Santa at South Brooklyn Foundry

This place is one of our top ten in Bay Ridge. Everything about the place is awesome. The owners are nice people and they answer a lot of questions.  It’s cool they have dinner with Santa – something different.

NYC Dept of Buildings Declared War on Bay Ridge Merchants Over Signs

Bay Ridge Merchants are taking the brunt of the new Mayor de Blasio “Let’s Make Money from Bay Ridge” storm.  See story here

Store owners are being fined thousands of dollars for illegal signs which have been hanging in some case for decades.

Councilman Justin Brannan:

The above True Value sign has been up for 30 years – before the current owner took over the store. NYC is fining him almost $8000. Melissa Nail Salon in Bay Ridge was fined $6000 by the New York City Department of Buildings for his sign.

Brannan posted pics of signs that were removed from stores in our neighborhood.

Stores in Bay Ridge aren’t the only targets,  residents told Councilman Brannan that store owners on 8th Avenue, 13th Avenue and 18th Avenue removed their signs as well.  (See here)

Curtis Sliwa for Public Advocate – Update: Maybe?!

Update: New information….MAYBE SLIWA? See this He wants to do away with the office.

Bob Capano, Chairman of the Reform Party is pushing Curtis Sliwa for Public Advocate – Noooooo! We don’t want someone yelling at everyone and getting nowhere. If NYC needs to have a Public Advocate (I don’t think the position is necessary and it can be eliminated), then we need someone who is pragmatic and won’t allow corruption in the local government.

Here’s the real sad part: Curtis Sliwa’s wife, Nancy already announced that she was running for Public Advocate. What a slap in the face for Curtis to think he could announce his candidacy after his wife announced she was running! Although Nancy doesn’t have a high profile, she is a good person and an animal advocate. Why wouldn’t Capano and Sliwa let Nancy have the spotlight?

Eric Ulrich’s name was floated by the Republicans. Capano isn’t supporting Ulrich because Ulrich supported Melissa Mark Vivierto (good reason) AND because Ulrich didn’t support Nicole Malliotakis for mayor  (that’s a good thing as Malliotakis would have made a terrible mayor). The Republicans love to lose – they can’t get behind one candidate and win because they are such ego-manics.

While Bob Capano may have wanted to support his crony, Nicole Malliotakis; Nicole is not a good leader in Bay Ridge. Leaders are the first voices we hear from and they are speaking for the people. Nicole is one of the last voices heard on most topics (sometimes she is even a week after everyone else – see here). The only time Malliotakis is fast to respond is when she insults or attacks Mayor de Blasio on Twitter.

Nicole quietly voted the same way as Marty Golden (against speed cameras – our community needs them because speed is crazy here * See today’s accident: here)

Nicole Malliotakis voted in favor of Golden’s legislation – yes, she voted to give tax breaks to Manhattan developers (she was silent on social media after this vote). Instead of taking care of Bay Ridge or Staten Island residents with high property tax.

Nicole Malliotakis is so far removed from regular people that she didn’t even  know the minimum wage (click here) in New York (and didn’t think anything was wrong with that).

Nicole must laugh as she tricks NY’ers with her press releases and finds a journalist lazy enough to print them. During this election season, one journalist wrote that Malliotakis had submitted new legislation for property taxes – she did not and we thought she would because she talked about it during her run for Mayor. Apparently, Nicole intends to submit the bill when the Assembly resumes in January 2019.

Bob Capano is aware that Nicole Malliotakis has endorsed at least two candidates who received support from REBNY – see here and here, so her disregard for property owners in Bay Ridge and throughout Brooklyn is obvious.

It’s disappointing that Capano and the Reform Party keep pushing Nicole in our area. We are watching Bob….especially because our community could have received a lot more money if Malliotakis’ opponent won. Bob….Bay Ridge doesn’t receive much money from Malliotakis when she is giving out her perks to Staten Island.

Cornerstone Church Gives Out Coats in Bay Ridge

I love stories like this! Cornerstone Church set up a table outside of Senator-Elect, Andrew Gounardes office at 311 – 86th Street in Bay Ridge and gave out coats.

Amazing! So thankful for Cornerstone Church – I don’t attend their church, but they are always building this community with their good works.

If you still have a coat to donate, contact Elliot Lamboy in Bay Ridge ([email protected]). He is another good guy in our neighborhood. Elliot picks up the coats and he has a goal this year of 2000 coats!

