Senator Ortiz Calls for Textalyzer. Will That Stop Bay Ridge from Texting While Driving?

Senator Ortiz has a bill in the Assembly which will allow a textalyzer to check a cell phone after an accident to see if a person was texting or using apps was a cause of the accident. The textalyzer can tell if a person was using hands free cell phone use vs. texting. More info

At the Community Board 10  Meeting people were concerned about how the textalyzer could be used as a gotcha or record false results. Some people also expressed their gratitude for the bill.

A Hotel is Coming to Bay Ridge – Like it or Not

What’t happening across the street from PS 104 on 5th Avenue and 92nd Street? A hotel is coming to the empty lot next to the Windows R Us store across the street from PS/IS 104. This was announced at the CB 10 Meeting on February 26, 2018.

This building is going to be pretty high – 70 feet high so it will probably be as tall as the building across the street from St. Patrick’s Church – that’s seven stories- see here.   The lot goes from 5th Avenue to 4th Avenue (BP Gas Station is on the other side).

Why didn’t the Department of Education grab this lot for a pre-school?

Why hasn’t Marty Golden written a bill to stop Mayor deBlasio from using hotels as shelters? (See here)  Pam Harris isn’t going to do anything because she has her own issues, so Marty should have by now!  But he’s busy writing bills for the cigarette industry….see here

It’s great if it actually is a hotel for visitors to use as there is only one hotel in Bay Ridge. In Sunset Park, Brooklyn, developers have put up hotels and then the hotels weren’t occupied so the owners applied to have homeless people put in them. While this is a commercial area, there is a school across the street so this could be a problem!

Also some hotels get used by men using prostitutes in the evening, so that could be a concern for this community as well.

I can see parents at the school having a problem with this.

*Truth be told: This was the first I heard of this and I felt like it was buried behind other less important news.

Senator Golden and Nicole Malliotakis Haven’t Done Anything for Local Businesses.

Why are Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis and Senator Marty Golden fighting to save Internet businesses a few dollars, rather than fighting for Bay Ridge’s  neighborhood Mom and Pop Stores? Whose pulling these politicians strings to make them pay attention to sales tax on the Internet? Maybe it’s just Golden’s and Malliotakis’ quick response to Governor Cuomo’s  discussion of an “internet fairness conformity tax.”

Usually Golden and Malliotakis side with Trump, but Trump wants purchases online to be taxed.

If you stood on any major Avenue or Street in Bay Ridge, you would see that many blocks have empty stores. Businesses have been closing like crazy due to high rents for storefronts. Small business owners need a break.

Senator Golden and Nicole Malliotakis aren’t doing anything to help our local stores.  In the last two elections, these two politicians presented the idea that they supported small businesses, but with all the closed shops, how will they do that in the Fall?

Senator Golden has four bills for the cigarette industry this year!! Why hasn’t Nicole Malliotakis called out Marty Golden about this?

On February 26th both Golden and Malliotakis sent a representative to the Community Board 10 Meeting. Their representatives barely said anything. On March 1st, they announced that they would be having a rally the following day outside of Golden’s office. Why didn’t they share this with the community? Cuomo announced the Internet Fairness Conformity Tax on January 16th, so this was not something new.

If someone is shopping from the convenience of their home, they shouldn’t receive a break. The small shops that makeup our community need the break!

Big Shots Calling Out Harris – Sunday, 3/11

Next Sunday, the big shots are at it again. They are going to rally against Pam Harris to resign at 8525 – 3rd Avenue at 1:30 pm.   In February, the tough guys organized and then didn’t show up for their rally because there was a little rain.

Assemblywoman Harris’ office is closed on Sunday, so it’s just a picture-taking moment for a couple of scared men who want to call out Harris, but not to her face. Yeah we get it, you want to take a picture and send a press release to the cheesy papers who will print it.

C’mon fellas – Be brave and bold –  go to Coney Island on a day Harris is at her office and call for her to resign.

Staten Island St. Patty’s Day Parade Organizers Do Better Next Year

Irish night on shore road - august 2017

A group of people went to the trouble of organizing a St. Patty’s Day parade so everyone could celebrate being Irish. Well, everyone except LGBQT Irish.

As soon as March 1st comes, we start celebrating St. Patty’s Day. To hear that some people were told they couldn’t join in the St. Patty’s Day Parade in Staten Island makes me sad. We can understand if this continued because the organizers were Irish Protestants and don’t relate to our Pope.

In 2016, the Pope said, “The church must say it’s sorry for not having comported itself well many times, many times.I believe that the church not only must say it’s sorry … to this person that is gay that it has offended,” said the Pope.  Further the Pope said, “I will also repeat what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says: that [gay people] should not be discriminated against, that they have to be respected, pastorally accompanied.”

Please do better next year, Staten Island Irish Parade Organizers. Don’t let my students grow up in a world where people hate them for being who they are – it’s just not right.

Spend time celebrating St. Patty’s Day with everyone and don’t accept any reason to leave someone out.
