Another Ferry for Staten Island

Mayor de Blasio was on Errol Louis’ show talking about the new Staten Island ferry.

This ferry is operated by a subcontractor through the EDC. (Photos here)

It takes 18 minutes to get to Battery Park and 35 minutes to get from Staten Island to 39th Street in Manhattan. (More info)

It cost $2.75 (it’s not the free ferry that the Department of Transportation has already). It’s at another pier a few blocks away.

While these ferry rides are $2.75 a person, they cost NYC around $10 each. (Source) How come no one is asking that? No one is wondering why Staten Island got another ferry? Someone is making some serious CHA-Ching.

Whenever the EDC is involved, it’s always bad news.

All of these mini-ferries are heavily subsidized:
“In 2019, the watchdog group Citizens Budget Commission calculated that when a passenger spends $2.75 for a ticket, the government spends $9.34 to subsidize the trip.” Meanwhile people in Bay Ridge, which has a subway and express bus service, think they should get a shuttle bus to the 69th street pier!… https://www.thecity.nyc/transportation/2021/2/4/22267583/nyc-ferry-de-blasio-financial-boost

Subsidized – that was the word that I couldn’t think of! Thank you. I found the stats for 2020 and added it above. They say it’s about $10 a ticket.