Overturned Car on 85th Street in Bay Ridge

See Loudlabs video here and here

This morning before 10:00 am, a car was traveling on 85th Street & Colonial Road in Bay Ridge. Above we can see it is flipped on it’s side and the driver was trapped. They got the drive3r and the passenger out of the car.

Then I saw photo journalist, Todd Maisel’s tweet. I looked on the Eagle and Spectator’s news sites, but I didn’t find a story about the overturned car on either.

What speed does a car need to be going to flip over? There’s no way the car could have flipped at 20 MPH.  The driver should be fined and pay for the use of city resources.

The police, fire department and EMS had to race out to Bay Ridge to save the day.

Update 12/2: On Thursday, November 29th,  there was a flipped car in Dyker Heights – see here

Councilman Justin Brannan in Videos

This week, Councilman Brannan made a debut in a YouTube videoe. Brannan played a reporter named Tom Shamrock in a new Bobo Touch Helpline video.

Bay Ridge comedic film creators, Brian Bonz and Mike Rizzo have been creating films in the area for years. Brannan does a great job acting in this video:

Brannan appears at 1:00 into the video

I’m glad to see Brannan is supporting the arts and is taking time to help local artists too.

Brannan also appeared in a documentary about Kader El-Yateem called: Father K.

The movie is a documentary  about Reverend Khader El-Yateem’s run for city council – as Brannan’s opponent. I believe El-Yateem was made to be a matyr because he had the underdog’s story.

Pastor Calls Out Senator-Elect Gounardes

Senator-Elect Andrew Gounardes was called out on social media by Father Michael Gelfant, Pastor of  Saint Finbar’s Church. Father Gelfant often feels that his church and parishioners are overlooked for services and money (which may be true).

Senator-Elect Gounardes responded that he invited residents of Bath Beach and Bensonhurst, but he also welcomed Father Gelfant’s input for more names.

Then Liam McCabe joined in to try to ride this topic.

You can follow the topic here – Republicans talking about white priviledge….ughh c’mon.

As head of the Verrazano Republicans,  Liam McCabe retweeted Gelfant’s message.

Liam McCabe knows Andrew Gounardes. He KNOWS Gounardes is a good person and isn’t going to leave anyone out. The divisiveness in the community needs to stop. McCabe knows better than this. We need Republicans who can work with Gounardes – not attack him when he isn’t even in office yet. When Andrew lost his election to Golden in 2012, he lost by around 10,000 votes.

Now in 2018, even some Republicans wanted Gounardes over Golden. What happened to all of those people who voted for Marty Golden in 2012?

2012 Election

Some moved, some died, but a lot voted for Andrew because they were tired of the nonsense.

2018 Elections

I KNOW Andrew would not leave out any ethnic group – from anything. Days before this outburst, on November 27th – Gounardes was clear that he was looking to hire a diverse staff -click here.

One of  Gounardes’ supporters responded that there is a member on Gounardes’ transition team who is Hispanic, but that his/her name may not show his/her ethnicity. Interesting, right? We can’t tell people’s ethnicity just by their last name. McCabe would know this because of his sons!

This year (and other years too), I have seen Father Gelfant chastise the local politicians for not donating any turkeys to his parish (except for Marty Golden). For next year, pols and staff to pols, can you please check in with Saint Finbar to make sure they have enough turkeys. The Knights of Columbus helped Father Gelfant, but this local good guy offered too.

Will Father Gelfant build the community and provide leader’s names to Gounardes or is this all about cheesy Twitter call-outs? Father Gelfant has publicly supported Republicans (even ones who accepted REBNY support) in past elections, but he didn’t throw support to any candidates this past November.

I think Father Gelfant should give Senator Gounardes a little time to get setup and then meet with him with a list of things his community needs and the dates that he would like to invite Senator Gounardes or one of his representatives to attend events.  Start fresh for the new year with a fresh Senator whose listening and ready to change this community….and give people a chance – even Democrats. <wink>

Chef Andrea Closed

Chef Andrea’s Restaurant at 7312 13th Avenue in Dyker Heights closed.

Chef Andrea served delicious food! He’s retired and going to Florida.

Then a resident posted a picture of Chef Andrea’s restaurant is now a Mexican restaurant:

Here’s something strange – the NYPD has gone to the restaurant many times because of noise.

The new place is using the old place’s liquor license.

Apparently the men pay ladies to dance with them here.  Like what?!
