August 12, 2019Malliotakis Appears on Cover of Progressive Paper
Last October, Dozier Hasty, the owner of the local newspapers in Bay Ridge declared that The Spectator was for Progressive politics and The Home Reporter was for more Conservative politics. See here
Here’s Nicole Malliotakis on the cover of The Spectator from August 8th. Someone at the paper must have thought that was funny!
The Home Report didn’t even feature a small photo of her picture on the cover! See:
The accompanying story didn’t make the Home Reporter either, even though most of the paper is identical to The Spectator.
Normally, you can only find the printed version of the Home Reporter in the community.
Good joke CNG Editor!

August 12, 2019Is Brannan Going to Do Anything About Illegal Conversions?
A meeting was held and a picture was taken the paper. The photo was sent to Paula Katinas and the article was created. DONE – the pols checked that problem off their list for the next three months.
Are these pols really going to do something about illegal conversions NOW?
Gournardes and Brannan met with leaders of government organizations that haven’t been doing their job. Do the pols think these organizations are going to start doing their job today because of this meeting? By the way, this excludes the FDNY, who do their job well, consistently.
Brannan has been in office for a year and half and the illegal conversions have continued. In April, the local politicians wrote a letter and nothing came from that, except it silented the home owners in Dyker Heights for a few months.
If you notice my tone, it’s because last September, Brannan also promised action on the illegal conversion and then nothing happened. See here Councilman Brannan seems occupied with out-of-district things, rather than problems in our district like this (Treyger should be doing this as he is the Coney Island Councilman).
In May, Senator Gounardes wrote a bill for illegal conversions. Yet, he was unable to carry the bill. Strangely, I don’t see an Assembly sponsor for the bill.
In February, Gounardes spoke about a property tax bill which excluded NYC. The bill would allow Andrew Cuomo to get a tax break for his home. When I saw Gounardes speak so enthusiastically about this bill, I realized he forgot he represented Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights. See video here. When I wrote to Gounardes, he told me he had a plan, but nothing came of it.
Brannan blamed the rise of illegal conversions on unaffordable housing. A few years ago, Eric Adams welcomed AirBnB into Brooklyn. Home owners realized they could rent an apartment for a few days or weekend and not have to deal with tenants. That created a demand on apartments and rents skyrocketed. Adams is a former police officer and didn’t have the vision to understand how his support of AirBnB would affect housing.
Predatory landlords continue to create illegal apartments because the fines aren’t enough to stop them.
Before I moved to Bay Ridge, I rented an apartment in Borough Park because it was cheaper. We were saving for a home. So if someone can’t afford an apartment, they can’t break the law and rent an illegal one just because they want to live in a certain area. Just like I can’t afford a mansion in Brooklyn, people have to live in places that they can afford.
There has to be a way for tenants to check the occupancy of a home in an online database before they rent it. NYC has the technology to do this.
Stay tuned and let’s see what gets done….if anything.

August 12, 2019Third Avenue Bid…Something That Was Left Out
Print ballot here
The strongest supporters of the 3rd Avenue BID seem to be people who don’t own businesses on the avenue. See video and see the comments.
The merchants at large, well-established places don’t mind the taxes, but this will hurt a lot of the smaller merchants. They are asking for a new merchants group – not a bid. They do not want to have a tax imposed on them. These are great merchants that we all love and we support them, especially the smaller ones because they are unique and give that personalized experience.
Of course the strolls are a lot of work. These are people who have been in business for themselves for years. Who was paying them to do the stroll all of these years? Dues from the merchants?
The only other difference is that Senator Marty Golden is no longer the representative. Is it possible he funding something that the new senator is not funding?

August 11, 2019Mi Tierra New Columbian Restaurant in Bay Ridge Plus Menu
Mi Tierra opened at 72-04 – 3rd Avenue. This new Columbian – Mexican Restaurant is the former location of That Latin Spot, which closed quietly a few months ago. Prior to that it was my beloved, Salud.
Mi Tierra is “My Land” in Spanish. It’s colorful inside the restaurant – see here. Mi Tierra serves traditional Columbian and Mexican food.
Mi Tierra has free delivery for breakfast, lunch and dinner. 718-748-2042
Larger menu below
See Menu: Page 1
Page 2

Page 4
Update:They are now on seamless and grubhub. We ordered and the delivery was reasonable. The food was excellent. Their empanadas are small, but very tasty. The beans and rice looks standard, but it tastes very good.
Two groups of friends went their this weekend and they said the food was very good! One of them is picky, so I know that means the food is good.
Congratulations to the new owners. May they have a lot of success in Bay Ridge!

August 11, 2019Jose Alzorriz. RIP…Cyclist Killed in Brooklyn Today
Jose Alzorriz, a 52-year-old man was killed in an accident around 12:30 pm in Midwood, Brooklyn today. Story here.
Umar Baig, an 18-year-old driver (seen here) blew the light and hit another car. The teen driver is in the silver Dodge sedan in the video below. Baig hit in the blue Honda SUV, which was pushed onto the sidewalk and hit the cyclist and another pedestrian.

— NYC Scanner (@NYScanner) August 11, 2019
If you watched the video above, you probably couldn’t tell who had the light (you can see it in the next video taken from the opposite direction). There should be a delay between when the opposite direction’s traffic was given the green signal, but there wasn’t.
Jose Alzorriz obeyed the law and waited at the red light, which can be seen (Warning: horrifying video) in this video from the other side of the street.
Warning: the next video is awful (it’s mid-page) . It’s after the collision, both cars are stopped and the Honda is on the sidewalk.
Umar Baig was taken into police custody and was released later. He was not charged with any crime. Yes, that’s outrageous. Story here.
Alzorriz, the 39-year-old driver of the Honda and the 52-year-old pedestrian were all brought to Coney Island Hospital. The other driver and pedestrian are in stable condition.

— 1010 WINS (@1010WINS) August 11, 2019
Who was Jose Alzorriz? He was a financial translator for Citigroup. Jose was a Park Slope resident, who was interested in health and fitness. People at the accident mistook Jose for a man in his 30’s because he was so fit. Jose was a triathlete. He participated in many races throughout the city, including the NYC marathon.
On Wednesday, Agusut 14th, there will be a memorial vigil for Jose on the corner of Coney Island Avenue and Avenue L. (See Pics from the memorial vigil – see here, here, here, here, here and here)
On August 22nd, Umar Baig was charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment and several other counts. (Source)
On Sunday, August 25th, there will be a memorial ride for Jose:

August 11, 2019Is Eric Adams the Most Corrupt Politician in NYC?
The Daily News showed Eric Adams level of corruption. See here
Eric Adam’s One Brooklyn Fund allows him to collect a lot of money from people and corporations that he shouldn’t be collecting from.
Lobbyists own Eric Adams.
Real Estate Development Teams own Eric Adams.
AirBnB was welcomed into NYC by Eric Adams and of course his One Brooklyn Fund received thousands of dollars from AirBnB. This put a demand on the housing market as home owners could make more money per night, rather than deal with a tenant all month. Rents in Brooklyn skyrocketed as a result. And NYC has to fight legal battles with AirBnB. See here
Other politicians know that Eric Adams is doing this, but they don’t do anything to stop it.
How can Eric Adams to do this Brooklyn? He has no respect for Brooklyn.
We can’t let him become mayor.
This past Winter, we saw it took three days for Eric Adams to show up to the Brooklyn prison when the heat was off. See here
The news has also shown Eric Adams does things for Eric Adams. See here , here, here and here
