A Bay Ridge resident named Bernice worked hard as a nurse and raised her family in Bay Ridge. During Covid-19, the government told tenants they didn’t need to pay their rent. Meanwhile, Bernice has been depleting her savings and retirement money. See here
Bernice wrote to the Daily News…but I think there are probably a lot of seniors in this area who are in this situation and no one is helping them.
Why isn’t the local government helping seniors? NYS gave rent relief, but didn’t do anything for property owners who are being taken advantage of now. At the beginning of COVID-19, it was understandable. While the moratorium has been extended, it is leaving people out of rental income for years. They have to pay their bills and NYS Senators have not offered any assistance!
It’s over a year later and leaders like Senator Andrew Gounardes still have not taken care of this. He will issue press releases about nonsense instead of helping. Gounardes is aware this situation exists, but it doesn’t affect him, so there is no movement on it.
There must be a lot in this position and they are stressing out over it.
