Collision on 89th Street and Colonial

A car collision happened on 89th Street and Colonial.  Neither car would pull over.  Why?  Because people want the police report to reflect who caused the accident so the insurance company will blame the other drive.

While NYS is a “no fault” insurance state, some companies don’t increase rates if the report says it wasn’t your cars fault.

The 68th Precinct NYPD still have not responded to the collision, over an hour and a half later. Why don’t they have a car just to do this?

The cars behind the accident are riding down the sidewalk.

The Brooklyn Eagle Axed a Great Staff

The local paper, The Brooklyn Eagle fired four key members of their staff yesterday, including the editors. We’re surprised because these people really valued journalism.

1) Ned Berke, Editor-in-chief issued a statement – see here

Press release politics and writers rewriting police reports made us lose real journalists:

2) Sara Bosworth, Managing, digital editor – see here

3) Meaghan McGoldrick, Reporter – Remember when Meaghan called the developer when the elected guy wouldn’t?    See here

4) Cambria Roth also said she worked for The Eagle. I never heard of her. Cambria’s LinkedIn shows she only worked there since October as the Audience and Growth Manager.

Good luck to all!

J.D. Hasty is the Publisher of the paper. It’s sad that he kept on a journalist who doesn’t live in Brooklyn!

No Walk Against Hate This Year in Bay Ridge

For four years, there has been a walk against hate in Bay Ridge on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Something must have happened to one of the organizers of Bay Ridge for Social Justice because they are having an alternate event….one that doesn’t involve much planning, like the walk.

Instead, Social Justice is having a forum entitled “Who Keeps Us Safe?” at Fourth Avenue Presbyterian Church 6753 4th Avenue. (See here)  The description reads: “This day will be devoted to envisioning community safety alternatives that address conflict resolution and mitigate harm through building strong communities and a culture of trust and accountability.”

Whoever organized this isn’t very inspiring. Martin Luther King Jr. Day isn’t about one group in a community – it’s about everyone. This workshop sounds like a requirement for a grant or a way to justify money to an organization (maybe one of the other groups doing the event?)

It’s sad to see the group let the walk go – maybe next year, some of the schools in the area will take over the walk, as it is a visible sign of community.

The Pioneers of the 12:30 Club Would Be Ashamed

This week, two 3rd Avenue BID Steering Committee Members wrote an article for the local paper. The Steering Committee started collecting signatures six months ago and they still don’t have enough. They must realize that hundreds of Ridgites have signed the form for NO BID. People don’t want the owners on the Avenue to get another tax. We want to see them continue to enjoy this community and flourish.

The 12:30 Club Pioneers would be embarrassed to see them still pushing a BID. What’s the 12:30 Club? It’s this group of older business owners who have forgotten what it was like when a new business was just starting out. https://www.guidestar.org/profile/06-1829754

Hey 12:30 Club, while you are doing your thing, stop into Iraqi House. Maybe you didn’t hear that the New York Times has written about this place twice (including NYT’s best bites of 2019).  Meet Mohammad, the owner, eat something he has made and then tell come here and tell me that a BID is needed on 3rd Avenue.

Mohammad brings all the hopes and dreams of a new business owner. More importantly, he brought all of the New York Times readers to Third Avenue, to try the only Iraqi restaurant in New York City!

Strangly, Mohammad’s restaurant has never been featured on the Third Avenue Merchants Facebook or Instagram page (neither has Aleili Restaurant, which people are raving about). Why aren’t you guys sharing the articles about him? People who follow the 3rd Avenue Merchants on social media aren’t looking to see another picture of Brian or Thowback Thursday pictures of a Summer Stroll – they want to see the best this neighborhood has to offer.

If you are trying to dismiss what I am saying because you think I don’t know about BIDs – I do. My family was part of the original Downtown Brooklyn BID. That BID was formed fast because shop owners wanted security officers to make the area safer. The usefulness of that BID stopped there, while it’s costs continued to skyrocket.

In Bay Ridge, both 86th Street and 5th Avenue have a BID – both have more closed stores than 3rd Avenue and they don’t look pretty. The Fifth Avenue BID has spent millions of dollars and there isn’t much to show for it!   Some days 5th Avenue looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in a week. Social media for 5th Avenue BID is just a few retweets on what shops shared. Yet, the staff for the Bay Ridge BID is much larger now!   Store owners should be receiving a lot more for the money they are paying.

Drunk Driver Resisted Arrest in Dyker Heights

Video by Adam Balhetchet of Loudlabs News NYC.

On Thursday, January 16, 2020, at approximately 11:15 pm,  police responded to an accident at the corner of Fort Hamilton Parkway and 72nd Street.

Officers saw a 46-year-old male behind the wheel of a 2019 Chevrolet. The 46-year-old male was operating a 2019 Chevrolet (vehicle # 1), which collided with a 23-year-old female who was operating a 2019 Chevrolet (vehicle # 2) westbound on 70th Street attempting to make a right turn onto Hamilton Parkway. Once vehicle # 1 vehicle collided with vehicle # 2, it forced vehicle # 2 into a parked (vehicle # 3 – not occupied) 2005 Toyota.

EMS transported the 23-year-old female to NYU Langone Hospital in stable condition. Thank God!

Justin Brannan Fooling Home Owners Because He Won’t Hold Johnson Accountable

Justin Brannan Property Taxes

Councilman Brannan is unwilling to hold Democrats responsible. Corey Johnson joined Mayor de Blasio in delaying property tax reform with a fake “property tax commission.”

Brannan doesn’t own property, so he doesn’t care.

Twenty months after the Property Tax Commission was formed, it still has not responded to the public.

Now Brannan is announcing they may come back with the findings, but then there will be more hearings in the Spring. This is not the first time Brannan has said this.

It’s obvious Brannan doesn’t have any clout with people who he has supported, like Mayor de Blasio.

Why does he keep talking about this topic if he isn’t willing to do anything about it?

Papa Johns Opened on 5th Avenue

Papa John’s opened at 8015 – 5th Avenue.

Next door to Papa John’s is the Bay Ridge Diner and across the street is Senator Andrew Gounardes office (which still is labeled as Justin Brannan’s office, even though Brannan moved to 3rd Avenue last May).

This is location was formerly No Quarter Tavern, which closed in August 2018 due to gang violence.  See here

Congratulations to the new owners on their business!!

Papa John’s used to have a large storefront at 9060 Fort Hamilton Pkwy. That storefront was redone, but hasn’t been rented yet –  see the map here.
