When is the 18th Avenue Feast 2019?
“When is the 18th Avenue Feast?” is a question I am always asked.
Also known as the Festa di Santa Rosalia, this year the Feast of St. Rosalie or the Italian feast is being held from Thursday, August 22nd to Sunday, September 1st from 68th Street to 75th Street. During the week, it opens at 6:00 pm and closes at 11:00 pm. On the weekend, it opens at 2:00 pm.

We went on Friday night and it was really good. A lot of people came back this year and the streets were packed. There was a good mix of food and music. We had a great time seeing everyone.
We didn’t go on Saturday night, but we heard the streets were packed because everyone came back again. Next weekend, everyone said they are coming in again because it was so good. The last Sunday in September (the 29th) is the 3rd Avenue Festival 10:00 am – 6:00 pm, so they are coming back for that too.
Why is it better this year? I think the people who planned it did a better job. The way the merchants and the music is on the street is really good – like it’s setup right. They also got the word out early this year.
Things are a little expensive at street fairs everywhere – not just this one.
Tickets are $1.25 per ticket and the rides need 3-6 tickets. The ferris where is 6 tickets. Bring a kid on it and see their eyes widen when you reach the top – priceless!

Every year, there is always a little teenage drama at the fair (it’s what teenagers do, in case you forgot).
Some people were worried when they saw the Guardian Angels and Curtis Sliwa. You will see Sliwa posing in pictures all over social media because there he doesn’t have anything else to do at the fair.

Update: Snowdays NYC had it’s soft opening at 7025 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge today 7/4.
Shaved cream is an Asian-inspired frozen dessert which is a hybrid of ice cream and shaved ice.
Snowdays NYC is a shaved cream shop.

Vegan Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream at Uncle Louie G’s in Bay Ridge. He also has strawberry (below) and of vanilla too.
This is a Bay Ridge business which is in touch with the community. There are a lot of vegans living in the area, as well as people who have allergies and selling alternate products not only shows the owner is in touch with the community, but also welcomes new ideas to the business!

July 3, 2019Bay Ridge Cares Needs Volunteers Next Week
A senior in Bay Ridge recently passed away. Her daughter is coming from Arizona and needs help packing up her mother’s belongings at Shore Hill Apartments at 9000 Shore Road.
Shore Hill already gave an extension of three weeks and has generously agreed to give her until the 15th of the month of July with no additional rent requested, but this extension can only be met if she gets some help packing.
Bay Ridge Cares needs volunteers Monday, July 8th through Friday, July 12th from 12:00 – 2:00 pm or from 2:00 – 4:00 pm to help box up items. You may use the Shore Hill parking lot if you volunteer.
Please sign up here if you have some free time next week.
All volunteers be at least 16 years old (sorry no small children).
Bay Ridge Cares is an amazing organization which jumps in to help when people need it.

July 3, 2019Update: Owner & Dog Reunited 7/5
7/5 Update: Good people are reuniting Zsa Zsa and her owner! Hooray!
This dog ran away from their home around 72nd Street and 12th Avenue in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn around noon today.
The family misses their dog. Hopefully the dog is found before the fireworks start.

July 3, 2019Kiteboarding Classes in Brooklyn
If you are on driving on the Belt Parkway and there is a lot of traffic, you certainly have seen the top of the kites at Plumb Beach. Most people just assume that it’s just a lot of people standing on the beach with a kite attached to a string.
What a lot of people don’t realize is that Plumb Beach is a location for Kiteboarding classes – see here And the beach looks like this:
The items on the beach that look like folded tens are actually the kites which allow the person to kitesurf.
Years ago, Plumb Beach was filthy and polluted, but the city and a lot of groups have worked on trying to keep it clean.

Have you visited Lockyard and tried “The Narrows” cocktail?
It’s their version of a cucumber lime margarita. They also have a beer menu.
Lockyard is at 9221 5th Avenue – near the firehouse. They have a backyard and they serve hot dogs and other foods – see here – even a kids menu.

July 3, 2019New Senior Center Coming to 3rd Avenue
NORC – Naturally Occurring Retirement Community. (If this sounds like Bay Ridge is getting old….it’s not – it’s just a way of saying the area is drinking more cocktails and enjoying life!)
At the Community Board 10 meeting in the beginning of June, they spoke about Bay Ridge receiving a huge grant to be used over five years.
They are opening a walk-in Senior Storefront to reach seniors between the ages of 60-75 who aren’t using all of the resources that are out there. The storefront will be at 7609 – 3rd Avenue – the old Zen store.
If you are older, don’t worry about it – just make up an age in that range and go enjoy this place when it opens. When a place is new, they have very motivated people there, so get your questions ready for them.

July 2, 2019Mailboxes in Bay Ridge – Sticky Inside
The sticky substance is put inside the box to catch envelopes that thieves are looking to steal checks (that they recreate) or other personal information. In December, the Post Office replaced the mailbox on 70th Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway immediately when the sticky substance was reported. (See here)
We stopped using the mailboxes on the street because we have heard about residents having stolen checks or seeing a sticky substance inside the box.

Saragoza Cruz is missing.
Saragoza Cruz is 81-years-old Hispanic woman who was last seen on July 2nd at 5:38 am at 76th Street and 20th Avenue in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.
She is from 76th Street and 10th Avenue in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn.
Sargoza has dementia and may be in need of medical attention.
Sargoza is 5’3″ and 125 lbs.
She has black hair and brown eyes.
Sargoza is wearing a white shirt, white shoes and blue pants.
Please call the police if you see Sargoza.

The sidewalk outside of Max Rose’s Office at 8203 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge was packed with people protesting against his recent vote.

About 170 residents from Brooklyn and Staten Island showed up outside of Congressman Max Rose’s office because Rose voted in favor of funding the camps that are holding migrant children.

Rose put this message on Twitter around noon, two hours before the protest. Rose wrote that he will visit the border and check the facilities first-hand.
Which is why I am planning to visit the border to see these facilities first hand this Summer, am calling for all Congressional recesses to be cancelled until we confront this crisis with the urgency it deserves. 2/

Many of these residents campaigned for Congressman Rose, so they voiced their disagreement with his vote and vowed to bring him a challenger if he didn’t help close the camps. See video

Many mothers in Bay Ridge showed up to the protest because they oppose the harsh treatment of caging migrant children.
Although Rose’s office has only been open a few weeks, there have already been three protests outside.
