Their pitch to homeowners was basically: “Let me see your existing electric bill. If you install solar panels your electric bill will drop to _____.” They also said that government incentives will help pay for it.
Instead home owners were signed up for loans for $30,000 – $40,000. Some people didn’t realize they had taken out a loan until they got a letter from the lender. (Source: https://shorturl.at/nDq1d )
About 370 New York City homeowners were affected by these loans.
Some people who had the panels installed reported that:
- The panels were installed facing the wrong direction, so they didn’t produce enough power.
- They had roof damage/ leaks or a collapsed ceilings after installation
New York City filed a lawsuit against the company and its owner. The city is asking for: $18 million to repay homeowners.
