Community Board 10 Voted Against the Rezoning at The Staples Lot in Bay Ridge – May 18, 2026

A lot of great Bay Ridge residents attended the Community Board 10 meeting to speak up for Bay Ridge and urge Community Board 10 to vote against the Staples development.
Thank you to those Bay Ridge residents who spoke out against the overdevelopment, flooding on 94th Street and everyone who spoke for Bay Ridge. One resident shared that Brooklyn needs better affordable housing and that we need to reject what isn’t working for NYC.
There were shenanigans going on at this meeting. But there was also several newly appointed CB 10 members including Vinnie Gentile. Gentile reminded everyone that the developer benefitted from the City of Yes already and he should be happy with that!

Bay Ridge OG’s got tired of the nonsense at the meeting. They called for a vote to stop the debate and force the vote (it was so BROOKLYN-like – I lovedddddd it).

Thank you Barbara V. for calling for parliamentary procedure for the vote (I’ve never seen this happen). Watch at 1:32:
The vote first passed. They then proceeded to vote on the motion. Hands were up all over the room – 27 against the rezoning and for a neighborhood plan with a R6A rezoning recommendation (Two CB 10 members were opposed) . Online, I saw that a R6A zoning in NYC is up to 75 feet) – usually 6-8 stories. **This is down from the R7A that the CB 10 committee voted on May 7th. See here: https://shorturl.at/QdI9P

Also tonight:
a) Nine new members were added to Community Board 10 – Vincent Gentile was one of those members. That may have helped tonight.
b) Community Board 10 voted against using 3rd Avenue for a truck route – 7th Avenue will still be used.
c) 800 schools will get 15 MPH speed limits. Fourteen schools in Bay Ridge are included in this plan. CB 10 wants additional schools added (21 schools do not have slow zones). The Mayor said more zones are coming.
d) The dates were given for the Open Streets application for Summer Stroll. Jaynemarie announced July 4th, but I think she meant July 24th, July 31st, August 7th and August 14th.

May 18, 2026Senator Andrew Gounardes Failed to Hold The DEP Accountable – Brad Came Back to Community Board 10 For Help With Flooding

The 10th Avenue sewers have not been repaired in YEARS. We were told that the money has been set aside, but the 10th Avenue residents have not received any updates on this project.
Senator Andrew Gounrdes was supposed to have taken care of this, but he has not followed through. Our neighbor’s basements are still flooding.

Brad came to speak for his neighbors AGAIN. Brad has shown up for several years now! How long are we going to let this go on?
In September 2022, Gounardes had his picture in the paper for this topic. (Gounardes’s Senate re-election was two month later). That’s Brad with Gounardes 3.5 years ago:
See 2022 newspaper article::
We feel terrible that this family (and others like him are not being helped. Politicians can’t remain in office if they aren’t willing to do that work. Gounardes plays on social media, but fails to mention the 10th Avenue sewer project. Vote Andrew Gounardes out in November!

May 16, 2026Chip Cafiero’s Retirement Was Celebrated in Bay Ridge Last Night

Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny shared pictures from Chip Cafiero’s retirement party at The Greenhouse Cafe last night.
Chip Cafiero has worked for 50 Years on Bay Ridge events!
One event which people loved was the Halloween Forest at Owls Head Park (it was amazingggggggg). Justin Brannan and Andrew Gounardes did not continue it when they took office, so a lot of people don’t know how amazing it was because their children didn’t get to experience it.
Chip Cafiero ran and directed the 3rd Avenue Festivals, as well as the Summer Strolls. He will be greatly missed!

May 16, 2026We Love You NYPD – Just Not On Our Hydrants (Not the 68th Precinct’s Truck)

In February 2025, Gregory Fernandez died in a fire in his apartment in Bay Ridge because the hydrant was blocked outside his apartment. His wife and son are without him!

No one should have their vehicle by the hydrant. This photo is from 73rd Street between 5th and 6th Avenue near where the Nabka protest happened today. The 114th Precinct is in Queens.

While this officer didn’t care, thankfully there are a lot more who do.

May 16, 2026Fighting Near Five Below in Sunset Park – The Golden Dumplings Were Released Today!

In April, RMS, the makers of the Dumplings that kids and tweens are going crazy over announced that they would have a Golden Dumpling series.
Today, they released a new set of dumplings. If you get the gold dumpling today, you get a $1000.

A dumpling is the “troll doll” of this year. Last year, the Labubu’s were the collectible items. This year it’s this squishy character with a cute face in a plastic dumpling container:

People lined up in Sunset Park and The Sanitation Hunter recorded the collision and the line outside of Five Below:

May 16, 2026Nabka Protest in Bay Ridge Today 5/16/26

Yesterday was Nabka 78.
Seventy-eight year ago – in 1948, 700,000 Palestinians left their homes (or were forced to leave their homes) during the war that happened when the State of Israel was created.

The word Nabka in Arabic means “catastrophe” or “great disaster.” Each year there are protests in Brooklyn on Nabka.

The “Within Our Lifetime group” can march and chant in the streets of NYC, but ultimately the only way to get Palestine back (or a part of the area back) is for them to fight Israel and win. Israel has a strong defense because they spend $25 billion on it each year.
Today at 2:00 pm, people will be protesting in Bay Ridge starting on 72nd Street and 5th Avenue.

Their flyer translates to: “Neighborhoods remember, but the Nakba does not die.”
One organization wrote: “In honor of the 78+ year long struggle for liberation of the Palestinian people, Pal-Awda will be in the streets of Bay Ridge protesting in honor of the freedom fighters and martyrs of Gaza and all of Palestine.“
A video of the protest was shared here:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1821884731398700/posts/4294563837464098
There is always a group of Jewish men who show up to support the Palestinians and chant, “Free Palestine.”
There were counter protesters. Some got ugly:
The Nakba protest in bay ridge begins! Pro Israel supporters shout at pro Palestine Jews, a brief argument occurred.
— Luis documents? (@luisdocuments) May 16, 2026
Hundreds of protesters are now gathering on a small sidewalk, cops have now formed a wall to prevent protesters from entering the streets. pic.twitter.com/9OeHsXkleJ
Hopefully, it will be a peaceful protest. In 2024, it was not peaceful and 40 people were arrested – see here: https://www.instagram.com/p/C7IL5mnORZT
Expect: Traffic, bus delays and a large police presence in Bay Ridge. Also, there will Jewish people standing with the Palestinians:
