundraisers a years; a luncheon in March and a bus trip to Atlantic City in October. The scholarships are also funded through donations, including many from former scholarship winners. In 2009, 18 students won a Kassenbrock scholarship.
- In March 2018, the Bay Ridge Community Council organized a rally against the property across the street from PS 104 on 92nd Street and 5th Avenue because it may be building a hotel there (and the hotel could turn into a homeless shelter). The rally looked like it was run by Senator Golden because of the way it was advertised and how it appeared on social media.
- They hold an annual photo contest every Spring.
- In the Spring, they honor NYPD and FDNY with awards.
- They gave out hidden treasure awards (this was started in 2004).
- They help out and donate gift cards for the Christmas Party at the Army Base.
- They hold an essay contests for students.
- They held fundraisers such as a trip to Atlantic City or a night at the races in order to support senior citizens or The Kassenbrock Brothers Memorial Scholarship Fund (these are $1000 to $5000 scholarships for high schools students going to college who did community service……Brian Kassenbrock is on the Board of Directors – see here)
- BRCC Photo Contest – Entrants must live, work or attend school in Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights or Fort Hamilton, or be a member of a BRCC organization. Amateurs only, no professional photographers please.Contest is open to students grades 5-12 and adults of all ages. One print allowed per entrant.
- The advertisement for the Bay Ridge Community Council in the local paper says that the BRCC holds public forums on matters of community concern……we haven’t seen those….but maybe that’s because they aren’t widely advertised.
