Too Many Empty Stores on One Block

This is 78th Street and 3rd Avenue. Five storefronts are empty.

The corner store 7801 – 3rd Avenue was the shoemaker/dry cleaner.

Next to it was My Thai, which quickly transferred to another Thai Restaurant called Come On Thai. A friend went and loved it more than My Thai – she said she had great food and great service.

7807 3rd Avenue – Sunset Beauty went out of business.

7809 – 3rd Avenue Samia’s Restaurant has been closed for years.

7811 – 3rd Avenue was New York City Tae Kwon Do

7815 3rd Avenue – Things on Third has a for Rent sign in the window

Hugs,
marlene

Things on Third used to be on the other side of the avenue under a different name. They went out of business and shortly later popped up in this location. Always wondered what the story was there.

Bay Ridge may not be able to support two shopping streets in the future. There was a tremendous loss of population from the building of the bridge and now the remaining population is aged — 20% senior citizens I believe is the figure. The area has been attracting people priced out of Park Slope but who knows if that will continue with work from home looking more and more likely to continue. Plus, of course, e-commerce. Some of these storefronts may end up getting converted to apartments (7th Ave in Sunset has a lot of those, done many years ago.) This is not really attractive in terms of street life.

If they open stores that everyone needs – people will be there. Salad shops, places to bring kids and variety stores (even though people don’t like them)do well here. We are oversaturated with nail salons and hookah shops.

I don’t understand anyone wanting to run a physical store any longer. Least of all in Bay Ridge where you are burdened by:

    1. Oppressive regulations from the City in the form of fines, inspections, regulations and taxes.

    2. Quasi governmental shylocks like the BID that tax you like mafia Dons only to put up some holiday lights.

    3. Changing demographics with newcomers that don’t shop and spend like old time residents.

    4. Landlords that charge on the basis of what the neighborhood use to look like.
