RIP Jiayi Zheng – Nurse Killed in Well-Known Dangerous Area of Sunset Park
On Saturday morning, Jiayi Zheng, a nurse at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn left work after finishing an overnight shift at the hospital.
Jiayi was walking home at 7:40 am in her scrubs on 55th Street and 3rd Avenue in Sunset Park.
A speeding black Cadillac sedan drove past the red light, hit Jiayi and did not stop. The vehicle had PA plates. The driver still has not been identified.
Jiayi Zheng was rushed back to the hospital, but sadly she could not be saved by her collogues. How heartbreaking!
RIP Jiayi. She was only 28-years old and she dedicated her life to caring for others. Prayers for her family and friends.
This area of 3rd Avenue is WELL KNOWN for being dangerous. In 2023, it was listed as a top problem in NYC. It was number 5 on this list : https://www.chopranocerino.com/new-york-city-hotspots-for-traffic-collisions
Senator Andrew Gounardes failed to take action for Sunset Park and another person died. On the television news, Gounardes claimed that the DOT “ghosted him and didn’t come back with a plan.” Gounardes never pressed the issue on social media or took action.
In July 2025, two men were killed nearby on 52nd Street and 3rd Avenue. While Senator Steve Chan doesn’t represent this area (Gounardes does), Steve went to the area to offer his help.

Gounardes thinks writing about an accident on social media is enough, but that is not leadership. He should have taken action for Sunset Park.
