Some Justice for Ephrain Barreto – Sunset Park

On June 3, 2024, Efrain Barreto was struck by Abed Abed on a moped , as he crossed 60th Street near 5th Avenue in Sunset Park.

Yesterday, Senator Steve Chan announced that there was a conviction in the case. “In Loving Memory” of Efrain Barreto shirts were worn by family and friends, who have been waiting for justice.

Senator Chan wrote that Abed Abed was found guilty on all ten charges. Abed was remanded to jail on a $20,000 cash bail pending sentencing on Monday, September 8th. See charges:

Senator Chan has asked for the community to show up for Abed Abed’s sentencing on September 8th at 9:00 at at Kings Criminal Court at 120 Schermerhorn Street in Brooklyn.

Barreto’s daughter, Vivian has been seeking justice for her father and in turn safer streets for Brooklyn.

Abed was charged with aggravated operation of a motor vehicle without a license in the third degree. He killed Efrain Barreto, so he should have been charged with a felony, but the current law does not support that. Barreto’s daughter wants that changed, so reckless drivers are held accountable for killing people.

RIP Ephrain Barreto. Thank you to his family and community for holding someone accountable in a time when it feels like crime goes nnoticed. Prayers for your continued healing and peace.

Senator Steve Chan has been taking street safety seriously. He realizes that he can’t just concentrate on just his district because this problem exists throughout Brooklyn.

Senator Chan has been speaking out about deaths in other areas of Brooklyn.

Chan immediately went to Sunset Park after two men were killed while crossing the street. While this is Senator Andrew Gounardes’ district, Gounardes waited almost two weeks to hold a presser and speak about what happened.

For Gounardes, it seems like creating videos is more for his social media, rather than taking action for Brooklyn. The mayor isn’t going to take this issue seriously if the politicians are waiting two weeks to speak up about it. Senator Gounardes ended this week with:
