Free Science Storytime in Bay Ridge on Saturdays

Urban Steam Lab has a free Science Storytime every Saturday morning from 10:00 – 10:30 am.

Storytime is good for children ages 2-5 years old.

Sticky Mailboxes on 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge

Mailboxes in Bay Ridge had a sticky residue placed inside the box to help those who are mailbox fishing.
When you open the box, the sticky substance is on the inside wall after the open door. Unknowing residents put their mail in the box. Then mail thieves put their hand in the mailbox and retrieve the envelopes that are stuck to the wall.

These mailboxes have been tampered with in Bay Ridge:

95th Street and 3rd Avenue
92nd Street and 3rd Avenue
88th Street & 3rd Avenue

Why do they want your mail? Some are looking for cash – see here. Some are looking for envelopes with checks so they can make their own checks from your check’s information. Check washing info:

See Peter Pan The Musical in Bay Ridge in August

Narrows Community Theater presents Peter Pan – the musical in August at the Fort Hamilton Army Base Theater. Local children are in the show and Xaverian High School’s theater teacher, Jason Santel is the director.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students and $15 for children

Driver Crashed & Dashed – 14th Ave.

Police found a car that collided into the fence without a driver at 14th Avenue and  Cropsey Avenue.

7.29.19 | by Adam Balhetchet | A driver crashed into a fence at Cropsey Avenue & 14th Avenue around 12:30 am Monday within the confines of the 68 Precinct side of 14th Ave.
No one was found in the vehicle when police arrived. The driver may have been driving while under the influence or conducting illegal activities which caused him to flee the scene.

Narrows Community Garden Movies Cancelled

Narrows Community Gardens movies in Shore Road Park are cancelled this Summer. This is strange as they have been able to show movies in the park for years. A royalty fee of $400+ is owed on movies shown in the park.

Someone from the Owls Head Park Volunteers Facebook page must have been upset about the movies not being able to be shown or something else. Using the logo above, that person shared about the movies being cancelled at the park, but then things got a bit sticky with people’s personal politics getting involved. Now residents are calling out the owner of that page for the post  see here.

Update: Narrows Community Garden made an update on Facebook stating that someone from Owls Head Volunteers used their logo without their consent and that NCG has a good relationship with the councilman. See here.

RCS Food Pantry Receives $162,500

Glad to see Councilman Brannan brought a big check to Reaching Out Community Services Food Pantry.
With more people homeless, the food pantry keeps some families afloat. See here.

RIP Em Samolewicz – Memorial 7/30

A thirty year old woman named Em Samolewicz was killed this morning on 4th Avenue in Sunset Park. A driver opened their door into the bike lane where Em was traveling and she swerved to avoid him. Em was hit by a tractor trailer near 35th Street and 4th Avenue.

The Massachusetts transplant lived in Sunset Park and worked as a yoga teacher at an organization called Third Root (see their memorial). She had been an art professor at Rutgers. (See here) Em was an artist – see her art here. She practiced yoga, wrote poetry and was interested in healing practices. Third Root set up a Gofundme.
Em had planned to start a new position in the Fall:

Update: Memorial this afternoon: A candlelight vigil will be held at 5:30 PM in Sunset Park on the corner of Third Avenue and 36th Street.
Also Tuesday 7/30: A gathering will be held to honor Em from 6:30 – 8:30 at Third Root at 380 Marlborough Rd in Brooklyn.

Justin Brannan’s Letter to Rigites About New Light

We didn’t get this letter from Councilman Brannan…it’s dated July 18th. Maybe this type of letter is only for the surrounding blocks of tbe new street light?
67th Street and Ridge Blvd is a two-way street with intersections & no traffic light.
The block leads up to main park entrance and this will make it safer for children to travel to it.
