If You Have a Dog in Bay Ridge on The 4th of July

Brooklynites love their fireworks on the 4th of July – some love them in the months before and after the 4th as well.
But the 4th of July is pure torture for most dogs. Some dog owners have their vets give them a prescription for the dog – we don’t.
**My Natural Pet at 8318 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge sells natural treats for pets that may help them with the fireworks. 718-333-5678.
Here’s what we do every year:
1) Take your dog out for long walks throughout the day. If you normally do two walks – do 4 or 5 walks.
2) Play with your dog a lot in the afternoon on July 4th. We have family over, so they love playing ball with the dogs.
3) Slice up thin slices of meat and vegetables for them – it’s the 4th of July – they like to celebrate too.
4) Around 9:30 pm, turn on your music – a lot louder than usual.
5) Standby with snacks, a new toy or bones (whatever your dog likes)
This always gets us through the 4th of July evening.
Sometimes fireworks happen after that. If that happens, open your window and yell out, “C’monnnnnnnn….My dog can’t take these fireworks any more.” Good neighbors will stop because they like dogs.
Do not go out and speak to those who are lighting fireworks. Remember a Brooklyn mother did that last July because Eric Adams suggested it and she was shot. (See here) Many people have been drinking (or doing other things) all day.
