February 23, 2018Golden, Malliotakis and Harris Fall Short on State Property Tax Legislation for Bay Ridge
Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis unsuccessfully ran for Mayor in 2017. She talked about property tax reform. Malliotakis is a state legislature and had a way to control the property tax in NYS for a long time. Senator Andy Lanza introduced bill S1214A which establishes a 2% limitations upon real property tax levies in cities of over 1,000,000 (unless City Council has a 2/3 vote to override he levy cap). Michael Cusick in the Assembly sponsored the bill.
Why didn’t they freeze property taxes for areas like Bay Ridge and Staten Island that over taxed? Why didn’t they change the tax rate? What about rebates for property tax owners who have been over taxed?
At the start of February, we thought Nicole Malliotakis woke up and was going to write a great property tax bill, but as usual Malliotakis falls short.
The state controls the tax too so blaming the Mayor isn’t beneficial. Councilman Borelli’s bill for the city seems to be a game changer. Borelli urged residents to encourage their state reps to back a tax bill. When I asked him this week if there was a state bill, he said no.
Senator Golden and Assemblywoman Malliotakis should be writing several bills as their areas have been hit hard by property taxes, yet they are just co-sponsors to this one cheap bill. Don’t worry though, these two media hounds will fill the paper with look at what DeBlasio has done, rather than owning up to what they haven’t done.
Senator Golden did manage to write four bills for the cigarette industry, yet he is only the co-sponsor of one bill for property taxes? C’mon! Senator Golden wrote a bill to give huge tax breaks to developers in Manhattan and he doesn’t have anything for Bay Ridge residents? (Nicole Malliotakis voted yes to Golden’s bill.)
Pam Harris is indicted and we are surprised she hasn’t tried to throw her name on bill S1214A…..I hear it’s a pretty easy thing to be a co-sponsor of a bill.
In addition, Senator Golden should be making himself accessible to deBlasio so that a discussion can be held between the city and state over the property tax rates. Enough of the nonsense banter, Golden!

February 23, 2018District 20 & 21 – Safe School Districts in NY
District 20 and 21 were named in the list of the safest school districts in NY State. District 20 was #11 out of 670. It sounds good, but one serious incident could happen in any district.
District 21 was #21 on the list. On February 15th, IS 281 Joseph B. Cavallaro School at 8787-24th Avenue had a 14-year-old student taken into police custody after he told a teacher that he planned to “shoot up the school.” (Source) So is District 21 still 21 or did is fall lower?
On February 14th around 4:00 pm, two 16-year-old male teens at the Brooklyn Prospect Charter School at 3002 Fort Hamilton Parkway (it’s across the street from Sean Casey Animal Rescue) threatened to kill their classmates over Snapchat. They said, “Don’t come to school tomorrow. We are gunning you down.” (Source) There was mention of a picture of an AR-15 type weapon. More here and here The teens were arrested.

February 23, 2018Embrace Winter Festival in Bay Ridge 3/3
Businesses along Third Avenue from 69th Street to 89th Street will have music or fun art activities for kids from noon until 6 pm. Some shops have special displays, some have games and some establishments have music.
Appletree Natural Market 7613 3rd Avenue is creating paper roses from 12:00 – 4:15 pm.
In other years, Consentino’s Fish Store at 6927 3rd Avenue had a ice fishing game hosted and the owner dressed up as Olaf the Snowman (so cute)
Salty Dog has music.
Hom 8806 3rd Ave has a movie at the end of the day. This year a movie about stickball, “When Broomsticks Were King” will be shown at 5:30 pm and the producer will take questions afterwards.(Source)

February 23, 2018Steve McInnis, Carpenter Union Prez Steps Down
In the November election, the Carpenter’s Union made an endorsement in our area, Bay Ridge. Usually unions make careful decisions, but the Carpenter’s Union backed a candidate who was supported by REBNY, a Super Pac (John Quaglione – more info here).
Most of the unions supported our new Councilman, Justin Brannan as Brannan supported unions. Solidarity is pretty important with unions, so it was weird to see the Carpenter’s Union make that endorsement. In how many other communities did the Carpenter’s Union make such a careless endorsement?
Today, I saw the president of the carpenter’s union, Steve McInnis stepped down. (Story here and here) They removed his name from the union website already!! Maybe the Carpenter’s Union will get a good leader, who will understand that making an endorsement in a community is not something to be taken lightly.

February 21, 2018Beat Cops Coming to Bay Ridge
It’s called Community Policing now, but the position was known as the beat cop for many years.
I love beat cops. I grew up in Sunset Park and we had amazing police officers who knew everyone and we knew them. Do you know how happy I am to hear that we will have beat cops?! WOOHOOOO! Bay Ridge needs the NYPD on our streets and maintaining a presence in this great community!
Many thanks to Councilman Justin Brannan for getting this program for our area. When Brannan campaigned, he spoke about this. We knew it was going to happen because Brannan loves Bay Ridge, but I don’t think anyone thought it would happen so quickly! Thanks to Commissioner O’Neill for choosing Bay Ridge for the community policing program and Captain Hayward and the 68th Precinct for being optimistic and open to the program. More information here
