Will You Speak Up for Sunset Park? For Brooklyn?

Sunset Park finally got their Councilman (Carlos Menchaca) to hear them.

Industry City wants to rezone.  Industry City claims they will offer “quality jobs”, but plans were made years ago for Sunset Park! The waterfront space to be repurposed as a regional production hub for renewable energy.  (See here) Sunset Park residents want the city to stay  with this plan!  Why?   Because the people in Sunset Park would be able to apply for these jobs and get paid decent wages.  The people in Sunset Park are fighting to get the right type of jobs in this area.

While out-of-district councilmen fight for the developers, local Councilman Carlos Menchaca has questioned who will benefit from low paying jobs through rezoning?  Politicians outside of our borough have spoken out claiming “jobs is the way to go.”  But they aren’t saying what type of jobs and who will receive them.

The middle class is fighting to improve their area and get quality jobs here.

The meeting will be held online on Tuesday, September 15th. Register here to speak

Even if you think you don’t have something important to say, please sign up and speak out. Don’t worry about fancy words – just go Brooklyn on them and tell them to stop siding with developers!

Councilman Carlos Menchaca heard the people this time and even he said NO because he knows this will not help the people. Menchaca has allowed hotels in the area (the people fought that and lost).

Menchaca noted that affordable housing was not part of the plan. He knows people are being priced out of the area already.

If you are someone who is free on September 15th and you can tell them not to let the developers control this area, please speak up for Brooklyn.  I know some of you can “Go All Brooklyn on them,”  so please do.  Register here.

City Council thinks no one cares about Sunset Park – that’s why the timing of this meeting is at 10:00 am on a Tuesday. They are hoping this is a done deal. MAKE SOME NOISE BROOKLYN!

marlene
