Gounardes Fingerpoints After Woman is Sexually Assaulted

The man who sexually assaulted a Bay Ridge woman at the 95th Street station was caught.

It turned out that the man had been in jail for awhile and was released due to the new bail reform law.

Andrew Gounardes and Mathylde Frontus voted for the bail reform bill.  Neither seem to understand that their vote supported a criminal hurting someone in our community.  We feel horrible for the woman whose life is changed because of this.   We are disappointed that Gounardes doesn’t have the integrity to stand up for his community and change the working of the bill.

Gounardes wrote this loaded tweet:

The judge has to go by the law. The bail bill weakened the law and criminals are getting out.

Bay Ridge was  changed by this event. I saw parents discussing giving their children pepper spray so they can fight off creeps on the train (yes it’s legal if it is sold in NY and in a small marked container).

While bail reform was necessary (Kalief Browder’s story is enough reason for bail reform), the NY Senate and Assembly’s went too far.

I’m surprised that Andrew Gounardes voted in favor of the bill as it allows people who commit hate crimes to get out of jail without bail. (THAT IS UNBELIEVEABLE)   Gounardes’ district has two groups of people who have been affected by hate crimes in the past. No Bail for people who commit hate crimes tells young people in these communities that they don’t matter.  (Ask them – they will tell you how they feel about it).

I hate that sexual assault is taken so lightly here, as if women don’t matter!

You know I don’t have any love for Nicole Malliotakis, but Malliotakis was the only politician who spoke appropriately about the sexual assault.  It was especially surprising to see Gounardes did not speak up for the woman, especially since he is married and has a sister.

Jamie DeJesus wrote about the incident and didn’t even mention the sexual assault in the title:

Anyone reading the article’s title would think the crime was about a guy fighting in the subway and robbing people – NOT SEXUAL ASSAULT – ALMOST RAPE. The larceny and possession of stolen good aren’t important, but the woman is important.

Is the sexual assault minimized because the politicians asked for it to be?  Why didn’t Jaime DeJesus check with the judge or even Eric Gonzalez to find out the truth?   Brannan hailed DeJesus’ story because the politicians controlled the article and then no one has to take responsibility for a bill that became law and hurt a woman in our community.

I’ve tried discussing one-sided reporting with DeJesus before and he was unwilling to speak to me about it.

New Church on Fifth Avenue and 80th Street

A new church opened on the corner of 81st Street and 5th Avenue.

The sign reads: “Iglesias de Evangelizacion Misioneras Jovenes Cristianos,” which translates to:  The Church of   Evangelical MissionariesYoung Christians.

This church is also in Coney Island.

This is a Protestant/Christian Church with a Spanish-speaking congregation. Evangelical means they teach the Gospel and spread the Word.

While it may not be your church, mosque or synagogue, a new place of worship is always welcome!  More discussions on the Bible or about God is great.

This church is occupying the storefront formerly held by a Bay Ridge Classic,  Milk Farm corner store.

Congratulations to the Congregation!

Happy Praying in Bay Ridge!

Put Your Gun Away 92nd Street Guy

While we were sleeping early this morning, some residents heard a gun being fired.

Councilman Brannan confirmed it.

Brannan was silent when an AR-15 was shot, but today he spoke up.

92nd Street guy – Keep your gun locked up before you hurt yourself or someone else.

Strangely, the Citizen app had very little about this.

Frontus Has a High Staff Turnover

Mathylde Frontus is in the news for having a high staff turnover. See here

Her 3rd Avenue storefront was closed for a bit.

This week, at the Community Board Meeting, Mathylde’s staffer for the 3rd Avenue office was present. She was upbeat and welcomed residents to come to the  office to get help or partner up on a project.

Hopefully, the new year will bring a fresh start.

Update: Frontus’ staffer was on Facebook on 2/3 trying to make light of the article. Before sharing this yesterday, I checked into it.  The chief-of-staff (who I respect because he is a Bay Ridge resident, father, well-informed and an honest person) left and so did several other employees. They didn’t announce their departure on social media because they are professional.

Man Arrested

The detectives arrested the man above for committing the  sexual assault at the 95th Street Station in Bay Ridge last week.

Police had him since Friday and none of our politicians knew or didn’t bother to share the information.

The 20-year-old above would never have been able to attempt rape if it wasn’t for bail reform.   He has committed other crimes, but bail reform allowed him out.  See the story here and here

NYC has become a city where those who are doing the wrong thing have more rights over citizens.  How do we change this so we can protect people?

Senator Andrew Gounardes said that this man  is being detained and hasn’t been released on bail again.

To the woman who fought like hell to to stop the attack…..I’m sorry NY has failed you. Can you imagine how angry she and her family must be that this was preventable.

Rezoning Affects Neighboring Properties

At the Community Board 10 Meeting this past week, some residents were present to voice their opposition to new development on 3rd Avenue and 99th – 100th Street.

For the past two days, I’ve woken up thinking about theses residents. While the four homes above will be taken down to put up new 8-story buildings, (See here), surrounding neighbors shouldn’t be in the dark for so long.

Changes in the zoning laws happened in 2005. Now when changes happen, the Community Board alerts the block, but back then it may not have happened the same way. The zoning allows for R7 to encourage more development. (See hereThe paper work for demolition has been filed (see here and here), but building plans have not been filed.

Neighbors of this area are concerned about:

a) The residents at 9902 – 3rd Avenue (the large building to the right of these house) are concerned that the new development will be built right up to their building and block their light and view.

Most of their view of Shore Road and the bridge is going to be blocked.  For the residents on the lower floors, their view will be of the construction and then of the new buildings, which is pretty sad.

b) Some residents were concerned about the congestion that these new properties will bring to the area.

Parking is bad in Bay Ridge. While the law requires that new developments have half the amount of parking to the units in the building, more cars will be coming to the area.

Around the block from these buildings is Fontbonne High School.
