Max Rose’s Mother Wrote Me A Letter

Tonight, when I walked outside to water my the plants that baked in the sun all day, I saw an envelope on the mat outside my door. I brought the mail in earlier hours before. I wondered if I dropped the envelope.
When I picked it up, I saw the envelope was blank and there was no stamp. It wasn’t sealed. I took out the paper inside and realized this was a play out of Michael Grimm’s playbook. It was a letter from Max Rose’s Mother, Lisa Rose.
Politicians in this neighborhood like to have their loved ones send us letters. (Here’s Grimm’s and Andrew Gounardes’ wife’s)
Below is the letter and the response:

Dear Mrs. Rose,
Thank you for being a military mother. I can’t imagine the hours of worry and fear you had after your son was seriously hurt. Thank you to Max for his service in the military. And finally, thank you for not asking us to vote for your son.
When Max first ran for office, people chose him because he promised he was going to work for us. We were represented by Dan Donovan and everyone was tired of Dan.
When Max was elected, he enjoyed walking in the parades in Bay Ridge, but Max didn’t take on any of the hard issues here. As lobbyists and developers played in our area with other politicians, Max didn’t say anything about it.
When the pandemic happened, businesses needed support. The first business to close in our community was the Iraqi House. Six months prior, The New York Times raved about Mohammed’s restaurant. (See here) During the pandemic, the government has programs to help business owners. No one helped Mohammed. He was a new immigrant who wasn’t able to access the programs to save his business. Social media doesn’t reach everyone in our community. Max was raising his new baby, but didn’t send anyone to help Mohammed or any of the other businesses with Covid-relief funds.
During Covid. Brannan and Gounardes held a meeting for business owners virtually. I asked Lee to go because I was working. Instead of having an open Zoom meeting, where people could talk to one another, the politicians brought in some speakers and then they closed the meeting the minute it was supposed to end. The business owners were not allowed to ask questions.
While Max wants to speak out against guns today. Max ignored guns in Brooklyn and didn’t take a stand. (See Here) and (Here)

Max watched as Justin Brannan posted this online. Max engages Brannan on social media a lot and he didn’t say anything to let Brannan know it wasn’t appropriate. Imagine how the 68th Precinct police felt when they saw Brannan go unchecked by the other politicians.
Andrew Gounardes voted for changes to bail law. It took Max two years to speak out against it. (See here) Nicole Malliotakis stood up against the changes in the bail law from the start. She continued to shine a light on it. Now Mayor Adams has asked for help.
When Bergen Place had a puppy mill, Andrew and Justin failed to help the residents and the dogs. Max Rose should have stepped up. Maybe Max wasn’t called about the problem on Bergen Place, but it was in the news a lot, so he should have contacted those residents. (See here) The puppy mill moved to another part of Brooklyn, where people responded a lot better. The ASPCA took the dogs away. (See here)
Last October, Max came to Bay Ridge to take photos with Justin Brannan. He knew Brannan pushed bills for lobbyists and had let developers win here.

As this year began, Andrew Gounardes voted to gerrymander Brooklyn. Gounardes spoken out against gerrymandering for years, but he voted for a strange Congressional map that went into Park Slope so Max could have a good chance at winning.
I didn’t think Max needed to help to win an election. I was surprised he didn’t call out Gounardes about the gerrymandering because it’s ethically wrong. Instead, Max quietly opened a campaign office in Park Slope on 7th Avenue and 9th Street. (See) These guys thought they beat the system.

The courts and special master changed the maps to appease the Republicans. *The reality is if the district wasn’t changed, Max might have been able to win. Our community won’t have another opportunity to get a fair district for ten more years. Andrew Gounardes should not be running for office, as he wasn’t able to uphold the Constitution. (See here)
In April, Max Rose accepted the endorsement of Brad Lander. Max is running to represent two boroughs of NYC that are being overtaxed, AND Brad Lander pays very low property taxes. I have spoken about this with Brad Lander since 2019. (See here)

Lander has served in government for many years and refused to do anything to make an equitable tax system.

Brittany Ramos DeBarros is running against Max. Brittany said Max has refused to debate her. Why are scared politicians able to avoid the Democratic process of debating their opponent? Someone probably needs to make a law that two public debates are required for public office.

Mrs. Rose, Your grandson is beautiful. He deserves the best of everything in the world. I hope Max finds a career far away from politics and enjoys his life.
And I hope our community elects new leaders to replace those who played politics, played with lobbyists or were silent because they were too cowardly to speak out against their friends doing the wrong thing.
.
Hugs,
marlene
