Halloween in Bay Ridge Was So Good This Year

Halloween in Bay Ridge is always good. But this year it was particularly good.
There were many families dressed up together in a theme this year. About 75% of the parents were in costume, which was cool.
Halloween is a community day. Kids love getting candy from their neighbors. The big kids were out this year and they were wonderful.
Some people wants to criticize older kids for hanging out and enjoying the day……the thing is these are the good kids of the neighborhood, who aren’t handle-surfing or bothering people. Every single teen was polite, said Happy Halloween and thank you. They are a good example to the younger kids. There are a lot of great kids in this community because of great parents!

Holy Angels School is Closing

Holy Angels Catholic Academy is closing. Before it was named Holy Angels, it was Our Lady of Angels. Anytime someone said the name of the school, all I could think of was this story.
Saint Anselm Catholic School at 365 83^rd Street will be renamed to Bay Ridge Catholic Academy and house students from both schools. It’s nice that it is being renamed for the students, but members of St. Anselm Church are not as happy with the renaming. Those renaming the school are doing the right thing by the children attending the schools.
A lot of people are upset about the schools combining because the community was not told or involved in the initial discussions. We heard whisperings about different schools closing the area, but couldn’t confirm with anyone. They knew since at least early September that they needed to downsize. How do I know it was from September? They registered the domain name for the new school:

So the Board of Directors from the schools has been talking without the community for awhile. At the informational meeting, they showed a video and Powerpoint…..and that just angered the parents more. If a new school is being made – why not involve the parents whose children go to these schools? Politics is playing a role here of course, so the best thing the new school can do is have an election for a new board. Parents can insist on it because because being transparent is important now.
Years ago, Saint Anselm had two full classes on each grade level – 30 students each. When I saw their June 2019 graduating class picture, it was obvious that a change was coming. Mayor de Blasio’s pre-k program is popular there.
There have been rumors about Catholic schools in the area closing, but St. Patrick’s is still doing well and thriving! Their curriculum is modern, every student from grades 4-8 has an iPad and the students in early childhood share one. St. Pat’s offers three Regents classes to their 8th graders. Finally, the building is well-maintained and has a new gym and is air-conditioned. St. Pats is not closing or combining. St. Ephrem and St. Bernadette’s are also still open.
What about Heartshare and Treasure Island who use the Holy Angels school building? They will probably continue to rent space – maybe even more space! There’s also the Bay Ridge Summer Sports and Theater Camp there which will continue to rent the building as parents love that affordable option.
Although it will be in the St. Anselm building, it will be a new school – which is good for everyone! New schools revitalize education and the combining of these communities will be good for Bay Ridge as well.

The Silent Bill that Andrew Gounardes Doesn’t Have Time to Tell the Community

Five days ago, the governor signed a bill into law about NYC property taxes. See bill here

It’s written strangely and it says it is a property cap for NYC. It mentions it is around a $300 savings.
Senator Gounardes should have done a press release about this by now, but he didn’t bother. He sent out a flyer with his picture on this week – just like Marty Golden used to do….really? Do we need another picture of him?

Of course there are plenty of people in his office and not one of them could have done the press release either.
This is in the bill:

This legislation would adjust that rule, for one year only, to cap the maximum class share growth at 0.0 percent for New York City. The effect of this change would be to reduce the amount by which the current base proportions for any class, including class one, is allowed to grow, resulting in citywide savings of about $321 for a typical owner of a class one single family home. Under a cap of 0.0 percent, class two properties will see a decrease in their tax rate, making that rate the lowest it has been since fiscal year 2009. Additionally, under a cap of 0.0 percent, the rate for class three properties increases by 3.7 percent from fiscal 2019, however, the change only brings that rate back up to a level similar to those from fiscal 2009 through 2013.

And to all the Bay Ridge residents who have told us that our property taxes are a lot more than theirs – thanks….Residents were mad that theirs was $6000 – $7000….until they saw ours was 9K.

Tomorrow Brannan Will Vote for Covered Bike Lanes for Manhattan

10/30 Update: Brannan didn’t even mention the vote. If it was so big and great, why did he fail to mention it?
Tomorrow you will see hipocracy at its finest. Councilman Justin Brannan will vote in favor of Corey Johnson’s bill $1.7 Billion Dollar Bill to “end car culture.” See here or here or here
It’s almost 11:00 pm and Brannan didn’t even mention the bill on any of his social media accounts, even though many other politicians and organizations did.
If you remember, last Spring, Brannan overrode Community Board 10 to install bike lanes with paint on some streets. You are now seeing our streets being grinded and looking like a mess to accommodate the painted bike lanes that Brannan called into Keith Brey (Brooklyn DOT)
Plus Brannan’s family has a huge SUV and he has admitted to using Uber…a lot. People in Brooklyn don’t have fast trains that can get them around.

Tomorrow the politicians will cheer, as if they have done something for all of NYC, but we all know it’s just “the chosen parts” of NYC which will receive better designed roads and covered bike lanes.
Wouldn’t it be something if they passed a law that actually helped people in Bay Ridge?

RIP Ola Salem

Ola Salem was only 25 year old and her body was found in Staten Island today. Story here

RIP Ola. Prayers for Ola’s friends and family who are going to be devastated by this news. There are some beautiful pictures of her on Facebook.
Everything I have read about Ola says she was a kind and loving person. One article stated that Ola was the first person to volunteer at a shelter for women (See here)

The Teal Pumpkin For Kids Will Allergies

The weather isn’t looking good for Thursday afternoon. Too bad someone can’t move Halloween to Friday or Saturday so the kids could enjoy their day.
The teal pumpkin became a thing a few years ago. Some kids have allergies and need non-food items, so we got them play dough and light sticks. Last year we had light sticks and foam airplanes that the kids loved, but we couldn’t find them this year.
